  • Brazilian Portuguese is the national language in Brazil. This means that it is the main language used in government, the media, education and so on. Brazil also has some indigenous languages, such as Guarani, which are spoken by a small number of people in certain regions. English as a foreign language has been taught in private language schools as well as in government schools in Brazil for a number of years now. Teachers feel students in Brazil need to learn English because it is used for internationa communication and will help the country in its trade links with the rest of the world. It will also help Brazil to keep up to date with the latest developments in science and technology, which are mostly reported in English.
