Mustang of the Month:
In Memory of
Mark Smith
Pierce County Mustang Club lost one of “The Good Mustang Guys”.
Mark Smith, also known for his personalized “P-51” Vista Blue 2007 Mustang, passed away in early July.
Mark was always ready for a cruise to anywhere. He willingly lent a helping hand when and where he could.
Sharing and showing his Mustang with others was a treat for him. There was always excitement as he talked about and showed you what he had done with and to the Mustang. We would get into great discussions about
our Mustangs, as both were V-6s, me keeping the stock ex-haust and him changing his to look like a GT. It didn’t matter if they were old or new, Mark loved to talk about Mustangs.
He was a great listener and easy to talk to. He loved to
give one liners, especially during the general meetings.
Mark will be missed by our members especial-ly at his favorite Saturday breakfast place checking out the want ads, at Sunnyside Beach reading a good book and watching the sunset, our Friday Night Din-ners, cruises, club events, parades, and the car show – especially this year, when I was letting him help again after making him sit out last
year’s due to his over doing it the year before – boy did he enjoy re-minding me of that.
I will miss his great smile, his wonderful laugh, and his teasing.
Our hearts and prayers go out to his family.
Our hearts are heavy with sadness; Mark will be missed by many.

Charity Events
50/50 Raffle– All year the club provides an opportunity for members to purchase tickets for this raffle. Fifty percent of the proceeds go to a member with the win-ner drawn at the Holiday Potluck. You don’t have to be present to win.
Fifty percent goes to one of the charities we support.
Missy has set her goal this year at $600 so we will be hearing from her a lot. Be ready to give at any PCMC event. We are up to $255! (only $345 to go) We can do it! This fund raiser is fun and the more we collect, the more goes to our charity. Fun and a good cause!
One of the 3 charities that PCMC works with is
the Emergency Food Network, EFN. In addition
to our annual cash donation, we go to the distri-
bution center in Lakewood 2 times per year to
repackage food.
In 2014 EFN reports that they distributed:
4,755,277 lbs. of vegetables; 2,392,322 lbs. of
fruit; 1,411,483 lbs. of grains; 942,056 lbs. of
protein; 449,064 lbs. of dairy, 1,734,114 lbs. of
USDA and more for a total of about 15.3 million
pounds of food. According to the Annual Re-
port, “The need has gone up 11% since 2011.
To meet this need we are distributing 17%
more food in the same time-frame.”
This serves about 118,451 visits from clients
per month. The distribution goes to 57,936 ba-
bies (0-2), 441,986 children (3-18), 655,444
adults (19-54) and 266,051 seniors (55+).
Thank you to our club members who volunteer
their time to repackage oats, corn, apples, pota-
toes, and whatever they put in front of us. It is
fun and a great cause. Thank you also, to all
those who contribute money for EFN through-
out the year.
Our next opportunity to repackage food is in
October. Keep watching the newsletter and let
Nancy Freeman know if you are interested in
helping.
Charity Highlights: EFN
Staples Rewards Program The club will earn $2 for every toner or ink car-
tridge members turn in at their local store and
mention Pierce County Mustang Club.
Don’t live near a Staples??? Bring to a club

We were entertained by Lance Lambert from the Vintage Vehi-cle Show at our July club meet-ing. We heard funny tales of a young valet not so successful,
and pranks pulled on a future step father's car. Lance read
a a few stories from his new book, Gears, Grins & Gaso-line, My Wheel
Life Adventures.
Members also had the opportunity to not only purchase a book or two, but to have their al-

Paul Geise
Hey Folks! Hope you are all enjoying the sum-mer .
I know we’re in the middle of “car show” sea-son, but I thought I would share a little some-thing I discovered quite by accident.
The rear badge on the trunk lid of our 2007 GT was look-ing rather funky. (I don’t mean “Tower of Power” funky… I mean yucky funky.) I purchased a chrome billet faux gas cap from “American Muscle”. It’s a beautiful piece with the “GT” logo in relief in the center. We had it on for a while and I thought it would look bet-ter if the “GT’ logo was a different color than chrome. I was going to paint it myself as I thought having it done would be too expensive for such a small area. I also knew it would be hard to paint chrome, have the paint stick, and that taping it off would be a pain…plus, my wife knows I’m not a patient man… she says I curse enough.
Driving the car home from the store one day, I saw a company that “wraps” cars and trucks in vinyl. I pulled in and asked about my “GT” logo problem. The guy came out, looked at it and told me no problem. He went back into his shop, came out with tracing paper, traced the
logo, had me pick a color, printed it out, die cut the logo, stuck it on the emblem, cleaned it up with a razor blade, gave me a second logo in case I wanted to use it elsewhere, and charged
me $15!! This all took about 15-20 minutes.
I started thinking (which my wife knows is a problem from the get go) of other things I could do to make our Mustang more unique and per-sonal. So far, I’ve had him design a “horse head” with the “GT” logo for under the hood…
about $50… installed, a checker board pattern for an aluminum radiator cover-$35, installed, a tri-bar Mustang logo for a reservoir cover-$15, and it goes on.
I guess what I’m getting at is, here is a way to do some “custom work” without costing an arm and a leg.
There are a few things you should know. First and probably foremost, the vinyl will not adhere well to a rough surface, such as plastic or metal that has a “pebbly” surface. Also, let them know if there is any wax on the part, although they usually clean it anyway. It can be used under the hood as it will take some heat (no… I won’t be “checkering my headers as it won’t take that much heat…but it would look cool!)
You can wash it and I use a spray on wax with-out any problem. A paste wax will “catch” the edges and will be difficult to remove…personal experience.
Have an idea of what you want as far as an im-age and bring in a couple of pictures. They can tweak and adjust the image and color on their computers, and have you approve the design before printing.
Think about it and “personalize your ride” (that’s a “hip” way to say “your car!”)
For more information, just talk to me.

