Sticker price is obviously going to be a major concern for drivers inthe market for a new car. However, there are other issues, including avehicle’s resale value and the public perception of a carmaker,which can also play an important role.

Two recently released consumer guides – J.D. Power and Associates andKelley Blue Book – looked at customer loyalty along with which of the 2011model-year vehicles were expected to maintain their value over time.

The “Avoider Study” from J.D. Power revealed that a bad prior experi-ence with a brand or a poor perception of a manufacturer’s reputation wasa bigger reason for avoiding a carmaker than it was in 2009. In contrast,concerns about the future of certain domestic brands have lessened fromthe previous year in deference to the slow-moving recovery in the automo-tive market.

Many domestic and Korean brands, including Ford, GMC, Hyundai, Kiaand Ram, were successful in improving customer perceptions of reliability.Other carmakers including Audi, Scion and Smart also saw an uptick inhow they were perceived.

Exterior styling was cited by35% of new-vehicle owners asmotive for avoiding an individualmodel. For premium brands, con-cerns over maintenance costsplayed a major role, despite anincreasing number of high-endbrands that provided free sched-uled repairs.

J.D. Power’s Customer Reten-tion Study looked at why ownersremained loyal to a certainbrand. More consumers said a“fun-to-drive” vehicle was thereason they stuck with a brand,while a smaller number said theywere faithful due to the resalevalue of their vehicle.

At 62%, Ford and Hondashared the highest rankingsamong brands in owner retention. According to thestudy, Ford’s retention rate was primarily due to itsEdge, F-Series and Fusion models, while theAccord, CR-V and Pilot models drove Honda’s suc-cess. Hyundai, Lexus and Toyota followed the twoleading manufacturers in owner retention rates.

Comparing the two top brands, Ford owners

stayed loyal because their vehicle was fun to driveor had good styling. Honda owners cited resalevalue and safety as reasons for repurchasing.

Kelley Blue Book’s annual best Resale ValueAwards, meanwhile, looked at how 2011 modelswere expected to retain their original list priceafter five years. The winning mainstream brand for

this year was Subaru, whileBMW took top honors in theluxury brand category.

The vehicles with the bestresale value for their indi-vidual categories were: Honda Fit (subcompact car);Mini Cooper (compact);Honda Accord (midsize);Ford Taurus (full-size);Lexus IS (near-luxury); AudiA5 (luxury); Subaru ImprezaWRX (sports); Ford MustangGT (high-performance);Volkswagen Golf TDI(hybrid/alternative energy);Honda CR-V (compact util-ity); Toyota FJ Cruiser (mid-size utility); GMC Acadia(full-size utility); BMW X5
