16 Why I Donate Blood

W hen called to provide love and care for the sick-poor in Waco, the Daughters of Charity answered. Their labor of love is still present in our community as Providence continues to provide spiritually centered holistic care, with special attention to those who are poor and vulnerable. And, through Providence’s

partnership with John Wood Ministries, this calling has taken our Providence family beyond our local community….providing care to those most in need in Kiev, Ukraine.

In 1999, the mortality rate in Ukraine for isolated coronary surgery was 11%. Think about 100 people standing in a line….11 people would not make it through the surgery.

Through the training of a dozen surgeons at the Amosov Institute, the largest heart hospital in Ukraine, the technique of off -pump bypass surgery, the number of procedures performed has increased by over 900% and, by 2005, the mortality rate has lowered from 11% to .05%. Now, think about that same 100 people….due to the specialized training the Ukranian surgeons received, the life expectancy of their patients signifi cantly increased.

In addition to the off-pump procedures, Providence physicians have trained Ukraine physicians in laparoscopic procedures and have provided them with resources to increase their level of expertise, enhancing the delivery of healthcare in Ukraine.

Such phenomenal results have not gone un-noticed. When former First Lady Kateryna Yushchenko learned of the medical advances achieved in the cardiac program at Amosov Institute, she attributed such phenomenal results to the excellent training physicians received from their partners in the US. During a medical exchange in 2007, the White House staff, including President Bush and Congressman Chet Edwards, met with the Ukraine physicians, and in January 2010, the Ukrainian Ambassador to the United States, Oleh Shamshur, decorated Dr. John Wood with Order of Merit, Third Degree, for his considerable contribution in the Ukranian-American cooperation in medicine.

Dr. Wood traveled to Washington to accept the award, on behalf of all who have made each medical exchange possible: the doctors and medical professionals who have traveled to carry the message of compassionate, excellent healthcare and who have donated their time to train physicians, host families who have opened their homes year after year, Providence for serving as a training center during their visits, and our very own President and CEO Kent Keahey, who over 10 years ago, had a vision for change in the delivery of healthcare in the Ukraine.

The Medical Exchange Program began over a Chinese lunch shared between Mr. Keahey and Dr. Wood— two visionaries with a mission-minded dream to provide compassionate, excellent care to those most in need. Following the fall of the Soviet Union, Dr. John Wood, former pastor of First Baptist Church and President of John Wood ministries, Inc., and the International Medical Education Foundation, Inc., answered a call to take the gospel to Ukraine. In 1992, Dr. Wood began ministering in Ukraine…making the trip every other month to distribute Bibles, Christian literature and build churches. Mr. Keahey learned of his ministry in Ukraine, and expressed interest to Dr. Wood for Providence to be their partner.

2 • The Spirit of Providence

Before you know it, local schools will be re-opening and the summer of 2011 will be history. During these

summer months we’ve been very busy with a successful Joint Commission survey and the on-going

construction of two major projects on our health center campus. In addition, we’ve welcomed over

50 junior volunteers—local high school students who have served in nearly 30 service lines throughout our ministry. Many of these junior

volunteers represent the future of healthcare—and Providence is privileged to assist them in their early career experiences!

Along with an early summer came a couple of noteworthy personnel changes in our ministry—these are documented more fully in the

Administration Spotlights on page 3 of this issue; however, I would like to personally recognize Jana Whitaker as our new vice president

of marketing. Jana has been director of our marketing department since February of ’10 and joined Providence from the American Cancer

Society where she served in corporate relations and as executive director for 14 years. And, I want to congratulate Jonathan Ford upon

his graduation from Aquinas Institute of Theology this past May. In Jonathan’s new role as vice president of workplace spirituality and

leadership formation he is working very closely with our associates, volunteers, physicians and boards . . .anchoring our work to directly

refl ect our mission statement and core values.

As we look more closely to the months ahead, we’ll wrap up both of our construction projects. Very soon, our main entrance to the

health center will re-open with additional foyer space as well as new sidewalk-style seating for those enjoying the goodies served by

ToGo’s. On the opposite side of our entrance, we’ll open a new waiting room for our Women & Newborns Center—featuring an express

elevator designed just for expectant moms and their loved ones. When this portion of the project is completed, over 700 square feet of our

1st fl oor will be renovated and we will have added an additional 2,081 square feet in space near the main entrance.

