WE BEGIN OUR NEW
AUXILIARY YEAR WITH …
“STARS & STRIPES &
VETERANS FOREVER”
“SERVING OUR VETERANS
WITH ALOHA!”
Dear Department Auxiliary Members,
I am so honored and privileged to be writing this article as your newly installed Department Presi-dent. I cannot even begin to tell you how exciting this is and how much I look forward to this year.
First, I would like to thank Jr. Past President Darlene for all of her support and encouragement and con-gratulate her on all that was accomplished during her term and all she has done for our Veterans. A BIG thank you also goes to the great chairmen this past year. You all did a fantastic job and I hope you will come home with many awards from National Convention.
There were so many people who took part in my installation. I want you all to know how much I appreciate all your time, patience, and hard work in making my day special. I would like to take this time to say thank you to everyone …. Whether you gave a gift, card, or offered verbal congratulations … you touched my heart with your kindness.
A special “thank you” to Debbie Cenni for everything she has done to help me prepare for my year. New York State has NO idea how lucky we are to have her as our Dept. Secretary. A big “THANK YOU” to Kim White for taking the time to explain the budget to me – line by line. Kim’s patience with me was remarkable. I am so glad she did not strangle me and dump me in the woods!
This year I want to go back to basics. Let’s go back and remember why we are here in the first place … FOR OUR VETERANS! Let us each strive to help just one Veteran get what he/she needs and/or wants. If a Veteran needs medical or mental health help, let’s point him/her in the right direction. Most Veterans have families. Let’s find out what they need.
I encourage you to start off this year by attending OTI at Binghamton University on August 2 to 4. Join us as we go back to basics. OTI is a learning experience but also a fun weekend. I hope your reservation was sent before the deadline. OTI is always
enjoyable to join your Auxiliary brothers and sisters and make new friends and share ideas.
I would love to see more Auxiliary members attend this year’s Fall Conference. You ask, “where is it?” Answer: At the Radisson Hotel in Corning. When? Answer: October 18 to 20, 2019. Hope you can attend.
I am sure you are all well aware that the Auxiliary keeps getting smaller and smaller. We are not getting new members like we have in the past. We must focus and concentrate on informing the community what we do as the VFW Auxiliary. Let’s get out there and share our stories about our Veterans and how the Auxiliary makes a difference in their lives and our own lives. You have no idea how many people are totally unaware about who we are or what we do. We need to let more people know exactly what our mission is … which is helping our Veterans and their families lead a happy and productive life.
Our Veterans have sacrificed so much for us. Isn’t time we pay it forward? My year is just beginning and we have a great deal to accomplish in a very short period of time. I have confidence in you and know we can succeed. We have so many loyal, talented, and dedicated members. Members are not forced to be members. Members are members because they WANT TO BE MEMBERS!
Please note the following reminders: The Auxiliary President and Secretary
must have their bond processed by August 31. This can be done directly in MALTA. If you are a new officer or need assistance, contact Dept. Treasurer Kim or Secretary Debbie.
The Donation report form (Guidebook page 6) should be submitted to Department Treasurer Kim White by September 30th.
Submit Officer Change Form to the Department Secretary (Guidebook page 53) if your Auxiliary has a change in officer or there is a change in contact information.
New Treasurer’s should file IRS Form 8822-B within 60 days. Contact Department Secretary Debbie Cenni if you need the form.
We listened! The printed Auxiliary News is back! Presidents are expected to share their complimentary copy with their members.
God Bless You All and
God Bless the United States of America.
“Stars & Stripes & Veterans Forever!”

Another year of serving and supporting our Veterans and their causes has begun. ONE way we can and should
do this is through membership. We all have a loved one that gave us our eligibility to join. Our loved one put
his/her life on the line for us so we can live in the land of the free. It is very important that we never forget this loved one’s
gift. Our gift to them is through membership. We must not only maintain our membership numbers but increase our
membership numbers each year. In turn this gives the VFW and Auxiliary the membership numbers and power they need to
influence Congress to maintain promised benefits and to legislate for new and/or improved goals for our veterans. Here are
a few avenues by which we are going to accomplish our membership goal of 100 percent plus.
