• Adding herbs and spices to food upgrade the taste of it.
• But they are more than it
Health benefits
• Antioxidant• Vitamin and minerals• Unique medicinal properties
• According to the National Center for Complementary Medicine Reports, nonvitamin, nonmineral products are the most popular complementary therapies in the US.
• Nearly, one out of five of the US population uses natural products.
• This population spend almost $15 billion on food supplements such as herbs.
• Did you encounter an overweight/obese person who wants to know which food can help weight loss?

issues for patients and practitioners.
• Herbs are not the cure-all, but they can increase the effectiveness of the weight loss diets.

cumin
• Cuminum cyminum• Used in Iranian cuisine• Used as anti colic in Iranian traditional
medicine• There are some claims regarding its weight
loss effects• Some over the counter products of cumin
have been produced
• We need evidence
methodology
• RCT• Overweight/obese 20-60 yrs women(BMI>25
Kg/m2 )• Without serious disease or drug use• Without diabetes• No previous treatment regimens in the past
three months, • and lack of weight change by more than 2 kg in
the last month
• Computer randomization• Weight loss diet including yogurt (control
group)• Weight loss diet plus yogurt and
cumin( intervention group)• Single blind
• Energy deficit of 500 kcal.• Cumin dosage: 3 g( two divided dose) with
lunch and dinner plus 150 g low fat yogurt• Study duration: 3 months
• Dietary counselling• Food record for 3 days before and at the end
of the study• Counting the cumin packages• Reminding participants using phone calls
Data gathering
• FBS• Lipid profile• Anthropometry and Body composition

• Adding cumin to weight loss diet can improve body composition and lipid profile
Proposed mechanisms
• increase satiety• Decrease flatulence• Increase thermogenesis • Modulate lipid metabolism• Water elimination(causing sweat)
• Glycoside saponins prevent Chol absorptionand increase its fecal excretion by interfering with its enterohepatic circulation.
• Cumin seeds have some phytosterols such as beta sitosterol, delta 5 and delta 7 avenasterols, stigmasterol, campesterol, and lanosterol
• It may also have a role in upregulation of the LDL-C receptor and inhibition of 3-hydroxyl-3-methylglutaryl coenzyme A reductase.
conclusion
• In overweight/ obese women adding cumin to diet increase the beneficial effects of weight loss diet during 3 months.
• In men????• Longer period of time????• Other benefit????• Toxicity????