In October, the shelled space on the 4th fl oor of our F.M. and Gloria Young Tower will offi cially become our 4-East nursing unit. The

addition of this 30-bed unit will increase our capacity and help us meet the growing demands of acute care in Waco. And, as we approach

the winter months of 2012, we’ll celebrate in the new year with the offi cial opening of our Women & Newborns Center on the 5th fl oor.

Upon completion, this expansion project will have increased our space on the 5th fl oor by approximately 4,348 square feet . . .and, will have

resulted in the complete renovation of every patient room on the 5th fl oor and the addition of a new nursery.

Construction, though, will not hinder our on-going Kiev Medical Exchange! In the fall, Dr. John Wood will be bringing another

cohort of parliament members, physicians, and executives to visit Providence Healthcare Network. We look forward to this visit . . .and I

encourage you to read more about the history of our Keiv Medical Exchange program and the recent international recognition of Dr. Wood

on the cover and pages 6 and 7 of this issue. The opportunities we’ve shared over the years with the Kiev team have been countless—both

here at home and abroad in foreign missions.

It’s opportunities like these that inspire trust through personal leadership . . .and that’s exactly what our core value of integrity is all

about. As your President & CEO, I’m delighted to serve God alongside you and I look forward to what the future holds for our ministry,

Hometown: As a Baptist preacher’s kid, you move around a lot! I was born while my dad pastored First Baptist Chilton . . .and his ministry took us to Moody and East Waco—where I grew up. Today, I count my hometown as Gatesville—an old, blue house at the intersection of Bridge & Fennimore Streets we fondly call home.

Education: I attended public schools in the La Vega and Moody districts before securing my Bachelor of Science at Baylor University in 1980. Later in my career, I went back to Baylor for a Master of Business Administration; and, just this past month I graduated from Aquinas Institute of Theology with a Master of Art in Health Care Mission.

Family: My best friend, Deborah, and I celebrated our 27th wedding anniversary this past month. Together we share in the joy of three kids: Mary Alice (19); Grace Kathryn (18); and, Christian Daiel (17).

When did you come to work for Providence and what are your responsibilities presently?

I joined the ministry at Providence in August of 1997 and served in the capacity of marketing, volunteer services & public relations for almost fourteen years. Recently, I transitioned into the role of vice president for workplace spirituality & leadership formation! In the new role, I work closely with our associates, volunteers, physicians and boards to securely tie our actions back to our mission statement and our six core values.

What do you enjoy most about working here?

My greatest pleasure and fulfillment comes from working with the people of Providence Healthcare Network.

What drew you to healthcare?

A change of focus and careers drew me to healthcare back in 1989 . . .when my adopted dad hired me to market healthcare education products to medical, nursing and paramedic schools in Ohio, Illinois, Indiana and Vermont.

If you had not gone into healthcare, what would you have done?

As a student at Baylor, I worked part time in youth ministry at Westwood Baptist Church (about six blocks from Providence Health Center). Later, I was licensed and ordained into the ministry by Trinity Baptist Church in Gatesville, Texas. When friends ask me when I’m going back into the ministry . . .I simply remind them that, at Providence, I already have!

Considering that you have seen a myriad of changes in healthcare over your career, from your perspective, what has been the most significant change?

On the global platform I would have to say healthcare reform is the most significant change I’ve seen during my career. When I localize the question, though, the most significant change has been in our growth as a ministry—when I got here back in ’97, we had around 1,000 associates . . .and today, we are Waco’s largest employer!

Obviously, you spend a lot of your time at Providence. What are your interests outside of Providence?

My wife and family are my primary interests outside of Providence—I love spending time cooking with Deborah and having those rare moments when all of the family actually sits down for a meal together—that puts a big smile on my face!

Finally, what is one thing about you that most people would not know that you would be willing to share?

Most people would not know that my family and I love to use movie quotes when we’re in random conversations together! Some of our favorites come from Fletch, Steel Magnolias, Father of the Bride, Romancing the Stone, and, of course, White Christmas!

Hometown: Waco, Texas

Education: Bachelor of Business Administration, marketing, Texas A&M University.

