— become friends —

I have been in the “livestock industry” my entire life – first as a 4-H member, then on a college show team, I spent time buying, selling, and fitting show cattle, worked in cattle production enter-prises, and finally ended up here, publishing the Pacific Showcase magazine. After all this time, and all these experiences, it contin-ues to amaze me how much is going on and how many opportuni-ties are available, for so many people who love this way of life.

You may not have a herd of animals at home or spend your days on the farm, but because you had animals growing up, or your children somehow got “exposed”, and decided showing lambs, hogs, goats, steers, or heifers, was their passion, You Are Involved! And now I am sure many of you cannot imagine spending your days, nights, weekends, holidays, and any moments in between, doing anything else but being in the barn, on the road, or making plans for that next show, sale, event, or project.

We are all very fortunate that there are so many businesses, shows, breeders, and individuals, who want to put on those educa-tional field days, or sales, seminars, or other functions, to give our youth learning opportunities. With families involved in so many activities, it is important to take into consideration scheduling to get the most benefit for both participants and hosts. If there is something else slated for the same date or weekend that will appeal to the same audience, try to work together so they can and will attend both events. There are only so many weekends in a year and while you can’t please everyone all the time, making things more accessible will guarantee more response.

As we move into the Fall season, most of the county and state fairs have been held. Most of your project animals have been sold, and you are beginning to plan what you will raise or purchase for next year’s projects. I have talked about this in the past, but the topic of “Planning” is always important! If you want to succeed and reach the goals you set for yourself, “planning” is the key. Read through our advertisements, contact breeders, research on the internet, work up a budget for expenses and projected income, set your goals, discuss with your family your plans and ideas, and you are on your way! The excitement begins!

The CJLA is also approaching the end of its show year. Now where did THOSE months go to? Talk about flying by! We are working on some fund-raisers and members are selling tickets on two exciting raffles. Check out the ad in this issue for complete details. These are great items and if you would like to purchase tickets, you can talk to any CJLA member or call me directly to get yours. All money raised will go directly back to the CJLA award program. The continuing support of so many people each year is the reason the CJLA is able to give so much back to the members. We hope we can do even more in the future to involve more members in activities other than showing by offering educa-tional contests and other activities. Thank you to everyone who cares about the CJLA!

As you clean up your tack box, sweep out the trailer, and organize your stuff from this past year, be sure to pull out some photos and send them in for our Hot Shot section. If you move, let us know right away so you don’t miss an issue of the magazine, and as always, send us your news, dates, and show results so we can get them listed in an upcoming issue.

Happy Fall!

important CJLa news

I hope you have all had a wonderful summer! In this issue, you will find the updated points for all members in each division. Check out the list below to see which shows have been tabulated for points. Chico’s “Circle of Champions” Lamb, Hog, and Meat Goat results have been included so those divisions have new totals. The Steer and Heifer divisions are the same as last issue. I will be tabulating the rest of the shows that have been held and will email out an updated points list for all species to all CJLA members soon. Points will also be updated on the website as I get them recorded. If you have any questions at all, please give me a call or send an email and I will be happy to go over your points with you. Do not wait until the end of the year as it is much easier for me to check my records and show results immediately rather than in December!! If you have attended more than 8 shows, your top eight shows are included in the total listed here. There are still more shows to be held in all divisions, so you still have the chance to better your totals for the year-end standings

Our NEW CJLA website - www.cjlainfo.com is continually updated so check it out. I enjoy hearing from you, so please continue to email me if you have any questions, concerns, suggestions, ideas, or comments!

As the end of the year draws closer, we are already busy planning for the annual award banquet scheduled for February 2012. In the next few months, we will be sending all members items that will need your atten-tion. It is extremely important that you read through all material sent to you and fill out and return any forms that ask for your input. So be sure to regularly check your emails, inboxes, and mailboxes for CJLA announce-ments, information and news updates.

One more item I would like to remind you about - our award program relies entirely on the generous donations of the many people and businesses that support the CJLA and its members, and your help is needed in order for us to meet our goals. I would like to ask you to please spread the word about the CJLA and your participation in the association, and to ask for donations from those who you think would be interested in supporting the award program. We will have updated sponsor letters and donation forms available soon.

The CJLA is selling tickets on two raffle items to raise more money for the CJLA Award Program. All members have received a packet of tickets to sell and we have more available if anyone needs more or wants to purchase some. Check out the ad in this issue featuring these fund-raisers!

Until next time, keep on showing - and have fun!

ing fill in your smaller stock takes time, and also must be worked on prior to arrival at a show or sale or prior to show day.

Maddi Kerlee and the entire Kerlee family have had tremendous suc-cess in many different arenas throughout the country. They’ll help us look at how to obtain optimum fill in your stock and to know what to look for in order to determine if your livestock is getting too full.

Ideal fill in your show hogs, breeding pigs, sale pigs and market hogs is an art. The Kerlee family has worked hard for many years to know what it takes to achieve that ideal look, and know that it’s not an over-night sensation.

“When it comes to filling up a pig to be ready to show, often times people are looking for a quick fix, and adding volume takes time,” Kerlee said. “When adding fill to a hog, it is best to fill slowly.”

The Kerlee family knows sometimes a little bit of feed at a time can go a long way.

“Offer a pound or two of your prepared ration every few hours prior to exhibiting,” Kerlee said.

Adding products to your pig’s feed before exhibiting will also help gain that fill you’re looking for at a show or sale. The Kerlee fam-ily has had great success with Power Fill and Depth Charge, but acknowledge that whatever feed works best for you, your family and your hogs is always the way to go.