Vintage Races July 4th
June Events
BOOM! Well that’s what you might have heard
on the evening of the 4th. Who am I kid-
ding….all day long. But
during the day 12 cars and
their 20some family and
friends showed up to listen to
RUMBLE—RUMBLE! And
boy did we hear it.
It was a gorgeous day, maybe a little hot but we
all came prepared with “chilly
towels” and spray bottles of
water and lots of
water to drink.
We met at the South Hill Panera’s
and cruised down the freeway to
lots of looks and thumbs up. Arrival
was in plenty of time to stake out
the shade trees and set up “camp”
for the day.
Several races occurred before we heard that
unmistakable sound of the big V-8s. You could
almost hear them all around the track.
Then it was our turn. “Drivers
take your places and start your
engines.” Our drivers got to ex-
perience the track, if not the
speed of course. We did see Missy “waving” to
her dad who was right behind her. Was he
“drafting”?
As with all of our events, it was
a lot of fun, great looking cars,
and in this case, the thrill of
speed and power.
Join us again for our next event. (see the calen-
dar)
Friday Night Dinner South Hill Red BJ’s July 24
Once again we got together
to eat and visit. This time at
South Hill’s BJ’s. I saw
some big burgers and sal-
ads and pizza, and fish. We
had a small group of 13 this night but it was still
a fun time.
Chuck, that
looked like a
real mouthful.
Next month it is right across the driveway at
South Hill Red Robin. Hope we see you there.

Lakewood Ford Mini Show July 25
Some shows are big and some not so much but
regardless this was a great day for a “Mini
Show.” The weather was comfortable, no rain,
and enough time to talk and look at what every-
one has done to their cars. I just don’t know if I
can afford all my husbands new ideas.
I really enjoyed seeing how others show-off
their cars. The displays say a little something
about the owners as well as the cars. I also en-
joyed watching people prepare for the viewing.
Lots of bags of car care products and towels
and more towels. Someone mentioned that get-
ting your car ready took a lot of work but that it
brings people together and I think that is what is
most fun about the process.
Today’s show really reminded me of the social
side of car shows and the club. Yes, there was
some car talk—What did you do? Where did
you get it done? How much? What are you do-
ing next? But there was also just some honest
talk about why people joined a club, the social
aspect of PCMC. Maybe even a new car for
someone…..And some new members.
Thank you to Lakewood Ford for providing
lunch for us and for sponsoring the club. They
were great hosts.

