NEUROPHYSIOLOGY TESTING

Riddiford Neurology 19 Riddiford Street Newtown Wellington

Your doctor has requested nerve conduction studies and/or EMG. The following information will hopefully answer your questions regarding these tests. A decision regarding which tests are necessary will be made after you have been interviewed and examined by the neurologist.

Electromyography (EMG) This test looks at the electrical activity

of the muscle by placing a small

measuring needle within the muscle.

Recordings are taken with the muscle

relaxed and when the muscle is tensed.

This takes a few minutes for each

muscle. There is a mild scratch as the

needle is placed, however the test is

also well tolerated by the vast majority

of patients.

Important information

• Please try to keep hands and feet

warm prior to the test. This may

necessitate wearing gloves.

• Please bring a list of your

medications and tell the doctor if

you are taking any anticoagulant

medications (blood thinners).

• Try to wear comfortable, loose

fitting clothing so arms and legs

can be accessed.