“These products can be fed wet or dry and do a terrific job,” Kerlee said. “Depth Charge works great mixed into your feed as a top dress,

or mixed in as a slop for your hog before they hit the sale block or the show ring.”

Many feed companies offer fill products for your hogs, so it’s important to have pre-pared early at home to know which products work best for you. The west coast is fortunate to have a great selection of feed salesmen throughout the state who are well prepared to help junior showmen with whatever they may need. Get in contact with your feed represen-tative and they can provide many ideas on filling products they may have and you can determine which product will help take you straight to the top.

Filling often, feeding often

The sheep and goat rings can often be different in terms of overall fill than what we are trying to achieve with cattle and hogs.

“Although we do not really want a super ‘filled’ look in sheep and goats, we definitely want them full enough so they don’t appear hollow-shallow,” Kerlee said. “It is important that the chest is higher

with the ideal fill we are looking for in wether sire sheep today.

The Kerlee family uses a vareity of products to gain that desired fill in their market and breeding sheep,

but monitors their feeding closely to ensure that their sheep don't become

too full.

Ou la la … your squeals are just music to my ears, little one!

I am happy to hear that you and your human friend are getting along so well. I remember when I was a youngster like you I did a lot of body building to improve my muscle mass. The role of Sel-Plex® in good muscle recovery is so important. I think your human friends were talking about the rate that muscles recover from aerobic exercise in race horses. That research is from Kentucky, you know. The people at Alltech look at all areas of re-search, from race horses to fertility to gene expressions’ impact on immunity.

In fact, I just heard my human -- Farmer Brown -- talking about four ladies that he met recently; they just finished a huge race in record breaking time. The all women team of 50 year olds just broke two records in the Race Across America. Each member eats foods naturally supplemented with Sel-Plex as part of their training regime, both for the role in immune function and to help recovery after exercise. Can you imagine riding a bike across the USA in less than 7 days at an average speed of 19 mph?

I have some great news to share with you, Piggy. Your Papa and I are expecting again! I know that Farmer Brown is hoping for a big litter. Your papa and I have both been taking our Sel-Plex, it’s in both of our diets to improve fertility, along with my other Alltech ingredients. We always wanted a big family; here on the farm, the more the merrier, and the more babies, the happier we all are. Farmer Brown has been reading about how Sel-Plex can impact the fertility and growth rate of piglets, too. Just changing

the source of selenium can do so much. We don’t have to worry about our immune systems as long as Sel-Plex is in our feed!

I’ll have to tell you about the great conversation that I had with my bovine neighbor yesterday about a product called Bio-Mos® and how it impacts intestinal health. I’m looking forward to learning more tomorrow when I see her at vet day. You will have

to meet her son; I hear he is doing very well competing in jackpot shows. In fact, as you start going to jackpot shows with your human friend, just remember the role that good nutrition plays in keep-ing you healthy and in top shape. You just can’t afford to get sick from all your travels. If you have one day when you are

not at your best, it could make the difference when trying to place at the next show.

Your immune system is something you have to keep working at for peak performance; keeping Sel-Plex in your show ration is so important. You have a great start in life, La’Market. Farmer Brown made sure you had the best starter feed while your papa and I made sure you had the best genetics to start you on your way to keeping up the tradition of taking home “Best in Show.”

Piggy La’Market, keep up the hard work; eat the right food, drink lots of good clean water, read the labels of your feed and keep Sel-Plex in your diet.

I look forward to your next letter,

Your Ma’Ma (and Papa, too)

than the flank and that you keep an eye on and evaluate the fill of your sheep and goats on show day.”

When feeding any animal, sometimes the typical morning and evening feedings are not enough. This can apply both at home, in preparation for a sale or at a show.

“The best way to control and monitor the fill on sheep is to feed sev-eral times a day and observe water intake,” Kerlee said. “You might need to add in a noon feeding or even two other feedings throughout the day, to achieve the ideal look you are working for.”

Pulling the blankets off of the sheep and goats to check for fill is the best way to gauge how they are coming along. In order to achieve the ideal amount of depth and balance you will want portrayed on the profile, you will most likely have to adjust your feeding schedule based on when throughout the day the stock will be exhibited or sold.

No matter what type of stock you are exhibiting, it’s important to al-ways have a schedule. We always prefer to take what time we expect to show and work backwards. You should know how long it will take you to wash, get stock dry, feed and prepared for the show ring or

sale. If a certain animal needs 45 minutes of time to be fed to achieve ideal fill, besides all the other show day work, you will have to budget that into your schedule so that you can achieve the ideal fill at just the right time, and all your hard work will pay off.

No matter how you decide to achieve your fill in your stock, you should always be sure your honesty and integrity aren’t being com-promised. Many shows have rules for the sake of their exhibitors, the livestock and the viewing public. With correct selection, feeding, work leading up to a show, and show day management your livestock can achieve that ideal fill without artificial filling practices. Always remember a good quote my mom used to tell me, “When you wake up in the morning and you look in the mirror, there is only going to be one person staring back at you, so you better like what you see.”

Good luck and knock ‘em dead!

part of showmanship is to show off your goat’s good points and reduce his weak points. Of course we all want a perfect goat to show, but that “perfect one” hasn’t been made yet. I once heard a top wether breeder and judge say in his reasons, “If you want to win showmanship under me bring a structurally incorrect goat and make him look the best you can. Anyone can make the grand champion wether look good.”
