2017 ANNUAL REPORT
Neighbors Helping Neighbors
2804 Benzie Hwy, Benzonia, MI 49616 I benziebacn.org
2017 Winner of the Benzie County Chamber of Commerce Non-Profit Community Impact Award
— 3 —
Dear Friends,
2017 was a busy year for BACN—food pantry and clothing visits were up exponentially. There were facility challenges and needed repairs. New partnerships were formed that helped address food insecurity for local senior citizens and school children. Ongoing partnerships supported five more students receiving high school diplomas, and two women preparing to graduate from college.
Early in the year, Rotary Charities of Traverse City awarded BACN a technology grant in part for the creation of the video “Neighbors, a BACN Project”, for which producers PB&J Marketing of Traverse City won two national Addy awards. We’re so grateful to have this video (available to view on the front page of our website) to better explain the heart of BACN’s work.
What are some examples of Neighbors Helping Neighbors? Here are a few from 2017:• The continual donation of healthy foods by so many
businesses, civic groups, student organizations and individuals
• The many local businesses who offer their services with a concerned, “How can we help?”
• Our local churches who so generously provide not only financial donations but the volunteers who are BACN’s lifeblood
• Our area’s many fine partner agencies willing to work together to create needed services
• The members of the BACN Board of Directors, who have undertaken the heavy time investment of an evaluative process determining BACN’s future direction
Each person or entity I’ve mentioned, and the donors listed within, are Neighbors who helped our Neighbors. The Neighbors, Board, Staff and I cannot adequately express our gratitude!
Thank you!

2017 SERVICEFrom a total 2,975 unique individuals, BACN delivered the following number of service visits:
6,478for Food
6,134 for Clothing
313 for Utilities
174 for Transportation
62 for GED
79 for Housing
35 for Medical
99 for Other

2017 EXPENSES2017 REVENUE
In-Kind: 64% Individuals: 15% Foundations: 13% Businesses: 3% Organizations: 2% Churches: 2% Events: 1%
Programs & Services 90% Management 5% Fundraising: 5%
Total 2017 Community Impact: $1,454,366*
BACN’s work is driven largely by generous people who donate food, clothing, household items, and volunteer hours. Here is the 2017 impact of these gifts:
• The value of donated food was $331,000
• The value of donated clothing and household items was $487,000
• The work of BACN’s volunteers saved $237,000 in labor cost
We thank the youth of our community for the school, scout club and church youth group-sponsored food and financial drives. In 2017, BACN was the beneficiary of everything from football camp to creative parade floats to a gingerbread house contest. And…there really is nothing as fun as roomful of chatty, dancing kids sorting and stocking food!

The Gift of VolunteersIn 2017, BACN had a volunteer roster of 169 people. What is the significance of this? Simply put, volunteers keep BACN going. They stock and run the food pantry. They accept and sort through the donations that arrive daily. They organize and help Neighbors in the clothing center, work the registration window and front office, and meet with Neighbors one-to-one as coordinators. Over 90% of interaction Neighbors have at BACN is with volunteers.
We’re not listing the names of those who volunteered in 2017, as many do not want the recognition. But we do want to express our deep appreciation of these selfless, giving people. When BACN was founded by area churches, the intent was that the services given would be a reflection of the love of Christ. We feel nothing embodies this reflection more than the work of our volunteers.
“ Volunteers do not necessarily have the time; they just have the heart.”
Elizabeth Andrew

The Value of Non-Cash GiftsEach year BACN is the recipient of generosity beyond what comes in through food drives, the donation doors, or as direct financial gifts. Each gift of this nature helps BACN be stronger and serve to the best of their ability.
We’d like to take this opportunity to express our appreciation to those who provided these types of gifts. Following is a list of individuals, groups and businesses who provided services, brought special food deliveries, repaired our facility, facilitated special projects, and quietly covered other needs with no thought of being thanked. We’re so grateful for those who quietly help make us a community of Neighbors Helping Neighbors!

Every attempt has been made to ensure this is a complete and accurate list. If you find your information is incorrect, missing, or your name misspelled, please let us know so we can correct our records. If an error has occurred, a cup of coffee and piece of pie will be on BACN, delivered with our sincere apologies!
In 2017, we introduced the concept that all who donate to BACN are a “slice of BACN’s pie”.
During the 2017 Summer Match, we set a goal of raising an entire $100,000, with the John L. Mulvaney Foundation providing the first half of that pie. “Slices” were added to the pie banner out front as donations came in, and we were thrilled to make the goal of our complete pie. Many thanks to all who were a slice of BACN’s pie in 2017!
Volunteer Mark Copher working on the pie banner