1. Adopt A Member: This is a program promotion designed to assist members who may be having financial difficulties,
hardships, illness, etc., and help them to pay their dues. Paying dues forward is a caring way to assist our members and
also helps our veterans. Maintaining and increasing our membership gives our veterans the power they need in
Congress to maintain their benefits and entitlements and to legislate for other issues and goals needed for them. 2. Serving our Veterans with Aloha: This year we are offering a 10-round fight with challenges each month for
Auxiliaries to raise funds for their Relief Fund. There is a different challenge each month for you to participate in.
Round one (1) will go to the Auxiliary with the most continuous member dues processed by August 31, 2019. The
Auxiliary will receive $100.00 for their Relief Fund to pay it forward in Adopting Members in need. 3. Stars & Stripes & Veterans Forever: A challenge from your Department Membership Chairman (that would be
me!!) to each District Membership Chairman to remain in contact with their component Auxiliaries they mentor
through District Schools of Instructions at District Meetings or other means such as group emails, mailings, phone etc.
This challenge includes: to be conscious of component Auxiliary’s status in membership, to ensure each Auxiliary does
its best through their mentoring to achieve every goal set, and to reach 100 percent plus by June 30, 2020. Each District
Membership Chairman must send a Progress Report to the Department Membership Chairman (again that’s me!!) each
quarter. Judging will take place at the June Convention by a panel chosen by Department President Debbie Casella. THE TOP TEN STEPS TO SUCCESS:
Ø 10. Just keep trying. Ø 9. Try to determine what is working. Ø 8. Try to determine what is not working. Ø 7. Try to find someone who’s done it. Ø 6. Try and ask for help.
Ø 5. Try it again tomorrow. Ø 4. Try it a little differently Ø 3. Try once more. Ø 2. Try again. Ø 1. Try.
4. We Stand, We Fight, We Win Together: To an Auxiliary that has best served their VFW and Auxiliary through acts
of kindness and support. In an essay, you are required to show how, by this togetherness, your Auxiliary helped
improve its retention, recruitment, and rejoining of lapsed members. The essay must also demonstrate how you can
“stand, fight, and win” together as a VFW community to accomplish goals for the betterment of all memberships. 5. Unwavering Support for Uncommon Heroes: This will be the fourth annual traveling award. To enter you must
submit details on how you promoted a successful year in membership for your Auxiliary. 6. Increase Membership by 10 Award: This award is based on membership as of June 30, 2019 numbers and ending
June 1, 2020. To qualify your Auxiliary must increase its membership quota by ten (10) members.
v Auxiliaries achieving 100 percent in membership by March 31, 2020 will receive a banner.
v The details and guidelines for each promotion are in the Guidebook. Contact me if you do not have a Guidebook!
My contact information is at the top of this newsletter page!
v Please send your monthly reports to me by the 1st day of each month to receive credit.
v Please, please, please remember the love you have for the veteran that gave you your eligibility and your freedom by
paying your dues. The ink of our freedom is our veterans’ blood. Let’s show the love my brothers and sisters.
Thank you for your anticipated attention to this matter.
With … “Stars & Stripes & Veterans Forever” New York will
continue to lead the way – to show the love and support for our veterans –
and will … “Serve Our Veterans with Aloha!”

Dear Auxiliary Members, I would like to begin by thanking
all of the wonderful members who sent notes, cards, emails,
and text messages since my recent accident. The doctor is
pleased with my progress, however, it will be a very long
road to recovery. Stay off of ladders … if only climbing to
the third rung!
Back to business! My very old faithful MacBook Pro
crashed right after convention! Most files were backed up
with the exception of email data bases. I ask for your
patience while contact groups are rebuilt which may take
several months. Each month the Auxiliary News will be
posted on the Department website at nyvfwauxiliary.org.
The Department Facebook page is Department of New York VFW Auxiliary.
