  • There are few food cultures that contain such a high degree of sophistication, while remaining virtually unknown to the world at large. You can experience most Asian cuisines anywhere in the world, but there are next to none Myanmar restaurants outside the borders of this country. More than that, some gorgeous ethnic cuisines are notoriously hard to find even in Yangon. Myanmar food started to receive international recognition in the past few years, with world class chefs such as Anthony Bourdain kicking off world food TV shows in Yangon. We expect others to follow.

Burmese Food Shan FoodAs one of the most esteemed Myanmar ethnic cuisines, it is, by itself, part of the worlds great food cultures. It features a wonderful display of noodles, meats, vegetables, in addition to the delicious Shan Tofu (or Burmese Tofu, as it is incorrectly referred to worldwide). Shan noodles are part of almost every nations diet in Myanmar, and Yangon is home to some world-class Shan restaurants.

Rakhine FoodHaving the pristine ocean at its footsteps, the Rakhine cuisine is where fresh seafood meets strong, flavory spices. From fried oysters to lobster sashimis, seaweed, fish egg salads and crab curries, Rakhine food has more than a few ways to set you palate on fire. While not as ubiquitous as the Shan cuisine, it is well represented in Yangon and in the Rakhine state. Kokang Food

As a mixture of Shan and Yunnan Chinese, the Kokang are blessed with a mind-blowing (and unique) melange of two of the world greatest eating cultures. The best place to experience Kokang high-end cuisine is Yangon.

Offering a wide variety of fresh and preserved fish and seafood, Burmese food features an amazing diversity of spicy curries, adding delicious Kyay Oos, hot Tom Yums, as well as fresh tropical ingredients, steamed bananas to pickled tea leafs, to the mix. Burmese food differs with region, local culture and terrain. Yangon or the Ayeyarwaddy delta is home to delicious fish and seafood, while landlocked Mandalay is unrivaled in mutton or mango. Kachin Food

Being, like the Shans, a landlocked nation, the Kachin rely on sweet-water fish, meats and vegetables, to create one of the most deliciously spicy pieces of gastronomy in the world. It is fairly represented in Yangon, featuring a couple of great restaurants. For an immersive experience in the Kachin cuisine, we recommend visiting the Kachin state.

Mon FoodDespite featuring a delicious cuisine, and being present in this land for thousands of years, as an old and sophisticated culture, there is to this date no representative Mon restaurant in Yangon. Exploring the Mon cuisine is still more of an ethnographical exercise, than a culinary one. The Mon state is, nevertheless, home to some breathtaking views, various religious and historical sites and a rich and fresh eating culture, based on the generosity of the Andaman Sea and of the warm, tropical climate.

Your itineraryYou will have the opportunity to encounter some of the best cuisine in Upper Burma, during your stay in the Bagan station, and will have plenty of opportunities to dive into the Shan cuisine, on the Inle Lake or in your journey into the Shan Hills. For anything else, Yangon will be a good host.
