The engines in the Audi A4: progressive, powerful, efficient. All the petrol engines are

equipped with TFSI, a consequent combination of economical direct injection and

turbocharging or mechanical charger module. The TDI engines are provided with the

common rail injection technology and a diesel particulate filter; the 3.0 TDI engine is

also available as a clean diesel version. As standard, all engines are equipped with the

start-stop system and recuperation, as a result of which they are among the most fuel-

efficient power units of their class.

Upon request, the Audi A4 can be fitted with Audi drive

select an innovative feature that changes the feel of

your Audi at the touch of a button, simply by selecting

one of the different vehicle settings: comfort, auto, dy-

namic, efficiency or by selecting the individual mode

which can be set up using the MMI navigation system.

Working within system limits, three optional assis-

tance systems support you during every trip. Audi ac-

tive lane assist warns you if you inadvertently drift out

of your lane, while Audi side assist signals if there is

another vehicle in your direct vicinity in the adjacent

lane during lane changing, for example. Adaptive

cruise control additionally keeps the correct distance

from the vehicle in front.

The electromechanical power steering works depend-

ing on the speed and ensures greater steering precision

and comfort. In addition, it only requires power if you

actively request steering support.

Also new: the attention assist in the driver information

system which analyses driving behaviour and recom-

mends breaks, thus supporting the driver during long-

er journeys.

The luggage compartment in the Audi A4 Avant has a capacity of 490 litres, which increases to 1,430 litres

with the rear seats folded down. Lashing eyes, bag hooks, a storage compartment with a net and a 12V

socket provide further possibilities for using the luggage compartment exactly how you want to.

Standard in the Audi A4 Avant: the reversible luggage compartment floor. Covered on one side with

high-quality velour, it can be easily turned over to become a hard-wearing dirt tray. On request, the

A4 Avant is equipped with an electrically opening and closing luggage compartment lid. Also optional

is a rail system comprising a telescopic bar and retaining strap for even more improved transport of

your luggage.

Lots of information, lots of space: the interior with the intelligently designed cockpit. Various details visibly enhance the

value and functionality of the interior. For example, the light switch, air-conditioning system, MMI rotary/push-button

control, vents, mirror adjustment switches, window controls and the gear or selector lever gaiter are decorated with

chrome trims. New interior colours and inlays, such as reflex finish in steel grey or moor brown or optionally Aluminium

Trigon give a sporty appearance; refined wood types, such as Fine grain ash, natural brown lend an elegant appearance.

The optional MMI navigation plus has been enhanced. Its operation is intuitive via the MMI rotary/push-button control

with integrated joystick or voice control. MMI navigation plus features include a high-quality 7-inch colour display with 3D

In the interior the optional climate-controlled comfort seats in the front

are impressive. You experience luxurious comfort and excellent lateral

support thanks to their soft-feel design and shaped side bolsters. The

seat and backrest surfaces are ventilated and heated.

The optional efficient 3-zone deluxe automatic air conditioning is equipped

with a sunlight-dependent control that sets the air temperature, flow rate

and distribution electronically with a separate regulation for the driver and

front passenger sides and for rear passengers. The automatic recirculation

mode by means of an air quality sensor and the combined particulates filter

provide for even more pleasant air conditioning.

The A4 models use TFSI technology. And the

remarkable thing about it is that it combines the

advantages of FSI with a supercharger, which

ensures even better power delivery. All TFSI

engine features as standard a start-stop system

and of course fulfil the EU5 emission standard.

The 1.8 TFSI has 125 kW of power and a

maximum torque of 320 Nm. And its one of the

most fuel-efficient engines of its class. The Audi

valvelift system lowers consumption and due to

an intelligent thermal management the engine

reaches its operating temperature faster. At the

same time, it directs heat to the interior which

increases your comfort and helps to lower fuel

consumption. With its 155 kW, the 2.0 TFSI has

an output rating of up to 350 Nm. It is

characterised by good consumption values and

low CO emissions. The most powerful TFSI

engine of the series which is equipped with an

innovative mechanical supercharging system with

charge air cooler is featured in the Audi S4.

