CONGRATULATIONS TO MARIAN!

As you probably all know by now, Marian O’Higgins was elected 2016/2017 Governor Elect for the Michigan District during the Kiwanis state convention held August 25th – 27th. She worked diligently to get out her message as to how she would work for all Kiwanians if elected. We know she will do a great job. Yes, her materials were succint and outlined her platform but the popcorn machine at her table may have played a small role as people gravitated to that wonderful smell and then stopped to chat with Marian or others who were at her booth. Be prepared to have Marian call on you as she begins her work in October.

CLUB MEETINGS

July 19th: Kelly Pino from the Detroit Repertory Theatre shared what is happening at the theater, Michigan’s longest running, nonprofit, professional theatre celebrating its 60th year.

2016 AKTION CLUB CONVENTION The Aktion clubs of Michigan held their state convention August 10th. Five members: Lindell, Calvin, Darvonte, Franklin and John represented the Detroit club at the session which was held at the Wesley Foundation in East Lansing. Advisor Pat DeCarlo accompanied the group along with Jeanette Harris who said she was there for “the fun”.

Pat and Aktion Club members

The Detroit Helping-Out Aktion Club was chosen as a Distinguished Club in recognition of attending the convention for the past three years and having monthly service projects. Congratulations to these hard working Kiwanians! They certainly keep service to others at the center of all that they do. Aktion club member, John, sang “Amazing Grace” and brought the house down. He was also the Detroit Helping-Out Aktion club member of the year.

Singing is really a fun activity with Aktion Club

John with his award and certificate

Throughout the day, the club did activities with with the 4th Wall Theatre and shared lots of ideas for new service projects. It is no wonder that Aktion Clubs are the fastest growing group in the Kiwanis Family of Clubs. We are so proud to be sponsoring this club!

METHODIST CHILDREN’S HOME EVENT

The Methodist Children’s Home Society (MCHS) was founded in 1917 to care for orphans. Today, the organization is a licensed private, non-sectarian child placing agency, as well as a 501c3 non-profit. MCHS helps some of Michigan's most fragile children find safety, hope, love and comfort. Through their residential program, educational and clinical services, transitional living, foster care and adoption programs, they provide for and advocate on behalf of victims of child abuse and neglect. Methodist Children's Home Society houses and cares for boys and young men, finds safe havens and forever families for children in Southeast Michigan through foster care and adoption, and helps youth age out of foster care and become healthy young adults. In August, the Methodist Children's Home Society, Summer Bridges Program hosted a wonderful student recognition program. Our Detroit Kiwanis Foundation made a donation to help make the program possible. Jeanette Harris, Kiwanis No.1 member attended the program. Our support helped provide food, activities and gift cards to reward academic and social success.

GLOBETROTTING JERRY JONES VISITS THE ORLANDO KIWANIS CLUB ON HER WAY TO THE OLYMPICS! On her way to the Summer Olympics in Rio (!!), Jerry Jones visited the Orlando Kiwanis Club. Jerri met Hugo deBeaubien whose father founded the Detroit Times. The family was among the first European settlers to the Detroit area. Lunch was held at the day care center which the Orlando club built. We are sure the club was pleased to have someone from Detroit #1 stop by.

Looks like Jerri is having a grand time in Rio. We will want to see photos and here stories when she returns.

LITTLE LIBRARIES

You may have seen small boxes, shelves, etc. throughout the City of Detroit with books stacked within them and signs that say “Little Library”. Individuals can take a book for free and return it if they care to do so. The idea is to have the library in a neighborhood where there is a lot of foot traffic, both children and adults. Our foundation is providing the funds to build at least two of the little libraries. We would take the responsibility to keep it stocked using books from our books for kids project and donations of adult and children’s books from club members.

You will be hearing more about this in the near future as we pull together information on various designs (we have access to blueprints and detailed instructions). A call will go out to see which of you is handy with a hammer and nail! We will set up a committee to keep the box(es) stocked with books.

Now where to place them? The Eastside Community Network (formerly Warren Conner Community Development Coalition) has received a

grant to do renovation work in the Kiwanis park on the eastside. They will be building a sculpture/reading garden for neighborhood residents. We have been in communication with Larry Halbert, the sculptor who was selected through a community voting process, to be the one to install his design.

Look for further details in the near future as the Detroit Kiwanis #1 Little Libraries project moves forward.

2016 MICHIGAN KIWANIS CONVENTION

Barbara Jean Johnson, Kris Miranne and Marian O’Higgins were our club’s delegates to this year’s Michigan convention. Others in attendance included Marcia Ford, Jim Heymes, Thom Mann, Kimmee Reed, Eric Sabree and Beverly Wiggins. Special thanks go to Gloria Smart who worked the Key Leader Camp booth and Karen Walker who helped at Marian’s table.

Sessions and workshops focused on marketing your club, the FORMULA (building and strengthening clubs), and CLE training for officers. Of course, an important part of any Kiwanis convention is the comradery and sharing stories/experiences with