Informational Article: Reasons to Own a Convertible
So when I spoke with members about doing ar-ticles for the newsletter I was handed one about convertibles. The author is unknown so I could-n’t ask permission to reprint it but I will steal from it. Hopefully, before this month’s letter
goes to “print” some of our own members will share their top reasons for wanting or buying a convertible. So here are some ideas from the article.
First some definitions, as provided by the arti-cle:
Convertible—(purist) 2-door with a back seat and a retractable fabric top
Phaeton—4-door sedan with a retractable fabric top
Cabriolet—2-door coup with back seat and a fold-down top
Roadster—2-door, 2-seater and a drop top
You thought this would be simple! According to the article, “there are more ways to go topless than you’ll find on an Ibiza beach.” As a good researcher, I looked that up….there will not be pictures! Let’s just say that this is a family news-letter and we will be calling any car that can re-move its top, a convertible.
“So why do people want convertibles: “Top 10 Reasons to Drive a Convertible” (reprint with a little added here and there)
1. Eliminates Blind Spots—Put the top down on your convertible, and the dangerous blind spot created by the c-pillar (the column that supports the roof at the back of a car) disap-pears, leaving unobstructed 360 degree visi-bility. What could be safer than that?
2. Facilitates Passive Multi-tasking—In an in-creasingly busy world, any time you can add a second task to your day without any addi-tional effort, you’d be silly to pass up the op-portunity. A convertible allows you to add sun tanning to your commute.
3. Responds to Your Moods—Even on the nic-est of days, people occasionally experience sour moods, Driving a convertible doesn’t
mean you have to drop the top every time you leave a parking space—you can still choose to huddle beneath the fabric top, preserving that sour face until you are fully ready to face the day. Once you cheer up, you can put the top down and share your shining face with the world.
4. Unlimited Headroom—How many times has this happened to you: You’re on the road, when you see the perfect, authentic, 10 foot Tiki totem pole for your backyard and it’s on-ly $10! The only problem is that your sedan’s trunk will barely hold a golf bag and the Tiki gift stand is going out of business forever. If you were driving a convertible, that beauty would be in your back yard right now and it would have been a magnificent spectacle traveling down the highway all the way home.
5. Gives You Entry Options—Haven’t we all tried the Dukes of Hazzard entry into our sport coupes, leaping through the open window directly into the driver’s seat? (check a few heads to see) Well, with a convertible you can actually use those vaulting skills that your high school gym teacher insisted you develop (wait, I was that teacher!), and you’ll have a chance of getting behind the wheel without sustaining major head trauma.
6. Eliminates Embarrassing Phone Calls—Leave your convertible top down all the time and you’ll never have to call the auto club to confess that you’ve locked your keys in the car—again.
7. Fosters an Interest in Science—Take your children for a late night drive in your convert-ible and encourage them to look up at the stars in the sky. Before long, you may be chauffeuring a potential NASA astronaut or rocket scientist. (not to mention the interest in the weather most convertible owners pos-sess)
(continued on the next page)
Pony News August 2015
Informational Article: Reason to Drive a Convertible
(Continued)
8. Great for a Relationship—Think about it—when was the last time you saw an unhappy couple driving around with the top down? It’s much harder to argue in a convertible, the combination of wind noise and exposure make a fight much less likely in a convertible than in a sedan.
9. Fun—Driving a convertible is the kind of fun that doesn’t rely on speed or handling. Even a slow convertible is fun to drive. There’s nothing better than being in the elements while still being in your car—the wind in your hair, the sun in your face, the smell of nature instead of the chill of air conditioning. When you have a convertible, you’ll look for oppor-tunities to drive, a beautiful day can be ampli-fied by a nice drive in your drop top.
10. Chicks Dig Convertibles—If you are a girl, you know that this is true; if you are not a girl, you will find that driving a convertible will help you to attract and retain them. This is a prov-en fact, at least according to my expert indus-try analysis.
So there you have it. That should be enough ammunition to go out and rent or buy your next convertible. I would gladly give you more, but I’ve got to get this tiki totem pole out of my back seat and into the garden before the neighbors start to talk.”
Thank you to “Author Unknown” for providing
this insight into the mind of a convertible owner.
Now let’s hear from our club members:
Parade opportunities
More space for giving
Rachel Lanigan—”The
reason I enjoy my convertible
is I love the feel of the wind on
my face. It certainly isn’t be-
cause I wanted goose poop
from bumper to bumper.” (Yes, there is a
story!)
Pete and Nancy Freeman—
”You need a convertible so
that you can drive around in
a Koolrde!”
Brian and Betty Purves—
”We thought it would be best and most fun
with the kids and grandkids. It worked out
great at the “Fantasy Lights.”
Pam and Wayne Pistella—”I loved converti-
bles from a young age. I love driving home
from the base and being able to look up and
see the planes overhead.”

In Memory of “Duke Rob-bins” by Greg Robbins
My father grew up in the late 50’s ~ early 60’s. This was the start of the modern car culture. As I grew up, I would listen to his stories of the cars he had and how he would modify them to go faster or look better. His favorite was his ‘56 Merc with a flathead V8 and shaved door han-dles, Persimmon and White.
I heard stories of street races and cruising. When I was about 10 he bought a 1969 Ford Bronco. We would take it all over the moun-tains of Northern California. I can remember crossing streams so deep water was coming into the cabin. Us kids probably logged 50,000 miles in the back of the Bronco. One of the first modifications to the Bronco was the installation of a roll bar with 2 inches of foam padding to
protect our heads as we bounced around in the back.
Each year we would pack our camping gear and head down to the sand dunes at Pismo Beach for the Fourth of July weekend. Each year he would push that Bronco to its limits on the sand and inevitably, something would break. That meant, get it home and make it big-ger and stronger.
My dad’s final years were spent in Reno, Neva-da and he would always talk about the Hot Au-gust Nights Car Show. His love of everything cars is why this sponsorship is in his honor. He would have loved to be involved in this club with me.
