Avenir is a geometric sans-seriftypeface designed
by Adrian Frutiger in 1988and released by Linotype GmbH,
now a subsidiary ofMonotype Corporation.
The word avenir is French for "future".The font takes inspiration from the
early geometric sans-seriftypefaces Erbar (1922), designed by
Jakob Erbar, and Futura (1927),designed by Paul Renner.
Frutiger intended Avenir to bea more organic, humanist
interpretation of these highlygeometric types. While similarities
can be seen with Futura, the two-story lowercase a is more like Erbar,
and also recalls Frutiger’s earliernamesake typeface, Frutiger.
.
Avenir was originally releasedin 1988 with three weights, each with a roman andoblique version.
Between 2004–2007, Frutiger, together with Linotype's in-house type designerAkira Kobayashi, reworkedthe Avenir family to addresson-screen display issues. The result was titled Avenir Next.
The initial release of thetypeface family was increasedto 24 fonts.

Avenir was originally released in 1988 with three weights, each with aroman and oblique version, all using Frutiger’s two-digit weight andwidth convention for names. The typeface family was later expanded tosix weights, each with a roman and oblique version. Together with AkiraKobayashi, Frutiger completely reworked the Avenir family in 2004.The result is Avenir Next.
The original Avenir family is made up of designs with gradual weightchanges in order to satisfy the needs of specific text applications. Whilethe book and light weights have similar stroke widths, the book weightis well suited for body text, whereas the light was designed for captionsand subhead text.
Dwell magazine switched to Avenir during a 2007 rebrand.
Key Bank adopted Avenir for advertising and in-bank signage. JapanAirlines, Banrisul, Scottish Water, Susquehanna International Groupand Red Lion Hotels use Avenir for corporate branding.
Avenir is employed on signage at Dallas Fort Worth and Hong Konginternational airports. The city of Amsterdam adopted Avenir as itscorporate typeface in 2003. The Girl Scouts of America created amodified version of Avenir for its 2010 rebrand.
LG Electronics uses Avenir extensively in branding, advertising andhardware such as cell phone keypads.