Family: Husband, Hal and children, Adam—co-owner Sam’s on the Square, Waco and Taylor—senior at Texas A&M University. Parents—Bob and Deborah Abernathy of Waco and JoEllen Swain of Jackson, Miss.; Brothers—Greg Swain of Waco and Lance Abernathy, wife Jennifer and daughter Kate of Houston and Jimmy Duckworth of Jackson, Miss. Pets—cocker spaniels: Sam and Kobe and Purr the cat.

When did you come to Providence and what are your responsibilities presently?

I started February 8, 2010 as director of marketing working under the leadership of Jonathan Ford. In March 2011, I transitioned into my current role as vice president of marketing and have the privilege to work with our fabulous marketing team as well as our wonderful volunteer services family. My responsibilities, along with my team, include marketing all of our departments and clinics both internally and externally along with coordinating all external advertising and sponsorship activities for our ministry. I also manage our external website—www.providence.net.

What do you think you’ll enjoy most about working here?

I am 100% a team player and LOVE the team spirit/atmosphere here at Providence. It’s exciting to have a role where I can interact and support so many of our associates on a daily basis. I’m excited to be a part of a dynamic, welcoming and positive environment. I look forward to being a part of the future of our ever-growing ministry.

What drew you to health care?

I worked in the non-profit field for 15 years before coming to the Providence family so continuing in the non-profit world was very attractive to me. I have worked as a community partner with Providence for several years and have watched several things from afar that made this a great fit for me. The people, the leadership, the community involvement and the continued growth/opportunities were just a few things that appealed to me. I also love that every day we are making a difference in people’s lives as we care for our patients and their families.

ALWAYS, ALWAYS, ALWAYS

World Famous

4 • The Spirit of Providence

by Erin Rogers, marketing project manager

School days are coming…calling up different emotions! Some parents rejoicing that the kids are back in school, some kids hating the idea of getting up early and not missing

the bus.

For some of us, we might feel a bit of nostalgia. Going back to school meant new books, new plaid skirts and penny loafers. Also,

the fresh smell of the cool autumn breezes off the lake (south side of Chicago) and the crunch of colorful leaves under your feet.

But no matter what the memories are for all of us, the idea of back to school is the same—something new. So whether it’s new clothes, new crayons or new teachers, it’s all about new.

So for us at Providence, it’s also about new—new construction, new associates, (check out the orientation list) new ways of doing things—and it happens all the time.

Like Value Based Purchasing! You have had the workshop on it and we all have to admit that it is a new way of getting paid! Something we have to get used to.

In the old days you could get paid for what you do—but now it’s not only that but how well did we do it, what was patient’s experience—how satisfi ed were they, did we “make their day”—and did we ALWAYS do that! So it’s a brand new world, a new learning experience which can be scary or it can be exciting!

But really, I don’t think it’s so new—our mission calls us to continue the loving ministry of Jesus as Healer—to serve each person as we would serve the Lord Himself and I guess we could add the word ALWAYS!

See you around,

Sister C

It’s a bird…a plane….a FISH?? At the World Famous Pike Place Fish Market in Seattle, Washington, it isn’t uncommon to

see whole fi sh fl ying through the air. In fact, this is just one of the ways the fi shmongers of the market help create excellent experiences for their customers…living up to the “world famous” in their name. So, what does it mean to be world famous? For the fi shmongers of Pike Place Fish Market, it means going beyond just providing outstanding service to people. “It means really being present with people and relating to them as human beings, discovering ways to make a person’s day.” That sounds right in line with the 4 facets of our FISH! Philosophy: choose your attitude, play, make their day and be there. And it should! Because the World Famous Pike Place Fish Market is the birthplace of the FISH! Philosophy that we adopted 8 years ago! And, they are continuing to make a difference to everyone who visits, including one of our very own.

In route to a summer vacation in Alaska, Patty Hawk, director of volunteer services, stopped by the fi sh market and was able to see fi rst-hand how the fi shmongers work together to make a difference each and every day:

“One of the true highlights of our vacation was visiting the Pike Place Fish Market where the FISH! Philosophy began!! I recognized one of the guys from the FISH! Philosophy video…I walked right up to him and asked if I could have a photo with him. I then told him that our hospital had adopted the FISH! Philosophy over 8 years ago and that it had become a dedicated part of our culture here at Providence! He said, ‘That’s it—you’re going up to the top!!’ He then led me to the top (where they catch the fi sh being thrown from below!) and yelled at the guys, ‘Gather around…we’re making a difference at the hospital where she works!’ They all started clapping and did a group hug before my husband got our photo! We LOVED Alaska, but this was my favorite, most fun and fabulous experience!!”

