Maximising Military Training Outcomes The Australia-Singapore Military Training Initiative (the Initiative) will see the delivery of enhanced military training areas in Central and North Queensland, which will benefit the Australian Defence Force (ADF), provide significant local economic opportunities, and enhance Defence’s bilateral relationship with Singapore. Under the Initiative, Australia and Singapore will jointly develop military training areas – expanding the Shoalwater Bay Training Area and establishing a new training area in North Queensland. Singapore will invest approximately AUD $2 billion to enhance training areas to meet the future needs of the ADF and Singapore Armed Forces (SAF). When the Initiative reaches maturity, up to 14,000 SAF personnel will conduct training in Central and North Queensland over 18 weeks a year for the next 25 years.

Next Generation Training Training is the foundation on which military capability is built and contributes to how we operate seamlessly with allies and partners. The SAF will conduct its own unilateral training and will also participate in bilateral training with the ADF.

Opportunities AheadThe Initiative will set the foundations for the future of ADF and SAF training. The evolving character of conflict and rapid advances in technology is challenging current approaches to training and training area development. The integration of space, cyber and information environments – with the more traditional training environments of land, sea and air – is now required. Next generation training areas must be able to support the use of robotics, autonomous systems, augmented reality and artificial intelligence.

Defence continues to encourage and facilitate open discussions with relevant government, industry and science and technology stakeholders to design and develop technologically advanced training areas and facilities that maximise training outcomes for the ADF and SAF.

Opportunities for Industry Defence is committed to implementing the Initiative to maximise the economic benefits for communities and to provide opportunities for local industries in Central and North Queensland across the life of the Initiative.

There are potential opportunities to build skilled workforces, in and around the Rockhampton and Townsville regions to service and maintain these high end training facilities and infrastructure.
