During 1857, nearly 16,000 Chinese immigrants landed in the port of Robe, that is in South Australia on a ship called the Koing William 2 and had plans to walk across the South Australian, Victorian border. They wanted to go to the gold fields because lots of gold had been found at that time. They landed in South Australia, to avoid the 10 pound taxes that Victoria was charging immigrants to the state. This group of Chinese immigrants and all the other groups not paying the taxes ere illegal immigrants.

The Chinese walked for days and weeks to get to Victoria and set up camps along the way to give them rest. There were 3 resting spots/inn’s along the way but the immigrants did not want to rest in them because if they were spotted they would be sent to prison!
