Building an Audi is an extremely complicated business. And yet a simple principle applies for all models: all vehicle components interlock precisely in order to produce emission-reducing synergies. What started in accordance with this principle at the end of the 1980s with Audi lightweight construction and the revolutionary Audi Space Frame (ASF®) is now known as the reversal of the weight spiral: every lightweight component has an impact on other components, which can in turn be made smaller. In this way, existing forms and materials are continuously being improved with regard to their functionality, the lowest

possible weight and their production process. With the goal of building vehicles that are even more efficient and make more sparing use of resources. At the same time, more and more efficiency technologies are being built into an Audi. These include recuperation and the start-stop system. Not to mention progressive, efficient high-tech engines. For greater driving dynamics, high compression, more efficient combustion and lower CO₂ emissions. All this is known as Audi ultra. Today and in the future – towards CO₂-reduced mobility.

Less weight. More savings, power and endurance. Audi lightweight technology. What originally came from lightweight body construction has now made its way into nearly all areas, combining innovative materials such as aluminium, carbon and magnesium, intelligent design principles and resource-saving manufacturing processes into an overall concept.

Braking that leads to even more efficient driving. With brake energy recovery (recuperation). Part of the kinetic energy produced when braking and coasting is temporarily stored in the vehicle’s battery and then used when accelerating. Depending on the driving cycle, this can save up to 3 % of fuel.

Improved efficiency thanks to improved transmission ratios. A higher torque output makes longer ratios possible, especially in higher gears. For powerful torque in the low engine speed range which reduces fuel consumption, yet has no adverse effects on driving performance and sportiness.

Audi TDI engines: high torque output over the entire engine speed range – with constant power build-up. They are renowned for being fuel-efficient and for reducing emissions. The 3.0 TDI quattro, for example, has a power output of 200 kW, a top speed of 250 km/h (regulated) and accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 5.3 seconds.

Though no thicker than a human hair, the layer of paint on an Audi is actually made up of four different coats. In our view, millimetre precision is simply not enough to ensure you will still be able to enjoy your favourite colour for your Audi even after driving many thousands of kilometres. That is why we deliver precision on the micrometre scale, and why it takes top priority even for the primer coat. The first layer protects the body from rust and other symptoms of old age. The filler layer compensates for even the tiniest of irregularities and has an elastic effect, stopping the paint flaking off if for example gravel is thrown up. The third layer is the visible colour. Then comes a fourth layer of clear varnish, which protects the paint finish from UV rays and gives it a sheen and depth of colour that will ideally last for a long time – until you decide on a new favourite colour.

Audi Matrix LED headlightsthe innovative technology combines a camera system with LED light sources and precision optics for highly adaptive light distribution. The system blanks out light that would otherwise shine directly on oncoming vehicles or vehicles in front but continues to fully illuminate all the other areas in between and alongside. The main light functions performed when the vehicle is unlocked (coming home/leaving home), when the driving lights are activated and when the respective light distribution patterns are switched, as well as the control process when oncoming traffic passes by, are visible in the headlight as dynamic processes. The driver enjoys much greater visibility. The conventional division between dipped and high beam is almost eliminated. Familiar convenience functions such as the static turning light, all-weather light, junction light, and travel mode, which uses GPS data to switch between right and left-hand drive modes, are integrated into the LED technology. The LEDs of the Audi Matrix LED headlights also perform the dynamic cornering light functions. Using vehicle support based on navigation data, the cornering light function starts responding shortly before the steering wheel is turned. Distinctive features include the striking lighting pattern. The LED daytime running lights and dynamic indicators are implemented in the headlight in a single light guide with its homogeneous horizontal styling and together create the striking Audi lighting signature. LED rear lights also with dynamic indicators. Including headlight cleaning system and automatic-dynamic headlight range control

Bang & Olufsen 3D Sound Systemfascinating sound reproduction via 19 loudspeakers including 3D tweeters, mid-range loudspeakers, centre speaker and subwoofer. 16-channel amplifier has a total

output of 755 watts; speed-sensitive volume adjustment; spatial sound reproduction with the new sound feature 3D Sound for the front seats. This sound is created by means of additional loudspeakers in the A-pillar, the mid-range loudspeakers and the Fraunhofer technology Symphoria. The 3D sound can be generated with all sources, creating a uniquely authentic stereo and 3D surround sound experience in the vehicle. Symphoria adds to the dimensions which are indispensable for natural sound: breadth, depth and height. This creates a previously unknown feeling of space in the car. At the same time, the physical limits of the passenger cell also seem to disintegrate: the vehicle interior sounds larger, allowing music to unfold in its purest form.

Schematic representation of 3D sound: initially, the individual sound components within the audio signal are separated with the help of a semantic analysis process into direct sound, early reflection and echo. Then, the Symphoria algorithm, developed on the basis of Fraunhofer technology, intelligently distributes the separate audio objects within the vehicle without adding artificially generated elements. The result is high-quality 3D surround sound reproduction.

Audi smartphone interface³The Audi smartphone interface connects your smartphone to your Audi. Transfers your smartphone contents to the MMI display directly and seamlessly via USB. Legal notice regarding Audi connectUse of the services supported by Audi connect is possible only with the optional MMI navigation or MMI navigation plus with MMI touch and Audi connect. In conjunction with the optional equipment Audi phone box, a SIM card with telephone and data option or a Bluetooth-compatible smartphone with remote SIM Access Profile (rSAP)¹ is needed to use the integrated car phone function. The services are available only with an existing or separate mobile phone contract and only within the range of the respective mobile phone network. Additional costs may be incurred when receiving data packets from the internet, depending on the terms of your mobile phone contract, particularly when used abroad. Audi side assist²warns by means of an LED display on the relevant exterior mirror of any situations deemed critical for a lane change (e.g. overtaking vehicle in the blind spot). 2 radar sensors detect vehicles approaching from behind at the side and measure the distance and the difference in speed. The lane change assistant provides assistance between speeds of around 15 and 250 km/h.