I thank all those Auxiliaries that submitted Installation
Reports immediately following their installation and for
carefully proofreading them for accuracy. A hard copy was
to be sent to the Department Secretary even if entered in
MALTA. Several Auxiliaries may be closing. Our Chief of
Staff and Deputies are diligently assisting those members to
get them transferred into other Auxiliaries.
Presidents on all levels received a Guidebook in their
packet. You are to share the Program information with your
Chairmen. Packets also included a mini directory. I expect
to have the full directory completed by fall conference.
Remember to notify the Dept. Secretary
of all officer changes or change in officer
contact information (Guidebook page 53).
Secretaries, on all levels, must be aware of their
responsibilities of the office. All officers and members
should have a copy of the current Podium Edition … and be
familiar with (read) its content! Podium editions are
available from the VFW Store. Secretaries should also have
a copy of Robert’s Rules in case a point of parliamentary
procedure is raised. Bonds must be processed by August 31,
2019. Be sure “Bond” is included on the August meeting
agenda. Treasurer’s may process their bond in MALTA.
President Debbie listened to you! The printed Auxiliary News is back! Presidents will receive a complimentary
copy. They are expected to share this valuable resource with
their members. Subscriptions are available for $15.00. The
newsletter will be posted on the Department website by the
25th
of each month at nyvfwauxiliary.org.
I look forward to working with you this year and am here
to help you in any way possible. Contact me if you have a
question or need assistance.

… “Stars & Stripes & Veterans Forever!” Loyally, Debbie
Dear Auxiliary members,
The members of this organization are just amazing!
I missed seeing everyone at the Department Convention
but the doctor would not let me travel.
Thank you for all your prayers, thoughts, cards, calls,
notes, and kind words of healing after my recent fall. I
had a head wound and many bruises.
I look forward to seeing everyone real soon and hope to
Be able to attend Fall Conference.
Best wishes to President Debbie on a successful year.
My love to you all … Carol Camillo

This year the Americanism Program is going to show its PRIDE in America through its many categories. We are going to show Patriotism, Respect, Integrity, Dedication and Education.
We will show Patriotism by celebrating patriotic holidays for the past, present and future. Respect through “Wreaths Across America” to honor our deceased Veterans and showing respect for our Flag and our past. Integrity by honoring our Gold Star Mothers/Family Day to embrace the present. Dedication by sponsoring “In Lieu of Christmas Cards” and “POW/MIA Services which are both dedicated to the present. Education by educating our youth and communities with Flag Education, hosting a Family Freedom Festival, Honor Flights with attendants and awarding the Smart/Maher VFW National Citizenship Education Teacher Award for our future.
Speaking of Family Freedom Festival – why not have your Family Freedom Festival in conjunction with National Night Out on August 6, 2019? The Family Freedom Festival is for Auxiliaries, County Councils and Districts to show your community what the Post/Auxiliary offers. The National Night Out is an annual community building campaign that promotes community partnerships and neighborhood camaraderie. It would be a nice way to share with everyone in a single place. The Family Freedom Tool Kit is available from National’s website (vfwauxiliary.org) under Resources tab.
While mentoring, I heard a statement that I have always remembered and would like to share with you. “Respect the Past – Embrace the Present – Educate the Future.
The Past is Your Lesson – The Present is Your Gift – The Future is Your Motivation.”
Perhaps we can think about this statement while … “Serving Our Veterans with Aloha” and remembering … “Stars & Stripes & Veterans Forever.” Loyally, Dolores

Dear Sisters and Brothers, I can tell by the many reports I have already received that
everyone is well on their way to “Serving Our Veterans with Aloha”
and honoring the “Stars & Stripes & Veterans Forever.”
Many times when a Veteran returns home from serving our country, they are confused and get lost in the
great scheme of things. To help those veterans navigate the “system” the VFW has Service Officers. Service Officers
provide assistance to veterans and help them obtain their earned benefits and services by:
• Assisting in filing claims for disability, GI bill, education; death and pension as well as
• Assisting in receiving timely healthcare (hospital, outpatient and specialty care)
You and your Auxiliary can support Service Officers so they can continue to carry out these services to our veterans by
sponsoring a fundraiser or making a cash donation. Checks should be made payable to “VFW” earmarked “NVS” and sent to VFW National Headquarters – Attn: NVS – 406 West 34th Street, 11th Floor, Kansas City, MO 64111
The Veteran and Military Support (VMS) consists of 4 programs
• Military Assistance Program (MAP) Posts and Districts can receive financial assistance to sponsor events for Veterans and deploying military.
