EAR CARE OF STUDENTS: ROLE OF TEACHERS
• If the child is distracted or inattentive in class, The teacher seems
to be talking.... it may because he is not able to hear properly Why can't I hear!!
• If any child has discharge or pain in the ear or is not able to hear properly, refer the child for an ear check up

DISCHARGE FROM THE EAR IS A SERIOUS MATTER
• Don't waste time and consult a doctor immediately, take only prescribed medicines
• Clean the discharge with soft, clean clothes or cotton
• Avoid entry of water into the ears and do not instil anything in your ears

DOES YOUR CHILD HEAR WELL?
Suspect hearing impairment if the child does not do the following activities by the age mentiones
3 Months
• Respond to very loud sounds
• Blink in response to a bang
• Wake up when there is a sudden noise near her/him
6 Months
• Turn towards the sound of mother's voice • Show any interest in any new sounds
• Try to localize the sound source by moving her/his head or eyes
9 Months
• Understands small words like 'come', 'by'.... spoken by the mother • Show interest in squeaky toys • Make any babbling
sound
15 Months
• Respond to her/his own name • Start speaking small words like 'Mama', Baba','Dada'
• Try to imitate word which she/he hears
2 Years
• Respond to simple instructions like 'Touch your nose', 'Show your tummy'
• Speak small sentences

•Out of every 1000 children born, there may be 2 or 3 such children who can't hear properly. •Early identification by screening will help in healthy speech and language development.
Hearing of a child can be tested through a simple Otoacoustic Emission (OAE) machine.
If repeat test is required, tell parents to bring the child again for retest.
In case no further test is advised, tell parents to keep a watch on
baby's development.