Obviously, you will spend a lot of your

time at Providence. What are your

interests outside of Providence?

As empty nesters, my husband and I love

to be a part of our family and kids’ lives

as much as we can and as often as we

can, slow them down in their busy lives.

We also spend a lot of time with our

group of friends that have been

together for 20+ years. A favorite

pastime is to ride around on golf

carts on the golf course right before

sundown mid-week to spend quality

time together and break up the week.

Finally, what is one thing about you that

most people would not know that you

would be willing to share?

I can yodel!!

Symphony in Full Swing

As promised in our last issue, we will continue to share some of the most frequently asked questions, as well ashighlight the most recent policy changes related to Symphony. Two of the fi rst changes we will see include:

◗ Effective Thursday, August 4, 2011- All paychecks will be mailed and no paychecks will be picked-up in payroll or at Providence Park.

◗ Effe ctive January 3, 2012- All associates will be required to convert to direct deposit. We will work with associates who need assistance with opening bank accounts.

Here are more FAQ’s and answers you might fi nd helpful as we move forward in this process together.

Q. Who has been involved in designing Symphony?

A. During the past year, Ascension Health has assembled a core team of 470 people, most of them located in St. Louis, who have worked on the design of Symphony. The core team collaborates with more than 500 leaders and associates from all of the health ministries who were selected for their expertise in specifi c areas. Those ministry leaders include three leaders from Providence: Karen Richardson, chief fi nancial offi cer; Geoff Nielsen, supply chain director; Chuck Sivess, human resources vice president; and President and CEO Kent Keahey, who serves on Symphony’s steering committee.

Q. Does Symphony mean changes in our patient-care practices, as well as business practices?

A. Yes. One of the most important benefi ts of the Symphony initiative is that it will provide us with critical data related to clinical outcomes and patient safety. Easier access to information will help us make better decisions, identify best practices we can adopt from other ministries, and drive improvements in patient care. The information generated through Symphony should help us to perform even better that we already do.

Q: Which health ministries are the alpha and beta sites for Symphony implementation?

A: One of the most signifi cant accomplishments of Symphony’s design phase was the selection of alpha and beta sites. These health ministries have been chosen as the fi rst sites to implement the Symphony program:

◗ Sacred Heart Health System in Pensacola, Fla., will be Symphony’s alpha site.

◗ Saint Thomas Health in Nashville, Tenn., and Providence Hospital in Mobile, Ala., will serve as Symphony’s beta sites.

Q. What’s the most important thing that associates should keep in mind as we implement the Symphony solution?

A. Associates should maintain a positive attitude through the change in business processes and change in culture. Through this important transition, we’ve found inspiration in a quote from pioneering American physician, psychoanalyst and writer John C. Lilly: “Our only security is our ability to change.”

Making Each Patient Experience an Excellent Oneby Chuck Sivess, vice president of human resources

The Patient Experience goes beyond just quality care. Our team at Providence Health Center provides excellent physical care to our patients, we just need to realize that we must also care for the emotional and spiritual needs of our patients and their

family and friends. Many times, when a patient or family member has a complaint, it is not about the quality of care they are receiving-- it is that we have not communicated suffi cient information to them. Excellent care starts with physically caring for the patient, and must also include explaining why we are poking and prodding them. We must empower them to be a part of their care process. The 3rd fl oor is installing large dry eraser boards in all of the patient rooms. These boards contain critical information such as pulse, blood pressure, and many other vital signs that are important for a patient and their family to know. A large blank space was also included on the board. When the patient arrives in the room, the nurses ask the patient, “What does excellent care mean to you?” The nurse then asks the patient to identify three things that would help make their experience in our hospital is an excellent one. This empowers the patient to be involved in their care and gives caregivers insight to the expectations of their patients. By engaging our patients with their vision of excellent care, we will increase their satisfaction, positively impacting their entire Providence experience.

This is just one example of the many initiatives that the Providence Experience Team is working on to increase patient satisfaction…and, our teams across the network are continuously working together to ensure that each patient’s experience is an excellent one!

