Topic: “What Will it Take to Defeat Alzheimer’s Disease and Related Disorders”Speaker: Lennart Mucke, MD, Director, Gladstone Institute of Neurological Disease, Professor of Neurology & Neuroscience, UCSFDate and Time: Thursday, January 22, 2009 from 6:00 - 7:30 p.m.Location: SRI Menlo Park, Middlefield Road at Ringwood - Dining Room in the International Building

Entrances to Conference Center parking are next to the church on Ravenswood and at Ringwood and Middlefield.

Topic Description                          Join Dr. Lennart Mucke for a discussion of the historical approaches to developing therapies for Alzheimer’s, what leading edge research is uncovering, as well as reasons for optimism in our ability to treat Alzheimer’s and other devastating neurological diseases.Alzheimer’s is a progressive and fatal neurological disease with an immense and growing impact on society.  Alzheimer’s affects 4.6 million new patients annually and is the seventh leading cause of death in the US.  More than two-thirds of patients are cared for by family and friends, and this exacts an enormous toll in terms of emotional stress, work disruptions and time.  Due to our aging demographics, the prevalence of Alzheimer’s in the US is expected to triple by 2050 to 13.2 million.Alois Alzheimer identified the disease in 1906.  Over 100 years later, there are multiple treatments available, but their benefits are only modest.  Breakthroughs in new treatments and protective therapies are needed, but these require a better understanding of the disease process.  At the Gladstone Institute of Neurological Disease (GIND), Dr. Mucke developed transgenic models of Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease which lead to the identification of molecular processes that cause or modulate the course of these diseases.  GIND continues to lead

investigative efforts into pathogenic factors and pathways at the molecular, cellular, network and behavioral level.

Speaker BioDr. Mucke did his thesis research in neurophysiology and neuroanatomy at the Max-Planck-Institute for Biophysical Chemistry.  He then trained in internal medicine at the Cleveland Clinic and in neurology at Mass General.  He did a postdoctoral fellowship in neuroimmunology and neurovirology at the Scripps Research Institute.  In 1996, Dr. Mucke was recruited by the Gladstone Institutes and the UCSF Department of Neurology to head a new program in molecular neurobiology in San Francisco.   The rapid progress made by this program resulted in the establishment of GIND, which Dr. Mucke has directed since its inauguration in 1998.

Speaker Bio

In 1986, Rogene founded The Bridgewater Group.  Her vision was twofold:      1.  To establish a consulting firm to bring out the best             of people at work, namely, they would actively          participate in making the organization successful, and          would unleash a new-found enthusiasm for their                                                          work.      2.  To design learning systems for creating long-term results and impact on the          company's operations. This would be a very different approach from traditional          training models, which too often were implemented as a band-aid or "quick fix"           to a problem

How has this vision played out? Rogene's work has brought increased organizational capacity and talent retention to companies across North America, Europe, the Middle East and Asia. She works collaboratively with client consultants and managers, to align their business goals and strategies, performance needs, professional development and performance support. Her consulting services and learning initiatives strengthen the way people work together, as they implement strategies in pursuit of organizational success.

Rogene is well known for her conference presentations. Her speaking engagements include international conferences of the American Society of Training and Development and the International Society for Performance and Instruction.

As an adjunct faculty member she has taught classes at John F. Kennedy University, Master of Business Administration and Career Development Master programs, and has lectured at the University of California Extension, Berkeley.

Rogene currently serves as President of the Institue of Management Consultants (IMC USA) Northern California Chapter. She has served on the following Boards: President of the Golden Gate Chapter of the American Society for Training and Development. the California Career Development Association, the Contact Care Center and the Board of Trustees of Moraga Valley Presbyterian Church Foundation.

A Registered Nurse, Ms. Baxter holds a BA in Behavioral Science and an MA in Career Development. She is a recipient of the prestigious "Alumna of the Year" award by John F. Kennedy University School of Business Administration.

Topic: “Brand Defense and Lifecycle Management of Mature Drugs”Speaker: Robert P. Cook, Managing Partner, Cook & CompanyDate and Time: Tuesday Evening, Feb. 10, 2009Location: TIPS, Palo Alto

Topic DescriptionThis presentation will revisit the past to plan for the future. It will assist in developing a multi-tiered patent expiration strategy. In 2006, Tufts University updated its ongoing study of the average R&D cost of developing and bringing a new drug to market at $802 million. Why jeopardize expenditures of this magnitude by not planning a multi-tiered patent expiration strategy?

We take you back to the 1980's and 1990's to revisit strategies that were initiated but only partially consummated. Today, according to R&D Directions magazine, Brand Companies are once again seeking ways to protect their product positions and sales upon patent expiration. It's time to take another look at opportunities to preserve the assets. Several Brand companies followed through on these strategies and are pleased with the results. Specifically, these strategies can be implemented by companies with new products to protect and maximize long term product sales and market share. Successful firms have employed strategy and tactics to assure product longevity such as:    .  Proactivity in planning product lifecycles.    .  Are not afraid of the "G" word.    .  Are not willing to throw dollars into the wind when they could be retained.    .  Doing what is necessary to support their loyal shareholder and financial analyst

communities. CLIMB ABOARD TO THE FUTURE!!!

Seminar DescriptionOver the past decade, there has been a significant increase in multinational clinical trials in part due to the increased clarity related to the allowance of foreign data in drug approvals (ICH E5), the emergence of developing economies and markets, and efforts by drug sponsors to streamline their global development programs. Successful execution of a multinational regulatory strategy mandates a thorough understanding of international regulatory processes and submission requirements. While simultaneous drug development in the US and EU is commonly performed, integration of Japan into the drug development strategy has proven to be challenging.

This session will highlight the regulatory considerations for preparing global regulatory submissions with particular emphasis on Japan.
