Advanced Materials

Tightened regulations on pollution and energy consumption means that the application of advanced materials is playing a crucial role in vehicle light weighting and other game-changing automotive applications.

The reduced use of steel and increased applications of plastics, aluminium and composites, coupled with the exploration of nano-technology will enable advanced materials to be introduced and used increasingly in mass-produced vehicles.

We work with many of the motorsport giants and supporting supply chain that have developed and implemented advanced material technology on a smaller scale. We also work alongside OEMs, supply chain and R&D centres to find skilled individuals that will bring material diversification on a mass scale.

Pressure to implement new materials without sacrificing functionality, increasing cost or implementation time and effort has created demand for individual’s adept within R&D, design, material distribution, supply chain and production. The opportunity is open for the UK to lead in automotive technology development. Backed by industry, academia, centres of research and innovation, Government Strategy and funded by R&D funding programmes such as the Faraday Battery Challenge, there is a collaborative effort to develop and commercialise new technology. Electronics and software

The engine was the technology and engineering core of the 20th century car. Today, software, large computing power, and advanced sensors increasingly step into that role; enabling most modern innovations. From efficiency, connectivity, autonomous driving to electrification and new mobility solutions that will improve driver experience via a wide range of infotainment, telematics and vehicle diagnostics offerings.

In essence, contemporary vehicles run on code as much as they do gasoline. As the importance of electronics and software has grown, so too has the complexity, creating a greater need for electronics and software engineering skills.

Connected vehicles take us toward a mode of transport that is safer and more efficient, by enabling an interconnected driving experience. Cars will be connecting to their surroundings via the Internet, posing concern that this could expose connected cars, and the people in them, to potential risks from online threats.

Protecting networked production equipment in addition to intellectual property and the substantial amounts of data collected from the connected vehicle stored in the cloud, are also major concerns throughout the supply chain.

The benefits of connected cars, for manufacturers and consumers alike, will only be realised if the technology can be trusted. This posed risk has created a growing demand for cyber security experts.

In-demand skill-sets include cyber security, intrusion detection system engineering, secure software development, risk mitigation, cloud security, encryption, data security and SecOps.