Announcing Providence Health Center’s High Performers inPatient Satisfaction

Providence is proud to announce the top performers in providing exceptional care and experiences for our patients, families and visitors at Providence!

The 5th Floor, recipient of the “Faces of Excellence” award and 4 North, recipients of the “Drivers of Excellence” award have consistently met specifi c patient satisfaction goals. The commitment and dedication exhibited by these units refl ect their continuous drive to offer he highest level of care and service to all patients, families and visitors.

4 North: “Drivers of Excellence”

5th Floor: “Faces of Excellence”

“This is so exciting and we are honored to be recognized as the “Face of Excellence” this quarter. The 5th fl oor staff and physicians work very hard to assure our patient’s experience here at PHC is exceptional. I am very proud.” Donna Robinson, director of labor & delivery and GI lab.

Making Each Patient Experience an Excellent One...continued on page 12

6 • The Spirit of Providence

In 1997, Dr. Wood brought the fi rst delegation of physicians to the US. Host family Bob and Fran Neill were among the many local families who opened their homes to the physicians and have since traveled with Dr. Wood on other mission trips as well.

“We wanted to give back what we have been blessed with….many people can’t understand why we do this instead of cruises, etc. But if they went, had the opportunity to meet the people we do, share with them and learn with them….they might understand,” Bob said.

In 1999, a group of physicians, medical professionals, and support team, representing several specialties, gathered medical supplies and traveled into Eastern Europe to share our message of compassionate, excellent healthcare. (see the box below for a full list of participants and the specialties represented in the 1999 visit to Ukraine). Matched with corresponding specialties, the medical teams worked side-by-side with the Ukraine physicians, demonstrating new techniques.

“It is rewarding to know that physicians in the Ukraine have the life-saving procedures such as off-pump bypass available to benefi t their cardiac patients,” Dr. Bill Peper, said.

Judy Taylor, R.N., surgery, recalls the great sense of gratitude both the physicians and patients expressed. “You realize you are really helping people, you feel them, you feel their thanks….it is just beyond words. I defi nitely came back changed,” she said.

Since 1999, our relationship with the Kiev medical community continues to grow. Over 3,500 pounds of medical supplies have been donated, and Ukraine physicians have traveled back to the United States fi ve times. And during their visit in 2009, videoconferencing technology was established…connecting the Providence board room to the headquarters in Kiev.

Preparations are underway for Kiev physicians to make another visit to the States this fall. Karen and Dr. Johnny Howton have also hosted physicians over the years and Karen works with Dr. Wood as well as with local community members to arrange meals and entertainment: from day trips to the state capital and shopping, to a barge party on the lake or a night at the HOT Fair and Rodeo, the physicians also take back a little taste of Texas.

Sylvia Ferrill, R.N., DePaul Center, who was designated medical coordinator for the exchange program, worked diligently to recruit physicians for the 1999 trip, and continues to engage local physician involvement each time they visit. Once secured, she makes arrangements with assigning physicians to their host families and ensuring that they match up with the assigned doctor in their specialty.

While access to advanced technology in Ukraine may be limited, the physician’s desire and passion to help and heal, are boundless. Access to collaboration with experts in their fi elds provides invaluable knowledge to the Ukraine physicians—allowing them to enhance the level of quality medical care. Please see page 7 for a list of the physicians who have generously donated their time in providing face-to-face expert training to Ukraine physicians.

Such passion and desire for knowledge drives physicians to make the trip…often times at great personal fi nancial sacrifi ce to themselves or their families.

“One physician sold his car, another had fi ve family members contribute money to purchase an airplane ticket. And because of the community partners throughout Waco—providing meals, homes, and entertainment, everything else is taken care of. When they come….they bring the hope of their entire medical community,” Karen recalled.

And while the standard of healthcare still falls behind standards in the United State in most instances, the results of the program have been phenomenal. The nearly 200 physicians trained will continue serving the healthcare needs of their community and sharing their new-found knowledge with coworkers for many years to come. Think about that multiplication factor…it’s amazing!

The Story Continues...

“I didn’t know right then what that meant…I was thinking about spiritual ministry, and here he was, with an amazing vision of a medical ministry combined with spiritual ministry—I was amazed,” Dr. Wood said.

