EDITORS NOTES
Hi
Well after somewhere around 7-8
years, I have finally got myself a new
phone and the Samsung J archaic has
been retired. This was a big decision
as I am not a fan of the pain and stress
that seems to go along with getting
new technology… in our house any-
way…. I splurged up large and are the
proud owner of a Samsung S8. Yes,,
you heard correctly.. Lol… This is
going to have to last me another 7-8
years too. I do feel that I can justify the
additional expenditure however when I
look at how many new phones Bernie
has had during the same 7-8 year peri-
od. I am sure that mine was cheaper
in the long run…. The most impres-
sive feature that I have found so far (I
only got it today so give me time) is
that I can talk to it, and Bernie can’t...
and it answers me!!! I have not yet
tested any questions that involve life
long decisions, moral standings or just
plain advice when things go wrong. I
will however keep you updated on
such matters next month.
If you see someone without a smile,
give them one of yours…
Jenny

Hi all
Mycoplasma Bovis and Kauri Dieback have been in the news of late. Walking/hiking
access has been blocked left and right, it could only a matter of time before they get
to us, the 4wheeler.
As a way of combating outright blame or just to show some responsibility, whatever
the reason, last month it was put to the members to adopt a “clean truck” policy.
That is to say, no truck would be presented at days start in a dirty/muddy condition,
and that all attempts would be made to remove excessive mud from vehicles at the
end of the day before it is transferred to the road on the way home. It was also noted
that 99% of us are pretty damn good at this already and that nothing will change for
you. Overwhelmingly voted in and will be placed on the trip sheet as a requirement
from now on.
Bear this in mind please, that if you
turn up on a club trip with a truck in
a dirty condition you run the risk of
being turned away, guaranteed if
you are entering a working farm
property.
This is about fairness and respect to
the property owners and has nothing
to do with punishment to you for not
cleaning your truck. Nearly all the
properties we visit are privately
owned working farms or bush blocks,
any new property visited are just as
likely to be privately owned, access
can be blocked at any time for any
number of reasons we don’t want
dirty trucks to be one of them.
Bernie.

Captain’s Corner
Hi All
August has been an eventful month for me.
I joined Peter Cox on his trip down Taupo way and was having a great time until I
attempted a hazard once more than I should have. Having said that apparently I
went further than anybody else on a previous trip had on this particular hazard.
Prado came to a halt and when we were ready to winch it back she would not start.
Turns out I had come down hard on a bump and put a dent in the fuel tank which
had in turn cause the fuel pump to crack. After a dead winch and then an attempt
to tow me up a very long soft climb with a bend in it we decided to leave the Prado
overnight and call in reinforcements. Peter and Nathen arrived the next morning
and we return to the stranded Prado with the fuel tank taken out of Peter’s Jeep.
This was placed on the front seat (see photo) and powered from the cigarette light-
er and hey presto the Prado started immediately.
On the drive back to the main road we came across a guy on a motor bike who
asked us for help to recover a stuck car. We dually followed him only to find the
car he wanted to recover was down a 20-meter cliff. In our humble opinion it had
been stolen and dumped there. Not sure what the motivation of the people trying
to get it back up again was.
Prado was then trailered back to Pete’s place and the fuel pump was replaced.
A huge thanks to Pete and Nathen for their help and also to Ant & Allie and Rory
& Rebecca for staying on and helping me on the Sunday.
With the Prado running again Peter Cox and I went and did a recce of Porters
Road. My plan was to bypass the
real gnarly bits and have a great
trip for the next weekend. But Por-
ters Road had other ideas. The track
is getting very rutted in places even
in the easy sections and the Prado
lost a lot of paint and has new dents.
Unfortunately (or fortunately) only 1
person expressed an interest in do-
ing the trip so it was cancelled. Por-
ters Road is doable but suggest who-
Page 5 August 2018
ever does it next goes in expecting to do a lot of spade work or get very dented.
2 other trips occurred this month, Porters Road and Waiuku. I look forward to hear-
ing how those went.
Upcoming trips are Club Champs on 19 August and Waiuku forest on 9 September.
Planning for the Manukau Winch Challenge in November is underway with all new
stages being set this year. Recces and peg outs will occur in September and October.
I will be away for the next 6 weeks. Initially skiing in Wanaka region and then Deb-
bie and I are off to China for a month. Have fun while I am away

Poutu trip report Pouto trip started off not too good for Paul, he took his jeep off his truck on Friday night, went for a spin and his wheel came off.
So Paul his boy hopped in with someone else on Saturday. Up the beach we went, seen a few seals.
Got to the base of the light house and we all had many attempts to get to the light house. Poor old Kevin's jeep got a good hiding by Dean, he wanted to get there but no, it failed.
So we carried on having fun over the dunes, the down to the wet soft area for a look then crossed deep stream, Kevin was driving his jeep with no snorkel and sucked water into his engine.
Between me and Owen, we waited for tide to go out a bit then towed him back to Bayleys camp.
It was an interesting day, thanks to the 7 trucks that turned up.