• Sport Clips Help A Hero Scholarship
Provides qualifying Service Members and Veterans with educational financial assistance up to $5,000.
• Unmet Needs – Provides up to $1,500. for basic life needs to service members and their families.
• Operation Uplink – Offers FREE phone time to deployed service members and hospitalized veterans.
Application for Virtual PINs may be found at https://vfwprograms.formstack.com/forms/virtualpinrequest
Remember, participation in the Veterans and Family Support Program includes any activity, outside of a hospital setting,
that supports Veterans and their families. It includes any activity that ensures a suitable standard of living through financial
and moral support or a simple act of kindness. Let Us Stand up for Them, They Stood up for Us! A quote from Iraq and

Today’s political world is transforming around us every day. As John F. Kennedy once said
“Efforts and Courage are not Enough without Purpose and Direction.” That is most true today,
where every citizen is defending the Constitution and living by the Bill of Rights of our Founding
Fathers to protect the freedoms we have living in an American democracy. Legislation is the most
important tool which affects our daily lives. Grassroots efforts in the United States have come alive
and the peoples voices are being heard.
We all have a part to play in the legislative process. Running for office, passing petitions for a
candidate, participating in GOTV (Get Out the Vote) events, writing editorials to your local newspapers, setting up booths at
farmers markets or other locations and passing out the VFW Priority Goals and other legislative materials. You can find
more information at found at www.vfwauxiliary.org/resources.
I encourage everyone to sign up to receive the VFW Action Corps if you do not already receive it. This weekly newsletter
includes all federal congresssional hearings and testimony offered by VFW staff and officers. You can sign up online at
www.vfw.org/advocacy/grassroots-efforts.
New York State has made great strides in joining other states with early voting, which begins with the November 6, 2019
election cycle. New York State also started with a new primary date of June 25th. We hope everyone who was eligible
participated in that local primary. It may take some getting used to. We hope your local jurisdiction had great voter turn-out
for the first June primary. Remember … change can be for the good of the common cause! Look for more information to
come as the New York State Board of Elections posts the new election law changes.
Remember to report, report, report! I have been receiving reports that have been very well written and
documented. Best wishes to each and every Auxiliary and member for a great upcoming year!

We cannot all be famous
Or listed in “Who’s Who,”
But every person, great or small,
Has important work to do …
For seldom do we realize
The importance of small deeds
Or to what degree
Or greatness
Unnoticed kindness leads …
For if everybody brightened up
The spot on which they’re standing
By being more considerate
And a little less demanding,
This changing world
Would very soon
Eclipse the evening star,
If everybody brightened up
The corner where they are.

You may all be wondering how I was chosen to become your representative. Let me tell you, I wondered myself! My curiosity got the best of me and I worked up the courage to ask the Big Guy who wears the Red Suit. It was little unnerving to hear him start to laugh. The Big Guy stated, “Buddy! It was because of your name.” In a total state of shock, I yelled, “What????” The Big Guy started to laugh even harder and with tears running down his face, he simply said, “HR thought it was cute!” Too stunned for words, I simply looked at the Big Guy in disbelief. He took me by surprise and exclaimed, “Get it! Buddy as in “Buddy”® Poppy!” and he doubled over in more laughter. For the record, I didn’t get it, not then and certainly not now.
Wouldn’t you know it, before I got the chance to leave the room and make my way to HR the Big Guy in the Red Suit sat me down. With a smile on his face and a twinkle in his eye, the Big Guy explained the obligations and responsibilities of this position. His smile continued to grow and in a whispering voice he then asked me if I would accept this assignment. “Yes,” was my only reply. You see, to the best of my knowledge, I don’t think anyone ever uttered “no” to the Big Guy in the Red Suit.