The exchange trip – travel to Kiev was

a fantastic experience. The opportunity to

“Traveling to Ukraine was such a phenomenal experience and I have such fond memories. It is very fulfi lling to work with the exchange teams, matching the physicians with local specialists each time they visit. They are talented physicians and put the many things they learn into practice, benefi ting their medical community and patients.” Sylvia Ferrill, R.N., DePaul Center

“It’s exciting to be a part of a new developing system in a foreign country, knowing that it is improving the quality of care for patients living there. I have also been impressed with the level of dedication the Ukrainian physicians have placed on research. They strive to provide better care for their patients by making sure that they have received as much training as possible. Every chance they can be trained—they grab it. It has encouraged me to not take for granted all of the opportunities that I have available here living in the United States. Working with these physicians has given me a greater appreciation for the access and equipment we have here in America.” Johnny Howton, M.D.

As Central Texans, we have all witnessed what philanthropy has done and can do to impact and improve lives. It is a very special part of our community’s identity; we go above and beyond to serve others with our time, talent and treasure. Providence is honored to have been called by God to serve others by reducing suffering and positively impacting lives in the Greater Waco area for over 106 years. We would not have been able to do this if it weren’t for the incredible employees that carry out our mission of serving quality, comprehensive healthcare services to all patients, with particular attention to the sick, poor and vulnerable.

Our associates are vital components of Providence’s identity. Not only do they serve patients with their time and talent each and every day at Providence, but they go above and beyond the “call of duty” to serve those in need with their treasure as well. Each year, the Providence Foundation conducts the Hands in Giving Associate Campaign. During this campaign, we give our associates the opportunity to support Providence with their philanthropic gifts. We are proud to report that each year, Providence associates have faithfully increased their giving and, in 2011, they have continued their passion for going “above and beyond!” This year’s campaign has resulted in a record breaking increase over the goalof $230,000…

Providence Associates Gave an Incredible $236,440! Thank you to all who participated in the Hands in Giving campaign. Your purpose-driven gifts are crucial, and they truly enable Providence to deliver a mission of compassion and a vision of excellence to our community. Over 53% of associates faithfully supported the 2011 campaign. The number of associate Founders’ Society members stayed strong at 64 associates. Because of their generous gifts of $1,000 or more, theseassociates will be recognized on our DonorWall and be invited to Founders Society appreciation events, such as Oktoberfest andthe Food and Wine Experience.

Providence Foundation Awards Grants for New Technology

Providence Foundation Board President Terry Stevens and Board Member Johnny Mankin present Bob Buck, vice president of clinical and support services and Bettye Myers, clinical manager of surgical services, a check for $21,600.62 for the purchase of an Olympus Video Gastroscope. The Comprehensive Bariatric Center at Providence has been designated as a Center of Excellence. Recognizing this distinction, patients from all over Central Texas come to Providence seeking surgical weight loss solutions. The gastroscope will provide Providence bariatric surgeons better visualization during stomach reduction procedures, thus lowering the risk of complications to our patients. The gastroscope may also be used as a diagnostic toolin procedures such as the esophagogastroduodenoscopy.

Providence Foundation Board President Terry Stevens and Board Member Bill Schroeder present Bettye Myers, clinical manager of surgical services and Bob Buck, vice president of clinical and support services, with a check for $20,884.20, for the purchase of an Olympus Gyrus PK-SP Generator. When laser surgery is not an option Providence urologists will use this new technology to treat prostate tissue and bladder. The Gyrus PK-SP Generator has an electrode designed to achieve a hemostatic resection with minimal tissue trauma. With less tissue trauma, patients would heal much more quickly and their catheters could be removed earlier.

Providence Foundation Board President Terry Stevens and Board Member John Sheehy present Charles Goodwin, director of respiratory services and Bob Buck, vice president of clinical and support services a check for $18,850.00, for the purchase of a Smartvest Airway Clearance Devise. The Smartvest Airway Clearance Devise uses high frequency chest wall oscillation to deliver vigorous, yet comfortable airway clearance treatment for Providence patients battling the consequences of retained lung secretions caused by conditions such as COPD, or cystic fi brosis. The Smartvest has been clinically proven to rid lungs of excess mucus secretions and improve and reduce infections. With this new technology, Providence respiratory therapists can perform better therapy, allowing our patients to recover more quickly and return home sooner.