It turns the 3.0 TFSI V6 into a compact

powerhouse with moderate fuel consumption.

One in every two Audi cars sold today is a diesel.

What we take for granted now was quite a

sensation a mere 20 years ago: Audi revolutionised

the market with the first 2.5 litre TDI engine.

Since then, developments such as common rail

technology with its refined and precise fuel

distribution have made TDI even more efficient.

Consequently, since the first TDI, the engines have

become more economical, whilst specific output

has increased. So it was only logical that a diesel

car should then enter the world of motorsport.

And successfully too: in 2006, Audi was the first

car maker to win the Le Mans 24 Hours with a

diesel-powered race car, the Audi R10 TDI and

then went on to repeat this victory several times

over, most recently in 2011.

Powerful 2.0 TDI and 3.0 TDI engines are available

for the Audi A4, which operate with intelligent

common rail diesel technology. In addition, they are

equipped with the start-stop system as standard.

The 2.0 TDI engine has 88 to 130 kW of power.

3.0 TDI is available with 150 and 180 kW; in the

180 kW variant also as clean diesel. In addition

to their efficiency, the TDI engines are of course

also characterised by their power.

The piezo injectors in the 3.0 TDI

open and close in fractions of a

millisecond and inject fuel several

times into the combustion chamber

at pressures of up to 2,000 bar.

In some cases, an injection process

can involve the injection of the

tiniest of amounts weighing less

than a thousandth of a gramme.

Pre-injection results in a gentle

combustion process and consequently

quattro

quattro is a permanent all-wheel drive system.

If the wheels on one axle of the vehicle lose grip

on the road and threaten to spin, then the power

is transferred to the other axle automatically and

permanently distributed through the self-locking

centre differential with wheel-selective torque

distribution. The basic distribution is 40 : 60 40 %

of the power comes from the front axle, 60 % from

the rear. The benefit is better traction during

acceleration and improved safety due to exceptional

grip. So much for the technology. But what makes

quattro unique is really the driving feel.

As if you are stuck to the road, some customers

say. We put it like this: quattro gives you a better

feel for the road and thus more safety.

The quattro with sports differential further

reinforces the unmistakeable quattro feeling.

Vehicles tend to experience understeer when

steering or driving into corners. This is a normal

physical process: A moving object opposes a

change in direction. The elastic tyres and the

suspension mounts tense up until the new

direction has been adopted. When accelerating

into a corner, the load on the front axle is

reduced and it therefore transfers less lateral

force to the tyres the vehicle understeers.

With the sports differential on the rear axle, the

tendency to understeer is largely counteracted.

This is because the quattro rear axle differential

has been extended left and right by a clutch

system with two gear levels. They ensure that the

individual wheels on the rear axle receive different

levels of torque. The clutches are activated by an

electro-hydraulic actuator. Depending, for

example, on the steering angle, lateral acceleration,

yaw angle and driving speed, the system

calculates the right distribution of wheel torque

for any driving situation. In this way the power

is specifically channelled to the outer rear wheel,

when steering or accelerating into a corner. The

effect: the vehicle is effectively pressed into the

corner and follows the angle of the front wheels.

With quattro we created one of

the best all-wheel drive systems in the world.

Of course, that was not good enough for us.

Everybody defines driving dynamics differently.

We define it like this: drive exactly how you feel.

With the optional Audi drive select, you can influence

individual vehicle components at the push of a

button and so change the character of your Audi.

You have up to five modes available: efficiency,

comfort, dynamic, auto and, in conjunction with

one of the optional MMI navigation systems,

individual mode, allowing you to determine

yourself how the associated vehicle components

should behave. The comfort mode is especially

suitable for providing the most relaxed driving

possible on long journeys. The auto mode offers a

generally comfortable yet sporty driving experience.

For particularly sporty driving, for example on

winding roads, there is the dynamic mode. The

efficiency mode, however, improves consumption

values. As an integral part of Audi drive select,

it is characterised by more energy-efficient

operation and a changed shift program. In every

mode, the vehicle adjustments depend on the

equipment present. Audi drive select interacts

with engine, automatic transmission and

steering.