So, here I am! I will be assisting your Department Chairman, Karen. Together, as a Team, we will provide materials to assist you in being Prepared to Promote for Participation in the “Buddy”® Poppy / VFW National Home for Children Program. Does anyone know if Karen ever gets tired of using that 3 P’s catch phrase? Anyone? Gives new meaning to tried and true…
First item on my agenda, I mean “our” agenda is to address email program promotions. If you prefer to receive these program promotions directly to your mailbox, rather than wait for them to be forwarded, please contact us at [email protected]. Simply type the word “ADD” in the subject line. With my magic fingers, I will be implementing a new approach. Did I mention that Karen really doesn’t like to change unless given a valid reason? This will be an interesting challenge. Let the fun and games begin!
Time to go, I have run out of space for this article allotted by the newsletter editor! I am definitely looking forward to working with all of you with fun and laughter.
Thank you all your cards and phone calls since the loss of my sister, Rosie. I deeply appreciate your thoughtfulness and support.

MENTORING FOR LEADERSHIP – DORIS (DEE) IPPOLITO, CHAIRMAN 24 BLUE JAY CIRCLE ~ LANCASTER, NY 14086
Telephone: (716) 440-3411 – Email: [email protected]
Welcome! Welcome! Welcome! Welcome! Welcome! Welcome!
Dear Brothers and Sisters,
Mentoring for Leadership is about Welcoming!
Welcoming current members – Welcoming experienced members – Welcoming members who have been AWOL.
Mentoring for Leadership is an effective program that will make a difference in the future of your Auxiliary!
First, you need to inform your Auxiliary of this new program entitled Mentoring for Leadership.
Then, you need to seek volunteers to become Mentors for Leadership.
ANYONE can Mentor for Leadership! ANYONE who has helped with programs …
ANYONE who is willing to help in projects … ANYONE who feels that the Auxiliary is important to them …
ANYONE who cares about Veterans and their families.
You can be a Mentor for Leadership if you C.A.R.E. All you need to do is …
C . . . Catch the member when they first join (and continue to personally support them). A. . . . Ask them to participate. R . . . Remember what it felt like to be new. E . . . Engage them in a program that fits their interest and skills.
Your Auxiliary will benefit from Mentoring for Leadership! Welcome EVERY member. Create a committee to plan
methods for contacting “experienced” members monthly to invite them to meetings, to let them know what is going on with
your Post and Auxiliary and to encourage them to be involved.
Each of your members had a personal love of a Veteran when they joined. Each member wanted to help our Veterans and
their families. YOU can HELP each member remember that personal love. YOU can help each member know how they can
help now. You will be amazed at the change in your Auxiliary as more and more members become re-invested in working
for our Veterans!
Report monthly to your Auxiliary and to me on your progress. Looking forward to hearing from you! Loyally, Dee “By … Serving Our Veterans with Aloha!” we honor our “Stars & Stripes & Veterans Forever.”
PRESIDENT’S SPECIAL PROJECT – LINDA LaROSA, CHAIRMAN
120 HIGHLAND AVENUE ~ MAYBROOK, NY 12543 Telephone: (914) 805-2743 – Email: [email protected]
What a very Special “Special Project” we have this year.
I’m so excited to be helping President Debbie with this!
The goal of America’s VetDogs is to help those who have served
Our Country to live with dignity and independence.
We’d like to help them too! Our goal is to raise enough to sponsor at least one dog.
I received several inquiries about how to obtain printed material concerning America’s VetDogs. Visit www.vetdogs.org
to request written material to help you spread the word about what these awesome people do for our Veterans.
While I was recently shopping at a franchise store, I discovered a line of dog food and treats
manufactured by Bil-Jac. Company founders, Bill and Jack Kelly, served in the armed forces during
the early 1940’s in World War II. Several years later, when they returned to their hometown of
Medina, Ohio, Bill and Jack seized the opportunity to create a superior quality pet food that would fill
a gap in the pet food market at that time. Their company is still in business 65 years later!
