Tosurviveandthriveintoday’sfluidenvironment,culturalorganizationsmustdevelopthefinancesthatsupporttheircontinuousstabilityandadaptation.Yetflawedplanning,communicationsandfundingnormsoftenunderminelong-termfinancialhealth.Inthisworkshop,wehelpartsleadersunderstandtheelementsoffinancialsustainabilityandhowtostartplanningfortheirorganizations’long-termhealth.Definingcapitalizationas“theresourcesanorganizationneedstofulfillitsmissionovertime,”GrantmakersintheArts(GIA)beganofferingConversationsonCapitalizationandCommunityin2010aspartofitsnationalefforttoaddresstheunder-capitalizedtendencyofthenonprofitartsfield.GIAhasledtheseworkshopsforfundersandnonprofitsinmorethan15communities.Thesessionwillofferknowledgeandperspectiveonwhatittakestobuildviableandresilientbusinessmodelsandbalancesheets,intheserviceofartisticvitality.Itisdesignedfororganizationsthatwanttostrengthentheirfinancialplanninganddecision-makingskills,andlearntobettercommunicatewithsupportersaboutfinancialprioritiesandneeds.Recommendedforexecutivedirectors,seniorfinanceprofessionalsandboardmembers.

PreviouslyMeredithworkedattheChildren’sArtCentreinBoston,MA,America’sfirstandoldestpublicfineartsmuseumdesignedexclusivelyforchildren.There,shedesignedartslessonsalongwithguidedtripsandmuseumexperiencesforthestudentsoftheBoston’shistoricUnitedSouthEndSettlements.MeredithholdsaBachelor’sdegreeinChildandFamilyDevelopmentwithanemphasisinArtEducationfromtheUniversityofTennessee.Sheisalsoa2016graduateoftheHolmbergInstitute,aprogramdesignedbyArtsBuildinChattanoogatodevelopemergingartsleadersasartsadvocates.

BradleyHanson,Ph.D.,DirectorofFolklifeDr.BradleyHansonjoinedtheTennesseeArtsCommissioninJanuary2015.Anethnomusicologistandfolklorist,hepreviouslyworkedasaculturalinterpreterfortheTennesseeStateParksandtheFriendsoftheCumberlandTrail.AspartoftheCumberlandTrailMusicandHeritageproject,hiseffortsincludedfieldresearch,archivalmanagement,interpretivewriting,andrecordandradioproductioncenteredonregionalcultureandfolklife.

KimJohnson,DirectorofArtsAccessKimJohnsonjoinedtheTennesseeArtsCommissioninSeptember2015.Herpositionincludesensuringaccesstotheartsforunderservedcommunities,TitleVIcoordinationandcompliance,andincreasedartsopportunitiesforpersonswithdisabilities.

JaredMorrison,DirectorofPerformingArtsJaredMorrisonbeganhistenureasPerformingArtsDirectorattheTennesseeArtsCommissioninJanuary2014.Forthepast15years,hehasheldmarketing,developmentandartisticadministrationpositionsatmanyrespectedartsinstitutions,includingtheNashvilleandChicagosymphonyorchestras,SpiveyHall,SarasotaOperaandLyricOperaofChicago.

DianeWilliams,DirectorofGrantsManagementDianeWilliamshasbeenwiththeTennesseeArtsCommissionsince2003.Inherrole,sheoverseesgrantcontractsfromstarttofinishandworkswithgranteestoensurethatproperfilingandbudgetaryprotocolsarebeingfollowed.Shealsoconductspre-auditsofgrantpaymentrequestsandmaintainsadetailedrecordofallsubmittedandapprovedgrants.