Providence Foundation President Terry Stevens and Board Member Gloria Young present Gwen Housman, director of rehabilitative services and Michael Olmsted, vice president of long term care with a check for $6,896.00 for the purchase of a set of Midland Electric Parallel Bars. Parallel bars are used in our Providence Park Rehabilitative Services Department to assist patients who have balance issues or muscle weaknesses during the initial phases of gait training. The parallel bars facilitate improved posture and reduce complete weight bearing. They also aid in the coordination of lower extremity movement. The bars allow our physical therapists to be more aggressive in training without diminishing safety. The new bars will allow for safe and easy height adjustment while the patient is within the bars, and the longer length will increase quality training.

Providence Foundation Board President Terry Stevens and Board Member Brian Bivona present Donna Robinson, director of the women and newborns center and Bob Buck, vice president of clinical and support services, a check for $6,209.00, for the purchase of a Bilicheck Non-InvasiveBilirubin Analyzer. Up to 60% of the 3.5 million babies born in the United States each year will develop jaundice—the breaking down of excess red blood cells that release a chemical called bilirubin into the blood stream. A high level of bilirubin can lead to brain damage, causing hearing loss, cerebal palsy, or even death. Currently, the only way to test bilirubin levels is through blood analysis, which subjects newborns to a painful and invasive heel stick. The Bilicheck Non-Invasive Bilirubin Analyzer will allow Providence OB physicians to more quickly determine bilirubin levels by simply scanning the newborn’s head and stomach. Furthermore, by obtaining faster test results, there will be fewer delays in starting treatment, which means newborns could go home sooner.

The Providence Foundation works diligently to help Providence carry out our mission and vision of compassionate, excellent healthcare by raising funds that support the medical and healthcare services provided by our ministry. Since 1992, the Providence Foundation has funded about$6 million to Providence through a total of 233 grants; and, this spring, the Providence Foundation awarded 5 grants, totaling $74,439.82 to be

used for new technology that will enhance the quality of excellent patient care, resulting in better outcomes.

“The success the Foundation has enjoyed over the years stems from our wonderful donors. It’s because of them that we are able to present some pretty big, “big checks” to some of our Providence departments,” Foundation Board President Terry Stevens, said.

12 • The Spirit of Providence12 • The Spirit of Providence

by Deacon Greg George

“Whooo are you, who hoo, who hoo? I really want to know. Whooo are you?” These may be familiar lyrics

to you. They’re from a popular TV show and also from a song by, you guessed it, “The Who”, at least I

think that’s the group’s name.

In the above reading from 1 Peter, Peter is building up his community by affi rming them of their

identity, which included them in this new church founded by Christ and which St. Paul called the Body of

Christ. The people Peter is addressing are from all walks of life; women and men, poor and needy. They

were middle class much like us; healthcare workers and volunteers; employed, unemployed and under

employed. Some of them are confi dent as to whom they are and some are not. They were a very diverse

group and so are we, the people of God today. Yet, many of us may not fully realize “Who we are.”

I venture to say that if most of us were asked the question, “Who are you?” we would respond with

a title of what we do, rather than with an understanding of our essence. For example, I’m a CNA. I’m

a nurse. I’m a physician. I’m a facilities worker or a nutrition worker, or an environmental worker, or a

business staff worker, and so on. Do you get what I’m saying? Certainly, part of “who we are,” is what

we do, but our essence is as much, if not more, about our being as it is about doing.

You see, God knows our essence. He knows who we are. He created us. The bible tells us that He

formed us in our mother’s womb. He carved us in the palm of His hand. He calls us by name. He counts

every hair on our heads. There is nothing that we can be or do that escapes God. However, when WE

truly know who we are in God’s eyes, then we can better accept our own humanness with all its glitter

and all its fl aws and become more aware of the loveliness of our being. Then we can respond with the

appropriate doing. God loves us and meets us at the heart of our essence.

In the Gospels, Jesus seems to have a good understanding of His being. He aptly and variously often

describes His being, depending on the lesson He is teaching and the model He is living. These are called

the “I Am” statements, for example, “I am the Good Shepherd; I am the Bread of Life; I am the Light of the

world; I am the Resurrection and the Life; I am the true vine; I am the Way and the Truth and the Life.” These

are powerful statements of a person who knows and is confi dent who He is and is comfortable and

pleased with His being.