At the current time, a portion of the proceeds from every Bil-Jac
purchase will be donated to support America’s VetDogs.
All you Pet Parents out there, please be on the lookout for these
Special treats! ****And remember to send a report if you buy some of these treats for your Furbaby! Loyally, Linda

CANCER GRANT FUND – MARGARET SHELDON, CHAIRMAN 6915 WILEY STREET ~ CHERRY CREEK, NY 14723
Telephone: (716) 296-5418 – Email: [email protected]
Please be aware of any changes in your body! If you feel something different, make an appointment with your doctor and get checked out. Do not wait until it is too late! Early diagnosis is one way we can fight this horrible disease.
One of the greatest gifts of belonging to the VFW Auxiliary is the ability to apply for a $550 cancer grant. A cancer grant is a gift from the National organization that never has to be paid back. Members in good standing, who have belonged for at least one full year, are entitled to apply for two lifetime grants ... one year apart.
Cancer Grant Fund donation tickets were included in President’s packets that were distributed at the June Convention. The requested donation for each Cancer Grant Fund ticket is $2.00 per member based on your Auxiliary membership as of June 30, 2019. Cancer Grant Fund ticket stubs will be entered into a cash drawing at the Fall and Spring conference.
❤ First place – $75.00 ❤ Second place – $50.00 ❤ Third place – $25.00 Chairman Margaret requests that Cancer Grant Fund tickets be returned in sheets if it is convenient for your Auxiliary.
However, if your Auxiliary prefers to cut the tickets, then do so!
Make checks payable to VFW Auxiliary Department of NY earmarked “Cancer Grant Donation.” Checks and completed ticket stubs should be returned to Margaret Sheldon, Chairman. (For your convenience, a self-addressed envelope was provided in the President’s packet).
“In Memory Of” and “In Honor Of” Luminaries will be available at the Fall Conference and Spring Conference for a donation of $5.00. The luminary lighting will take place at the June 2020 Convention. For the Fall Conference each DISTRICT is asked to bring a fall-themed basket to be raffled off. Candy bars will be available for a donation of $1.00 each!
Each Auxiliary is asked to take a NEW Medium sized Teddy Bears to your Fall District meeting. District Presidents will deliver the Teddy Bears to a local Cancer Hospital or Cancer facility. Teddy bears provide children with comfort as as they so very bravely face their treatments.
Honoring our … “Stars & Stripes &Veterans Forever” will provide us with memories while … “Serving Our Veterans with Aloha!” Loyally, Margaret
YOUTH ACTIVITIES – JUSTINE ROBLES, CHAIRMAN
111 SOUTH THIRD STREET – APT. 1C ~ BROOKLYN, NY 11249 Telephone: (347) 760-0879 – Email: [email protected]
Greetings Brothers and Sisters, I want to thank Madam President Debbie Casella for appointing me as this year’s Youth Activities Program Chairman. Our YOUTH of today are our LEADERS of tomorrow. We can do so much to show how our YOUTH can help in our communities and work with our VETERANS.
Auxiliaries can sponsor a youth group in their community or create a youth group in your very own Auxiliary using the same guidelines as the Auxiliary. Remember to include youth in our programs and show them that they can be a part of our Auxiliary family.
There are many awards and citations that can be presented to our youth. I encourage you to visit the National Auxiliary website at www.vfwauxiliary.org. Awards and citations can be presented individually or to a group. Present Random Acts of Patriotism (R.A.P.) coins or cards to a child you witness saluting the flag correctly or helping a veteran in need. Cards can be downloaded from the Auxiliary website. I will have R.A.P coins available for purchase at the Fall and Spring Conference.
Patriotism through Literacy is one aspect of the Youth Activities Program. Through literacy, we can teach our children about important events of our history. Let’s get our children back into the habit of opening a book and take a journey into the past. Summer vacation is here … a perfect time for you Auxiliary to host a read-a-thon.
During the month of September, Auxiliaries will be asked to collect age appropriate historical books and donate them to local libraries, schools, shelters or children’s hospitals. Please be sure to take pictures of all books collected and send them in with your reports.