In addition, you can influence the suspension

with damper regulation, the dynamic steering*,

the cornering light, cruise control, adaptive

cruise control and the quattro with sports

differential among other features if available.

The engine and gears react more spontaneously

or in a more balanced manner to movements of

the accelerator, depending on the mode chosen.

Moreover, the engine speeds at which gear

changes take place are varied in models with

automatic transmission in dynamic mode, they

only happen at higher engine speeds, while in

comfort mode they take place at lower ones.

The steering can also be adapted to the driving

situation, from sporty and firm to comfortable.

quattro with sports differential distributes the drive

force variably to the wheels of the rear axle to attain

a high level of agility and acceleration performance

while cornering.

MMI Multi Media Interface

Radio: The built-in radio receiver is set up for

VHF, LW and MW and optionally transmits digital

radio with a continually updated station list.

Media: Display of available media sources

such as the jukebox, inserted SDHC cards,

Audi music interface or CDs and DVDs;

display of optional TV tuners

Telephon/Bluetooth: The optionally available

Preparation for mobile phone (Bluetooth) and

Bluetooth car phone online have a selection

screen containing call lists, directory and

selection interface as the start-up setting.

Car: This function allows the direct control

of driver assistance systems, vehicle settings,

climate control and service functions.

Our claim Vorsprung durch Technik is one that we

are trying to fulfil in every part of an Audi as

demonstrated by the Multi Media Interface (MMI)

which has undergone further development. The

MMI is used to operate a number of in-car media,

the navigation system and other comfort functions.

Until now, the optional MMI has been easy to use

but the new MMI navigation plus which has been

further developed makes it even easier, with a

reduced number of buttons for a better overview.

All six so-called hard keys, for telephone or

navigation functions for example, are located

around the central rotary/push-button control

for intuitive operation. The buttons for radio and

media are logically located with the volume

control. In comjunction with Bluetooth car phone

online you have Google Earth images available for

navigation. The point-of-interest search will take

you to restaurants, sights or other places that

might be interesting for you. And on request,

Digital Audi Broadcasting reception guarantees

even more music enjoyment.

By the way, you can make all your navigation

system entries by voice control, leaving you more

relaxed when you reach your destination.

News online provides comprehensive news on

current world affairs.

Audi connect: Navigation with Google Earth images and Street View* enables navigation with

high-resolution aerial and satellite images, photographs, topographical features, roads and their

designations, and business entries. In Street View you can form a realistic picture of your desti-

nation even before you arrive. With the Point-of-Interest (POI) search function with voice control, you

get detailed tips about holiday destinations, opening hours or visitor reviews, and you have access to

the entire breadth of the Internet. Destination input by means of myAudi or Google Maps enables

you to plan your route on your home computer with individual navigation destinations, and then send

it to the vehicle. When you start your journey the planned route is loaded into MMI navigation plus.

Audi connect: Traffic information online

You not only get the right route to your desti-

nation but the quickest one too. In addition to

traffic flow information, traffic information

online provides faster information on the

formation and dissolution of traffic jams for

dynamic route guidance as well as greater

coverage of the road network.

Mobile information services offer the ultimate

connection. With Audi connect you can easily

search the Internet for any special destinations

in the MMI, or retrieve the latest news and the

current weather forecast for the intended

navigation destination.

Data transfer is by means of the UMTS module

of the Bluetooth car phone online, which can be

ordered as an option for the MMI navigation plus.

One special feature is the Wi-Fi hotspot. With a

laptop, an iPad or a netbook you can retrieve

important information, data and e-mails. There is

an application for Internet radio* available for

some smartphones. Detailed information about

Assistance systems

Because they protect something very valuable,

you will find our most outstanding employees working in the area of vehicle safety.

