A LETTER FROM CARDINAL DOLAN

REGARDING NEXT WEEK’S SECOND COLLECTION

FOR THE CHURCH IN LATIN AMERICA AND THE CARIBBEAN

Dear friends in the Lord, This year, we celebrate the important milestone of 50 years of solidarity with the Church in Latin America and the Caribbean. The Church there faces many challenges, including a lack of access to the resources that the faithful need to nourish their spiritual lives. Often, there are too few priests to meet the needs of the many communities they serve or the communities themselves are simply too isolated to have access to other important resources for the faith. Strategies to train and support evangelization leaders are vital to reach those who are disconnected from the life and mission of the Church. For the past 50 years, the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, through its subcommittee on the Church in Latin America has helped 25 countries in Central and South America, as well as the Caribbean, to confront challenges to the faith. With your assistance and the support of all the Catholic faithful, we have helped to develop evangelization and catechetical programs. We have also funded activities that promote an encounter with Jesus Christ so that the faithful can become missionary disciples. For example, in the Diocese of Garzon, Colombia, the Parish of Our Lady of Guadalupe is blessed with a large community; however, there are only a few priests to address its many needs. Through a grant from the collection for the Church in Latin America, the pastor was able to train pastoral and evangelization leaders for the parish community. These leaders participated in formation on leadership and teaching catechesis, as well as in spiritual retreats, so that they could reach out to the larger community. The parish also created “Catholic Faith” kits to aid in evangelization and teaching catechesis to those in the community. Through this project, the parish was able to achieve its goal of creating an evangelization program to reach the 3,700 families of the parish. Please be generous in this collection, and take this opportunity to share your faith with families in Latin America and the Caribbean. Your support will truly make a difference. With prayerful best wishes, I am, Faithfully in Christ, Timothy Michael Cardinal Dolan Archbishop of New York

HIS WORD TODAY By Rev. William J. Reilly

(bulletin contributor)

“Jesus said to his disciples” “Do not be afraid, little flock, for your Father is pleased to give you the kingdom. Sell your belongings and give alms. Provide money bags for yourselves that do not wear out, an inexhaustible treasure in heaven, that no thief nor moth can destroy…Much will be required of the person entrusted with much, and still more will be demanded of the person entrusted with more.”

Think for a moment of the many times in the scriptures it says not to be afraid. We find this advice in the Old Testament. We hear these words again when Gabriel spoke to Mary, Joseph was advised in a dream, and when Peter and his friends were adrift of the sea.

Fear is a very human emotion and response. I can ask myself of what I am afraid?

A child might be afraid of the dark. An adult fears losing his job, family problems or poor health. Many fear death. Jesus offers a remedy we can follow, if we are one with Him. In the long run, we need only be afraid of losing God’s friendship, and each person has the power to make sure that does not happen.

Peter asked to whom the parable was directed. I know the answer.

DATA BASE UPKEEP Do you notice that your 30 year old married child who lives in Texas is still on our birthday list? That means our database needs to be updated! If you have had any family changes, or if you have not yet registered in our parish, please call the office at 635-1700 x 13.
