LESO Hotel appare come un progetto inspie-gabile. La sorpresa che colpisce nellosservarele fotografie senza conoscere le motivazionidellintervento grande. Un paesaggio che sistenta ad immaginare terrestre, un insedia-mento che appare solo grazie ai movimentidel terreno, la terra coperta di ghiaia e sassischeggiati di un colore rosso ferroso comesi abituati a pensare il suolo marziano. Unluogo del quale non si percepiscono i limiti edil cielo, limpidissimo, che fa da fondale a tuttala scena.La costruzione che sorge nel deserto di Ata-cama, sul Cerro Paranal in Cile, non unhotel turistico. La ESO (European Associationfor Astronomical Research in the SouthernHemisphere) necessitava di un centro cheospitasse i ricercatori ed i tecnici impegnati alVery Large Telescope, a causa delle estremecondizioni climatiche. Le difficolt relativeallambiente ostile forniscono la risposta alle

scelte progettuali: assenza di acqua e vegeta-zione, radiazioni solari estreme, venti forti enon controllabili, sensibile abbassamento dellatemperatura durante le ore notturne, umiditrelativa estremamente bassa e possibilit diterremoti. Ogni aspetto di questo luogo ostileha suggerito ad Auer e Weber soluzioni sia ditipo funzionale che formale. Protezione e con-templazione sostengono lintero intervento.La soluzione ipogea deriva dalla necessit diovviare alle radiazioni solari e ai venti, maanche per consentire di rimanere al di sottodella linea dellorizzonte e concedere la vistaallinfinito fino allOceano. The ESO Hotel seems to be an inexplicableproject. If you were to look at photographsof it without knowing the projects motiva-tions, your surprise would be considerable.A landscape that can scarcely be imagined asearthly, a site that appears only because of the

movements of the land, the earth covered bygravel and stone slivers an iron red color likeyou would expect to find only on Mars. A placewhere you cant see the boundaries and wherethere is a perfectly clear sky that forms a back-drop to the whole scene.The building that stands in the desert of Ata-cama, on the Cerro Paranal in Chile, is not atourism hotel. The ESO (European Associationfor Astronomical Research in the SouthernHemisphere) needed a center to accommodateresearchers and specialists working on theVery Large Telescope, because of the extremeclimatic conditions. The problems brought bythe hostile environment provide the explana-tion of the design choices; the lack of waterand vegetation, extreme sun radiation, strong,uncontrollable winds, considerable nocturnaldrops in temperature, extremely low relativehumidity and the chance of earthquakes. Eve-ry aspect of this hostile place suggested bothfunctional and formal solutions to Auer andWeber. Protection and contemplation supportthe entire project.

Le camere godono della vista sul-linfinito e la luce vi penetra orizzontalmente,mentre gli spazi comuni sono chiusi ai latie la luce vi entra dallalto. Lorganizzazioneinterna delledificio essenziale e, proprioper il carattere collettivo dellinsediamento,favorisce lincontro tra le persone allinternodi spazi dominati dalla presenza di vegetazioneche aiuta anche a ristabilire valori idrometriciaccettabili. In particolar modo, lo spazio circo-lare, che rappresenta il cardine dellimpiantoplanimetrico tra le camere e le zone funzionalicollettive, caratterizzato da una cupola geo-detica (chiaro riferimento al telescopio e allavolta celeste) e da un vero e proprio giardinotropicale attrezzato con sdraio e di vani. Nessungiardino mai stato pi a rtificiale. lomologodi un giardino dinverno in un centro urbano,un luogo onirico, uno spazio interno che sicontrappone allesterno. Esterno che, in questo

caso, non la citt ma la natura. E quando lanatura, come la citt, assume una forma estre-ma, luomo deve proteggersi.La composizione ha molti riferimenti simbolicied unattitudine alla riduzione del vocabolarioche sembra derivare direttamente dal conte-sto. Gli spigoli si percepiscono appena, quantobasta per identificare il volume che si innestanella terra. Il prospetto principale, quello cor-rispondente alla stecca delle camere, proponeun disegno seriale determinato da unalternan-za di pieni e di vuoti, in un gioco che favoriscesenzaltro i primi. come se quellarchitetturaci fosse sempre stata, come se nascesse da una

perception of the interior spaces as well. Therooms provide a view of the infinite and thelight penetrates them horizontally while thecommon spaces are closed on the sides andlight comes only from above. The buildingsinterior organization is simple. The group na-

ture of the site favors people gathering insidethe spaces dominated by vegetation that helpsto reestablish acceptable hydrometric values.Specifically, the circular space, which serves asthe pivot point of the floor plan layout betweenthe rooms and the functional common spaces,is a geodesic dome (a clear reference to thetelescope and the celestial vault) and containsa full tropical garden equipped with loungechairs and sofas. There has never been a moreartificial garden. It is akin to a winter gardenin an urban center, a dream-like, interiorspace that contrasts with the outside. In thiscase, outside is not the city; it is nature. Whennature, like a city, takes on an extreme form,humans most protect themselves.The composition has many symbolic refer-ences and a tendency to reduce the lexicon,apparently derived directly from the context.Edges are barely visible, just enough to iden-tify the volume that is inserted into the ground.The main elevation that corresponds to thelevel of the rooms, features a serial designdefined by alternating full and empty spaces,

in a play that clearly favors the full spaces. Itis as if this architecture were always here, asif it came out of a close collaboration betweenhuman beings and nature. You can hardly helpseeing a piece of Arnaldo Pomodoro in the

collaborazione strettissima tra uomo e natura. difficile non vedere nellaffioramento dei vo-lumi un frammento di Arnaldo Pomodoro.Le scelte costruttive sono a loro volta con-seguenza del pericolo sismico, di esigenzeeconomiche e della volont dei progettisti difar aderire larchitettura al luogo. La struttura modulare e costituita da piccoli elementiconnessi in modo molto flessibile. Il cementogettato in opera contiene inerti raccolti sulluogo con laggiunta di ossido di ferro comepigmento, affinch il colore della costruzionesi armonizzi con il paesaggio. I muri di con-tenimento sono prefabbricati in cemento e lecoperture degli spazi collettivi, illuminati inmodo zenitale, presentano una struttura me-tallica e lastre di policarbonato traslucido.La possibilit di un futuro smantellamentodella base scientifica stata prevista attraversovarie forme di riciclo. La flessibilit dellim-pianto consentirebbe un cambiamento duso

emergence of the volumes. The constructionchoices are varyingly the result of the earth-quake danger, economic constraints and thedesire of the architects to adhere to the placesarchitecture. The structure is modular andconsists of small elements that are flexiblyconnected to one another. The cement cast onsite contains inert materials collected locallywith iron oxide added as a pigment, so that thecolor of the building blends with the landscape.The containment walls are prefabricated in ce-ment. The roofs of the common spaces, lit fromabove, have a structure of metal and translu-cent polycarbonate slabs.The possibility of a future dismantling of thescience base was addressed through variousforms of recycling. The flexibility of the lay-out would make it possible to change its usewhether for scientific or tourism purposes or ifit were to be totally or partial dismantled. If it

is abandoned instead, the building is made sothat its deterioration by natural causes wouldnot contaminate the landscape or the environ-ment. It is as if it were born from the earth andwere destined to return to it.