The development of a new vehicle includes a

number of crash tests. At first as virtual tests on

computers, then later with the car itself in the

halls of the Audi Vehicle Safety Department. Our

engineers do not just evaluate data from their

own series of tests but also data from real

accidents recorded by accident researchers and

scientists from the Audi Accident Research Unit

(AARU). This was founded in 1998 and works

together with the police and doctors to establish

the most accurate information possible about

accidents. With the help of this information,

our series of tests is continually being refined.

In the A4 and S4 models, there are many safety

features which work in concert. In the event of an

accident, the engine and the fuel supply are

immediately stopped, the door locking

mechanism is opened and the hazard lights are

activated. The interior of the vehicles is equipped

with an airbag system: adaptive front-end

collision protection with seat position recognition

and full-size airbag for driver and front

passenger; side airbags at front (thorax/pelvis

airbags) and head airbag system. The front seats

are additionally equipped with seat belt

tensioners and belt force limiters, and the special

seat structure impedes slipping underneath the

seat belt. The highly rigid passenger compartment

made from quality steel with improved deformation

qualities offers extremely good protection.

adaptive cruise control including Audi pre sense front:* automatic

distance control (control range 30 200 km/h); working within system

limits, it uses a radar sensor to detect vehicles ahead and maintain this

distance by automatic braking and accelerating; 4 distance levels and

different driving modes can be selected individually; including Audi

pre sense front: The Audi braking guard warns the driver about

a detected imminent collision with the vehicle in front through an

extended brake assist feature; extended by the function of maximum

decelaration: this is initiated at speeds below 30 km/h if there is a

danger of collision with a stationary or moving vehicle in order to

avoid this collision if possible.

The Audi A4 not only comes with many new technical innovations

but also with something extra special on request: a sort of sixth

sense or Audi pre sense. Driving situations are categorised

through a radar sensor, and warning measures initiated through

to collision avoidance. Audi pre sense front additionally

monitors the traffic ahead via a radar sensor of the optional

adaptive cruise control. In critical situations, the Audi braking

guard warns the driver and reinforces braking force if necessary.

Audi active lane assist*: lane compliance assistant; supports the

driver within system limits comfortably in keeping in the lane

(operating range 60 250 km/h). If the system is activated/ready and

the driver has not operated the indicators, Audi active lane assist will

guide the vehicle within recognised lane boundary lines by means of

gentle, corrective steering intervention; the driver can choose whether

he would like to be monitored continuously or just shortly before

crossing the traffic lane marker (choice of earlier or later steering

time); additional steering vibration can be adjusted if the driver wishes

Audi side assist*: lane changing assistant, working within system

limits at speeds of 30 km/h and above, the system uses radar

technology to monitor the area on the left, right and behind the

moving vehicle and informs or warns you by means of an LED display

in the exterior mirror if the Audi side assist has detected another

vehicle assessed as critical for lane-changing.

Please note: the systems can only work within system limits. They can support drivers, but they are still required to be attentive at all times.

The Audi Space Frame (ASF), which is used in a range

method, the weight of the body shell is reduced by

about a third in comparison with conventional steel

constructions. The latest innovation in lightweight

construction. the weight-reducing aluminium hybrid

construction used in the Audi A6.

Furthermore, with the TDI, Audi has developed one

of the worlds most successful diesel technologies.

The combination of direct diesel injection and

turbocharging provides high efficiency and

excellent engine power. Current highlight: the

3.0 TDI clean diesel in the Audi A4 Saloon. It

already fulfils the EU6 emission standard that does

not come into force in Europe until 2014.

Another highlight: the downsizing technology of

the TFSI petrol engines. Five times in succession,

the 2.0 TFSI engine has been voted Engine of the

Year. A new evolutionary stage in efficiency is set

by Audi with the Q5 hybrid quattro: as a pioneer of

electrical mobility, it marks the entry into a future

that will have low emission levels in the long term.

The potential of the frugal TDI and TFSI engines

is brought particularly efficiently onto the road

with the S tronic dual-clutch transmission with

low engine speeds and shorter gearshifting

times. And the aerodynamic design of the Audi

bodies can contribute to an additional fuel saving

through a combination of low drag and low lift.

All measures contribute towards a perfect

combination of efficiency and sportiness in every