Remember to REPORT, REPORT, REPORT!!! by the 1st of every month. Loyally, Justine

CHIEF OF STAFF AND EXTENSION – KAREN A. DOTSON, PDP CHAIRMAN 19 CALGARY LANE ~ BINGHAMTON, NY 13901
Telephone: (607) 648-9271 – Email: [email protected]
Dear Members, Julie Andrews sang “Do Re Mi” in the Sound of Music. The introduction was, “Let’s start at the very beginning. A very good place to start!” I begin this new Auxiliary year with a few frequently asked questions of the Chief of Staff.
1. What are the 5 Essentials of an Auxiliary? The 5 Essentials of an Auxiliary are as follows: a. Each Auxiliary should have at least 10 business meetings per year (See Bylaws Section 210); b. Dues should be paid on at least ten members on or before February 1st of the current year (See Section 207); c. Auxiliaries must be up to date with submission of the quarterly audits by Trustees (See Section 814); d. Officers must be elected, installed and reported to National Headquarters no later than June 30th. e. The offices of President and Treasurer MUST be bonded by August 31st.
2. What does the Auxiliary President need to provide to her/his Post Commander at the beginning of each new year? According to the Bylaws, Auxiliary Presidents, within 30 days after assuming the office of President, should provide an itemized report of the financial and membership status of the VFW Auxiliary to the Post Commander. The report can be as simple as providing a copy of the most current Audit and notate the total number of Auxiliary members.
3. What rules of parliamentary procedure does the VFW Auxiliary follow? Roberts Rules of Order, Newly Revised shall govern on all points not covered in the Bylaws. See Section 916 – Rules of Order. The book can be purchased online or at a book store. This book is not stocked with the VFW Store
4. How can I prepare for my first meeting? a. Review the 2019-2020 Guidebook included in your Presidents packets. Highlight requests for each program; b. Provide copies of each program for your Auxiliary Chairmen. Note: The Guidebook will be available on the
Department Website; c. Ensure that the bank signature cards for the President and Treasurer are up to date at the bank; d. Contact the Secretary to follow up on any old business or open items not previously completed; e. Prepare an agenda for your meeting; f. Ensure you have your Podium Book, Gavel, Agenda, and Auxiliary News for each of your meetings.
Henry Ford said, “Coming together is a beginning. Keeping together is progress. Working together is success.” As a Department we are coming together as we start a new year and will work together to attain success! Contact me if you have any questions. I look forward to working with all members of the VFW Auxiliary Department of NY team as we …

INSPECTIONS – BONNIE L. BURGY, COORDINATOR 330 EAST BLOOMFIELD STREET – APT. 2 – ROME, NY 13440
Tel: Home: (315) 533-6426 – Cell: (315) 225-9564 – Email: [email protected]
Welcome to the new year! There are many changes to Inspections this year. The inspection form is now two-pages. Inspectors, be sure to answer all questions. New this year! The Department President will be inspecting all Districts and County Councils.
Inspectors, be sure to read the instruction sheets which will be included in the packet received from the District President. A School of Instruction will be held at either the District organizational meeting or at your first District meeting. Please attend so that you will know what you are to do at the inspection.
If possible, Auxiliary Presidents are asked not to postpone inspections. If you must reschedule, contact your inspector as soon as possible to arrange another date. Inspectors should request that the President, Secretary and Treasurer arrive a little early to complete the inspection so that the start of the meeting is not held up. Inspection notifications should be sent to the Auxiliary president so it can be read at the meeting the month before the inspection is scheduled. This will help to make sure everything required is brought to the inspection.
District Presidents should read all instructions on how to conduct your official visits and inspections when you make your visit. Notify the Auxiliary in advance so that can be read at the meeting before you attend so all required items are available.
Inspectors, after the inspection has been completed, be sure all items are answered. Within a few days send your inspection sheets to the District President. Be sure to include remarks and be honest! Inspections let the Department know if an Auxiliary needs assistance. After reviewing the reports, District Presidents should send them to me as soon as possible!