Well what does this mean for us? It means that we are God’s children, His daughters and sons,

made holy (H O L Y) and wholly (W H O L L Y) in God’s image and likeness. It means that we have

been chosen from the very beginning of time to be His people and as a result of this “chosen-ness” we

share in the same priestly nature of Christ, to offer ourselves daily in spiritual sacrifi ces to God, through

our prayers and our works, in our joys and in our sufferings. We are called to be preachers and teachers

of the Good News of the Resurrection by our being and in our doing. We are called to be servants to one

another, as was the early church; to be and do all of this by our holiness of life.

However, who we are is God’s doing. It is a result of God’s invitation and gift. So, today is a good day

to take a personal inventory of “who you are” in the eyes of God for He made you His own image and

likeness. “You are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people of His own…once you were no people

but now you are God’s people.”

“You are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people of His own…Once you were no people, but now you are God’s people.” (1 Peter 2: 9-10)

Making Each Patient Experiencean Excellent One

We are grateful for the 5th Floor’s

and 4 North’s commitment to

excellence, and for all of our talented

teams throughout the Providence

ministry who are committed to

providing exceptional patient care

each and every day.

Hear what our patients are saying about

their Excellent Experience:

“I am so grateful to the attentive (5th

fl oor) nursing staff, especially those in the

nursery. One nurse noticed that my baby’s

nostrils were fl aring soon after birth and

caught that he wasn’t getting enough oxygen.

Their care during the diffi cult four days he

had to stay in the nursery was so comforting.

I am so thankful for their attentiveness, care,

compassion and friendliness!”

“(4 North associates) went above and

beyond for whatever I needed. They made

me feel like they really cared about me.

They made my stay very enjoyable.”

Congratulations Sarah Pyleon your Recent Retirement!

After 11 years of service to the Providence ministry, Sarah Pyle, R.N., quality

management, retired in June. Sarah began her career at Providence as a

day supervisor at St. Catherine Center, and then moved into her role as a

Style Show Announcement – Save the Date!Save the Date! The next Style Show is February 24, 2012 at the Extraco Exhibits and Creative Arts Buildings.

We are pleased to share with you two exciting changes to Providence’s annual fundraising events. The Fall Style Show hosted by Providence Volunteer Services has grown tremendously over the past 21 years, and while its success has been remarkable, it has required a tremendous commitment on the part of our Volunteer Services Director and her team of volunteers. In order to continue this extremely successful event and for it to grow in the future, the Providence Foundation will assume responsibility for the Style show beginning in Spring 2012. The Providence Foundation staff and Development Committee will provide leadership and direction, but with active involvement from the Volunteer Director and other volunteers who have worked with the Style Show in previous years. To further strengthen this event, the Providence Foundation will seek active involvement from the Providence Foundation Forum members.

The Providence Foundation has hosted an annual Casino Party each Spring since 1996 and a Fall Golf Tournament each Fall since 1999. Because the Golf Tournament will continue to be held in the Fall, the Style Show will now be held each Spring and will replace the Casino Party.

“I know that so many people are afraid to donate so I feel that my donation is important to save the lives of others. It was also important knowing that someone within our workforce was in need of donations. I could only hope that if I were in need so many people would rally together for the common cause!”

Tammy Tillery, R.N., director of education

“The recovery process after my last surgery (2007) was long and diffi cult. There were times I was not sure I would ever be able to do many things I had previously taken for granted. I was so happy to be able to donate blood at the June drive. I have tried in the past but my counts were not high enough to be able to donate. The fact my donation helped a fellow associate facing a similar circumstance was a tremendous blessing. ”

Jennifer Jenkins, R.N., stroke coordinator

“Simply put, I give blood to help save lives. As a nurse, I see the need and I feel it’s my duty to give back whenever possible.”

During our June blood drive, our Providence family responded to a need for blood on behalf of Cath Lab Associate Chris Arnold. A record 69 people participated in the drive, and Carter BloodCare collected 44 whole blood units and 4 double red units! Because of your donations, Chris will receive 45 credits towards blood products…and lives will be saved. Thank you to each and every one of you who chose to donate blood, and touched lives!
