The same night Jacob got up and took his two wives, his two maids, and hiseleven children, and crossed the ford of the Jabbok. He took them and sent themacross the stream, and likewise everything that he had. Jacob was left alone; and aman wrestled with him until daybreak. When the man saw that he did not prevailagainst Jacob, he struck him on the hip socket; and Jacob's hip was put out of jointas he wrestled with him. Then he said, "Let me go, for the day is breaking." ButJacob said, "I will not let you go, unless you bless me." So he said to him, "Whatis your name?" And he said, "Jacob." Then the man said, "You shall no longer becalled Jacob, but Israel, for you have striven with God and with humans, and haveprevailed." Then Jacob asked him, "Please tell me your name." But he said, "Why

is it that you ask my name?" And there he blessed him. So Jacob called the placePeniel, saying, "For I have seen God face to face, and yet my life is preserved."The sun rose upon him as he passed Penuel, limping because of his hip.

    Exaudi, Domine Psalm 17:1-7,16

Hear my plea of innocence, O LORD;give heed to my cry; *

listen to my prayer, which does not come from lying lips.

Let my vindication come forth from your presence; *let your eyes be fixed on justice.

Weigh my heart, summon me by night, *melt me down; you will find no impurity in me.

I give no offense with my mouth as others do; *I have heeded the words of your lips.

My footsteps hold fast to the ways of your law; *in your paths my feet shall not stumble.

I call upon you, O God, for you will answer me; *incline your ear to me and hear my words.

Show me your marvelous loving-kindness, *O Savior of those who take refuge at your right handfrom those who rise up against them.

But at my vindication I shall see your face; *when I awake, I shall be satisfied, beholdingyour likeness.

I am speaking the truth in ChristI am not lying; my conscience confirms it bythe Holy SpiritI have great sorrow and unceasing anguish in my heart. For Icould wish that I myself were accursed and cut off from Christ for the sake of myown people, my kindred according to the flesh. They are Israelites, and to thembelong the adoption, the glory, the covenants, the giving of the law, the worship, and the promises; to them belong the patriarchs, and from them, according to the

Jesus withdrew in a boat to a deserted place by himself. But when the crowdsheard it, they followed him on foot from the towns. When he went ashore, hesaw a great crowd; and he had compassion for them and cured their sick. Whenit was evening, the disciples came to him and said, "This is a deserted place, and the hour is now late; send the crowds away so that they may go into thevillages and buy food for themselves." Jesus said to them, "They need not goaway; you give them something to eat." They replied, "We have nothing herebut five loaves and two fish." And he said, "Bring them here to me." Then heordered the crowds to sit down on the grass. Taking the five loaves and the twofish, he looked up to heaven, and blessed and broke the loaves, and gave themto the disciples, and the disciples gave them to the crowds. And all ate and werefilled; and they took up what was left over of the broken pieces, twelve basketsfull. And those who ate were about five thousand men, besides women andchildren.

All: Holy, Holy, Holy Lord, God of power and might,

heaven and earth are full of your glory.

    Hosanna in the highest.

Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord.

Hosanna in the highest.(stand or kneel)

Presider: Blessed are you, gracious God, creator of the universe and giver of life. Youformed us in your own image and called us to dwell in your infinite love. Yougave the world into our care that we might be your faithful stewards and showforth your bountiful grace.

But we failed to honor your image in one another and in ourselves; we would notsee your goodness in the world around us; and so we violated your creation,

abused one another, and rejected your love. Yet you never ceased to care for us,and prepared the way of salvation for all people.

Through Abraham and Sarah you called us into covenant with you. Youdelivered us from slavery, sustained us in the wilderness, and raised up prophets

to renew your promise of salvation. Then, in the fullness of time, you sent youreternal Word, made mortal flesh in Jesus. Born into the human family, anddwelling among us, he revealed your glory. Giving himself freely to death onthe cross, he triumphed over evil, opening the way of freedom and life.

On the night before he died for us, Our Savior Jesus Christ took bread, and whenhe had given thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to his friends, and said:

Take, eat: This is my Body which is given for you. Do this for the remembranceof me.

As supper was ending, Jesus took the cup of wine, and when he had giventhanks, he gave it to them, and said: Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood ofthe new Covenant, which is poured out for you and for all for the forgiveness ofsins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me.

Therefore we proclaim the mystery of faith:

    All: Christ has died.

Christ is risen.Christ will come again.

Presider: Remembering his death and resurrection, we now present to you from your

creation this bread and this wine. By your Holy Spirit may they be for us the

Body and Blood of our Savior Jesus Christ. Grant that we who share these gifts

may be filled with the Holy Spirit and live as Christs Body in the world. Bring

us into the everlasting heritage of your daughters and sons, that with all your

saints, past, present, and yet to come, we may praise your Name for ever.

Through Christ and with Christ and in Christ, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, to

you be honor, glory, and praise, for ever and ever. Amen.

And now, as our Savior Christ has taught us, we are bold to say,

All: Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name,

thy kingdom come, thy will be done,

on earth as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread.

    And forgive us our trespasses,

as we forgive those who trespass against us.

And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.

For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory,

    for ever and ever. Amen.

Thank you for worshipping with us today. The Worship Committee invites you to continue

building the body of Christ by joining your neighbors for coffee and conversation when you

    have concluded your worship.

Special thanks to John Hammond, baritone, and Doug Moorehead, organ, for todays

Communion music. This anonymous folk hymn, What Wondrous Love Is This, is a favorite of

nineteenth century, rural, shape note singers. The words appear as early as Stith Meads

General Selection of the Newest and Most Admired Hymn and Spiritual Songs Now in Use,

1811, second enlarged edition. The tune first appeared in the appendix of the 1840, 2nd edition

of William Walkers The Southern Harmony and Musical Companion, 1835. The structure of

the text may have been borrowed from the English ballad Captain Kidd.

The Eucharistic prayer, starting on page 8, is fromEnriching Our Worship, which is offered by the Standing Liturgical

Commission to the Church through the General Convention to provide additional resources for worship service. Use is by

    permission of Church Publishing Incorporated.

    A letter from Cindy Shepard

    Dear Members of Christ Church,

In the time that I have served as your Administrative Assistant, I have been astounded by your

commitment, your encouragement, and your dedication. Since I have been home on disability,

I have appreciated your prayers and support.

Many of you know that I have been undergoing chemotherapy. The cancer that I have is not

curable, but it is treatable and the drugs have been doing their job! My latest scans show no

glow in the dark spots. Fortunately, we caught it early and treated it aggressively.

I have been placed on a form of chemo that I will receive every other month for the next two

years. We will continue to track the progress with scans and tests and the doctors assure me I

should have many more years ahead of me.

The cancer does make me very tired, and the chemo makes the fatigue even worse. I have good

days and bad days, but it is impossible to predict how I will feel at any given time. We are

learning to live with the new normal and I have had to adjust my expectations of myself.

Mother Susan has graciously allowed me to remain as a church employee through all of this,

but she now needs to move forward with a more permanent solution for the office. I know that

you will support the new Administrative Assistant with all the grace, love, and compassion that

    you have shown me.

I want to thank you all for all that you have given me in the past few years. I think of you often

and know that you are thinking of me.

    God bless you all,

    Cindy
