Dear Partners and Friends,
One of the first questions I get asked when I meet local companies is „What does Austria export? What are
Austrian companies known for? Which Austrian companies are invested here?”.
This page does not provide enough space to fully answer these questions but in a
nutshell I can tell you that most of Austria’s exports are highly specialized niche
products, mostly for the manufacturing industry. One third of our exports are
therefore classified as machinery. For example, you find Austrian machinery to be
very prominent in the plastics extrusion and blow moulding sectors but also in
plastic recycling and the production of woven plastic bags. Starlinger, Erema and
NGR are well known names among experts. But we also export exquisite consumer
goods. Specialized wine glasses from Riedel Glass and crystal jewellery and
decoration from Svarowksi are just two examples. Did you know that energy drinks
were invented in Austria and that Red Bull, Power Horse, Rox and many more are
all made in Austria?
Austria also has a long track record in world class engineering and
environmentally friendly industrial solutions. Austria is well known for its
renewable energy knowhow and products, e.g. the global leader for hydropower plant equipment is Andritz
Hydro, an Austrian company. We are also leaders in providing solutions for converting biomass to energy and in
the production of biogas and biodiesel (BDI - BioEnergy International, Bertsch and are just examples here).
Austria is known to provide excellent quality and service and to be a reliable technology partner. We are not
always the cheapest but we strive for quality rather than quantity. Most Austrian exporting companies are of
small or medium size, often family owned and existent since more than two generations. Therefore, you will not
find many subsidiaries of Austrian companies abroad. Though my big dream is that the infrastructural and eco-
political situation in West and Central Africa will improve to the extent that this region will become the next
industrial manufacturing hub, where Austrian companies can produce for their global markets.

AUSTRIA: A GLOBAL KNOWLEDGE CENTRE FOR RENEWABLE ENERGY
AUSTRIA MOVES TO SECOND PLACE IN THE WORLD‘S TOP DESTINATIONS FOR CONFERENCES,
SEMINARS AND MEETINGS
An impressive 1.5 million delegates attended conventions in Austria in 2016 – helping Vienna climb to second
place in the international ranking of conference destinations.
Austria is one of the world’s top locations for conferences, seminars
and annual general meetings. The sector is booming and once again
reported record results last year, with the number of events,
delegates and hotel overnight stays recorded by the Austrian
Convention Bureau all up on the previous year.
The number of events held in Austria rose 6.4% to 19,400, and the
total number of delegates was also up 5% to some 1.5 million event-
goers. Conferences, particularly international conferences, were the
key contributor to the rise in overnight stays in the Austrian events
industry in 2015, and that continued into 2016, with overnight stays up 5.5% to nearly 2.4 million. Events around
economic, political or medical topics generated the most stays.
Having hosted 186 international conferences, Vienna made second place in the International Congress and
Convention Association (ICCA) rankings for 2016, up two places on 2015. Paris hit the top spot with 196
international congresses, with Barcelona, Berlin, London, Singapore, Amsterdam, Madrid, Lisbon and Seoul
also ranking highly. Austria also managed to edge up the national rankings, climbing from 14th to 12th place.
The USA, Germany and the UK took the top spots.
Austria has helped lead the way in technology and expertise for the green energy sector, and the companies
operating here enjoy an excellent international reputation.
Austria plays a key role in developing renewable energy sources,
and its companies‘ research labs and development centres pro-
duce technologies whose efficiency, quality and environmental
standards have proved themselves all over the world. Interna-
tionally, companies are reacting to the volatile fossil fuel prices
by switching to modern energy technology based on renewable
energy sources – and relying more and more on top-quality prod-
ucts from Austria.
Located in Styria, Austria, the Green Tech Valley is the global hotspot for innovative energy and environmental
technologies and is home to 200 companies and research institutions developing the green technologies of the
future.
Pushing forward renewable energy technology has been a real priority for Austrian companies. Alongside the
environmental benefits, the ongoing development of sustainable energy technology makes a significant contri-
bution to the economy, since renewable fuels provide solutions to key problems of environmental policy, ener-
gy management, and other issues. Whether traditional, family-run firms or innovative newcomers, a whole
range of Austrian companies are making a name for themselves worldwide with their knowledge, products
and services.

ANDRITZ HYDRO UPGRADES POWER STATION IN THE DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC OF CONGO
ANDRITZ HYDRO, a member of the Andritz Group, is a worldwide provider of electro-mechanical equipment,
services and automation ("Water to Wire") for hydroelectric
power stations.
As leader of a consortium, ANDRITZ HYDRO has been awarded a
contract for refurbishment of the existing Mwadingusha
hydropower plant in the Katanga Province, DR Congo. The scope
of supply for ANDRITZ HYDRO comprises replacement of four
turbine units, generators, governors, inlet valves, exciters,
voltage regulation, and draft tube stop logs, including
dismantling, erection, and commissioning. The new turbines have
almost ten percent more output than the previous units. The original turbine manufacturer was Charmilles, a
predecessor of ANDRITZ HYDRO; initial commissioning took place in 1928.
After completion and reconnecting to the grid, the Mwadingusha hydropower plant will provide electric power to
the copper mines in the Katanga region as well as to the public distribution grid of SNEL.
RECORDING BREAKING AUSTRIAN TRADE MISSION TO ACCRA
The Austrian Trade Mission, a biannual event organised by our office and hitherto mainly focused on Nigeria was
held in Accra, Ghana in March, 2017 with a record breaking
participation by Austrian companies. 21 Austrian companies were in

this reason we have decided to make the Austrian Trade Mission to
Ghana an annual event with the next one planned for 22nd to 24th
February, 2018.
AUSTRIAN BUSINESS CIRCLE ACCRA
The Austrian Business Circle, which we inaugurated in Lagos in December, 2015 was brought to Accra for the
first time in May, 2017. The first edition was very successful with a sizeable
number of Ghanaians working with Austrian companies in attendance.
The aim of the Austrian Business Circle in Accra is to bring together
representatives of Austrian companies in Ghana to engage, share experiences,
meet new people and further their professional network. The event will be
running bianually with the second edition of this year planned for November.
All new Ghanaian companies working with Austrian companies are invited to get

MARKETPLACE AUSTRIA FOOD 2017 | 4th OCTOBER IN VIENNA
"Marketplace Austria" offers buyers from all over the world the unique opportunity to meet Austrian suppli-
ers and producers from the food and drinks sector and to find new business
partners.
Organised by ADVANTAGE AUSTRIA, the international cooperation forum is
targeted at buyers for major supermarkets and food and drink importers
from across the globe. The program includes B2B meetings with Austrian
food and drink producers as well as a range of short, informative talks on
Austria's food industry to kick off the Marketplace.
"Marketplace Austria" gives international food and drink buyers the unique opportunity to get to know new
products and meet potential business partners! International guests are provided with free accommodation
(2 nights in a hotel in the centre of Vienna, breakfast included) and an evening dinner. Participants are kindly
asked to register online by 31 August 2017 at the latest.
The international cooperation forum will be held at the Austrian Federal Economic Chamber in Vienna on 4
October 2017.
