• Food Security Day – Thursday 9 May 2019 8.00am – 4.30pm How is the world going to feed itself into the future and what is going to be the effects on the environment, animal and human welfare and biosecurity? Consider the crucial food security issues facing humanity up to 2050. During the day a series of experts from around the world will review the ‘assets’ available to meet this need and to consider the environmental, welfare and biosecurity implications. These will have a global perspective whilst also highlighting the Australian perspective and the role of our animal industries.

Cindy Adams, MSW, PhD is Professor in the Department of Veterinary Clinical and Diagnostic Sciences at the University of Calgary. Professor Adams has designed and directed the first veterinary communication curriculum in North America and pioneered a research program regarding communication in veterinary medicine. Her research has focused on communication education, veterinary-client communication in large and small animal contexts, animal
welfare, companion animal death and human grief. She has presented widely and advised veterinarians, veterinary practice teams and veterinary educators throughout North America, Europe, Australia and the Caribbean.

The aim of the session is for veterinarians to present succinct inspirational stories and food for thought to the profession. Eight shortlisted speakers will present for 10 minutes about their passion in life and for the veterinary profession.

Delia is an epidemiologist and veterinarian with 20 years experience in developing countries. She is a graduate from several leading universites including the National University of Ireland, Edinburgh University, the Free University Berlin and Cornell University. She leads research on zoonoses and foodborne disease at the International Livestock
Research Institute in Kenya and the CGIAR Research Program on Agriculture for Human Nutrition and Health. Her main research focus is food safety in the domestic markets of developing countries.

Don Broom (UK) | Stream: Welfare, Cattle, Industry and Food Security DayDonald Broom is Emeritus Professor of Animal Welfare at Cambridge University, Department of Veterinary Medicine. His research concerns scientific assessment of animal welfare, cognitive abilities of animals, ethics and sustainable farming. He was Chairman or Vice Chairman of EU Scientific Committees on Animal Welfare 1990 – 2012. He has 360 refereed papers and 11 books.
Sessions include:
• Aspects of assessing pain during disease and operations in farm animals• Some animal production methods are unsustainable: factors include poor welfare• Welfare sentience and law: an international perspective • Sentience, welfare, ethics and human entertainment• Tourism and marine mammal welfare• The welfare of animals during transport
Gonçalo da Graça Pereira (Portugal) | Stream: BehaviourGonçalo has a Master in Clinical Ethology and Animal Welfare at the Faculty of Veterinary from the Universidad Complutense de Madrid, a PhD in Veterinary Science at the Institute of Biomedical Science Abel Salazar in O’Porto and Diplomate by the European College of Animal Welfare and Behavioural Medicine. He is President of the European College of Animal Welfare and Behavioural Medicine (ECAWBM) and Vice-President of the European Society of Veterinary Clinical Ethology (ESVCE).
Sessions include:
• Environmental Enrichment: can living conditions lead to cat's behavioural problems?• Is it simply a toilet or details make the difference? Approaching main causes of elimination problems• I’m getting bald! Is it stress? Feline psychogenic alopecia• Who is guilty? Mind? Body? Jerzy Gawor (Poland) | Stream: Dentistry and Unusual PetsDr Jerzy Paweł Gawor graduated from the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Academy of Agriculture in Wrocław Poland, has a PhD, and is a Diplomate of the American Veterinary Dental College (AVDC) and European Veterinary Dental College (EVDC). He is Past President of the Federation of European Companion Animal Veterinary Associations and President Elect of the European Veterinary Dental College.

Gayle Hallowell (UK) | Stream: EquineGayle graduated from the University of Cambridge and then completed a large animal rotating internship and combined internal medicine and critical care residency at the Royal Veterinary College, London. She then completed a PhD investigating aortic valve prolapse in the horse at the University of Nottingham. She is currently Professor in Veterinary Internal Medicine and Critical Care at the University of Nottingham. She is clinically active spending 60% of her time in the clinic and undertakes clinically based and informed research, particularly relating to gastric and cardiovascular disease. Her other interests include fluid therapy and blood gas analysis.
Sessions include:
• Practical fluid therapy for use in the field and clinic• Getting the most from clinical pathology – what’s useful and what’s not• Case discussion on the management of the sick foal• Case discussion of when a colic is not a colic• Cardiovascular derangement in the critically ill horse• Case discussions on equine emergency and trauma cases
Gudrun Ravetz (UK) | Stream: Business and IndustryGudrun still does not know what she wants to be when she grows up so is thankful for the varied career the veterinary degree has given her. Gudrun is a Past President of the British Veterinary Association and is Head Veterinary Officer for Simply Health Professionals.Gudrun has spent time in a variety of clinical roles as well as industry and management. She also has a graduate diploma in law and a post graduate certificate in business.Gudrun has an interest in the challenges and opportunities around veterinary recruitment and retention as well as what lies ahead for the veterinary profession and animal health and welfare.

Rikke M Schultz (Denmark) | Stream: AcupunctureDr Rikke Schultz graduated from the Veterinary University in Copenhagen in 1992. She has spent 5 years in a mixed practice in Iceland and 8 years in a large equine practice in Denmark. Since 2005 she has had her own holistic equine practice, and in 2011 she participated in animal fascia and anatomy research at University of Copenhagen where she also serves as censor at exams in veterinary anatomy. She holds qualifications in veterinary acupuncture by IVAS, and equine osteopathy. She is a board member of European Veterinary Society of Osteopathy.

Catherine Sturgeon (UK) | Stream: Small AnimalCatherine Sturgeon, BVetMed(hons) CertSAS DipECVS MRCVS, RCVS & ECVS recognized specialist in veterinary soft tissue surgery. Catherine Sturgeon qualified from the Royal Veterinary College, London, UK in 1994, attained her surgical diploma in 2004 and the RCVS specialist status in soft tissue surgery from 2008. Having worked as both a GP vet and specialist in surgery in the UK, Catherine enjoys both the practical and teaching aspects of her career, establishing Visiting Vet Specialists in 2014.Sessions include:• Adrenal surgery• Biliary Tract Surgery• Caesarean section: Optimise your approach• Feline tail pull injury• Feline urethral obstruction and rupture

Child care – parents room – Carers Pass.The parent’s room is located in Level 1 in close proximity to the exhibition and session rooms. Carers passes are available and provide access to the conference, exhibition, and sessions and allows parents/delegates nursing children to be provided with assistance.