DO NOT HOLD THEM UNTIL YOU HAVE SEVERAL TO MAIL! THE DATE TO COMPLETE INSPECTIONS HAS BEEN EXTENDED TO JANUARY 15, 2020.

HOSPITAL – PEGGY SCHWEITZER, CHAIRMAN 19 MONTAQUE DRIVE ~ DILLSBURG, PA 17019
Telephone: (315) 853-2419 – Email: [email protected]
Wow! I am thrilled to serve as the Department Hospital Program Chairman this year. I thank President Debbie for this chairmanship. President Debbie said, “we are going to have a FUN year!” That includes what we do for the Hospital Program!
As some of you know, I belong to the Military Order of Cootie (MOCA). Hospital work is a big part of the mission of MOCA members. When we visit patients in VA medical and non-medical facilities, Veterans and nursing homes, and clinics, we dress up. I cannot begin to tell how many smiles, giggles and laughter we get from the patients we visit when we are dressed up in silly outfits and enter their rooms. The way we are uniquely dressed brings smiles to their faces and opens up great conversations. Remember, laughter is the best medicine!
So, this year, I ask that when you visit a veteran in a hospital related facility, please consider dressing up in a silly outfit and watch the reactions you receive. Your outfit does not have to be fancy! You might wear something as simple as a head band (I call them “ears”) which are available for sale at most local discount stores. “Ears” are available for nearly all of the holidays. I have six different “ears” which I wear. You may want to wear a costume or dress in something that is really silly looking.
Should you fulfill my request to dress up when you go visiting, please have someone take your picture (or take a selfie) and send me a print of that picture when you send in your report. Pictures can be printed at many retailers. Let’s have some fun this year. Our Veterans have done so much for us. The least we can do is to make them smile and laugh!
The Veteran and Military Suicide Awareness Blue Teardrop sticker is the symbol to raise suicide awareness. Stickers can be downloaded at www.vfwauxiliary.org/resources. Wear the teardrop to open up a conversation.
Refer to pages 18-19 in the Program Guidebook for more information about the Hospital Program. I will also touch upon important Hospital Program topics and promotions in the Auxiliary News. Feel free to contact me with any questions.

Check out the Department of New York’s Facebook page at Department of New York VFW Auxiliary
It is time to start making a record of your Auxiliary’s year. You may ask, “How can I do that?” Well, it is easy and exciting! • Get your camera ready and start taking pictures of your events. • Have paper and a pen handy. Write down the details of the event … dates, times and special guests who attended. • Start collecting newspaper clippings that document your Auxiliary special events. • Start planning your media coverage and decide what’s newsworthy?
I encourage you to “Like” our Department Facebook page or “Join” the group if you haven’t already done so. By connecting with the Department’s Facebook page, you will stay informed with what is going on at the Department and National levels. Your Auxiliary benefit from a Facebook Page. Facebook is a fast way to get important information and events out quickly. Many Auxiliaries have limited budgets and resources for outreach to constituents, donors, the media and the public. While a web site can serve as an effective destination for an Auxiliary, many people these days consider web sites as places for background and archived information rather than an active and dynamic communications tool.
Presidents on all levels are asked to send pictures, along with a brief description about what your Auxiliary, Council, or District did when President Casella made her official visit. Photos and description must be sent to me within ten days of her visit. The more pictures the better! Include all the details regarding her visit! I also want to see your Facebook pages, and newsletters! I will feature vital and stimulating news and pictures on all our social media pages and in the Auxiliary News. Use your camera or smart phone and send high quality photos and write-ups as soon as possible after an event has occurred.
Photos will be reproduced for Debbie’s scrapbook(s). Be sure to include all the event details and correctly spell the names of those who are in the picture. Use local media outlets and social media to keep everyone up to date about your Auxiliary activities. Note! Photos may be sent electronically via email or texted! However, you must include the WHO? WHAT? WHERE? WHEN? and WHY?
It is an honor to serve as Department Historian/Media Relations Chairman this year. I will do so with much excitement! Honoring our … “Stars & Stripes & Veterans Forever” will provide us with wonderful memories while …