Audi pre sense rear including Audi pre sense basiconly available in the assistance package City, controls Audi pre sense basic using additionally installed rear radar sensors in order to mitigate rear-end collisions within system limits. The front seat belts are pretensioned electrically as a precaution. Similarly, the windows and – if available – the slide-and-tilt glass sunroof start to close. The hazard warning lights are activated to flash at high frequency to warn the surrounding traffic.

Audi pre sense city²can detect vehicles and pedestrians in a speed range of up to approx. 85 km/h. If an imminent collision is detected, the system warns the driver visually, audibly and, where necessary, by means of a brake jolt, and can apply the brakes fully if needed in order to reduce the speed or, if possible, prevent the collision.

Programmable speed limiter²The driver can set a maximum speed limit, which is not exceeded even if the driver presses too firmly on the accelerator (e.g. useful for learner drivers or in countries with maximum speed limits on motorways). The vehicle gently governs the speed when the set limit is reached. The limiter can be deactivated at any time and overridden by kick-down. The LIM button on the multifunction lever can be used to toggle between the cruise control and the programmable speed limiter

Exit warningThe exit warning function is able to detect vehicles and cyclists approaching from behind when the vehicle is stationary and if necessary warn the occupants before they open a door. When opening the door, the passengers are warned by a lighting strip in the door along with the warning light in the exterior mirror from the Audi side assist.

Cross traffic assist rearThe cross traffic assist rear supports the driver when reversing out of a perpendicular parking space. The system informs the driver of detected approaching vehicles with an indicator in the MMI display and can, in especially critical situations, reinforce this warning with a warning tone and if necessary a brake jolt.

Audi pre sense basic²automatically initiates preventive occupant protection measures where necessary; these include: tensioning of the front seat belts to minimise occupants shifting forward or to the side, activation of the hazard warning lights and closure of the slide-and-tilt glass sunroof (if ordered) and windows; categorises driving situations by linking different vehicle systems

adaptive cruise controladaptive cruise control (ACC) automatically maintains distance from the vehicle in front in the control range from approximately 0 to 250 km/h. The system automatically brakes and accelerates to keep the set distance largely constant. Choose from 5 optional distance levels. In addition, the acceleration and control behaviour can be configured with Audi drive select. The Stop&Go function allows automatic braking to standstill and automatic restart when the driver wishes.

Traffic jam assistTraffic jam assist helps the driver with steering at speeds from approximately 0 to 65 km/h: working within system limits, the system detects lane markings, roadside structures, vehicles on adjacent lanes and multiple vehicles ahead. From this information, the system derives a virtual path, guiding the vehicle through this. Because it takes so many parameters into account, traffic jam assist makes it as easy and natural as possible to drive in congested traffic situations. Above approximately 65 km/h the Audi active lane assist

helps the driver to stay in lane.

Predictive efficiency assistantin conjunction with MMI navigation plus with MMI touch and head-up display, adaptive cruise control also uses the data from the predictive efficiency assistant for a predictive and adaptive speed control even when there are no vehicles ahead. To do this, the system uses the information about curve radii (curve assistant), town entrances and speed limits (speed limit assistant) stored in the navigation data. The system is supported by information from the camera-based recognition of traffic signs, which is also included. Moreover, the predictive efficiency assistant provides targeted control of coasting and freewheeling phases, thereby promoting fuel-saving driving even when adaptive cruise control is active.

Audi pre sense frontsupplements Audi pre sense city with a collision warning as well as partial and, if necessary, full braking action over the entire speed range up to approx. 250 km/h. Avoidance assistant provides additional support for the driver with supporting steering torque in critical evasive action situations. To this end, an avoidance path is determined on the basis of the distance to the vehicle ahead as well as its width and lateral offset.

Avoidance assistantactivated as soon as the system recognises an imminent collision and the driver initiates evasive action

Turning assistantWorking within system limits, the turning assistant detects oncoming vehicles in the opposite lane when turning left. If the system detects a critical situation during a turning manoeuvre, the vehicle brakes automatically. The system is activated once the driver operates the indicator and the vehicle is travelling between speeds of aproximately 2 and 10 km/h.

Operation of the adaptive cruise control via separate steering column stalk. Audi pre sense front can be deactivated via the MMI car menu.

Camera-based recognition of traffic signs¹camera-based recognition and display of overtaking bans and speed limits, including temporary speed limit displays (e.g. above motorways). Within system limits, the system also recognises the beginning and end of motorways, main roads, built-up areas and traffic restricted areas, displaying the relevant speed limit. In addition, a situation-dependent evaluation is

made when using a trailer (with a factory-fitted trailer towing hitch), and when encountering wet conditions, fog, or speed limits that vary depending on the time of day. If a traffic sign is located outside of the visual range of the camera, the information is called up from data stored on the optional navigation system. The traffic sign recognition automatically appears in the instrument cluster display or Audi virtual cockpit and can be configured with the multifunction steering wheel. Up to 3 traffic signs can be shown exclusively or the currently valid speed limit displayed as part of another system (e.g. digital speedometer). The system has a purely informative function. In the MMI it is also possible to select a traffic-sign-based warning if the detected speed limit is exceeded.

| Parking systems


Audi active lane assist¹helps the driver to keep comfortably in lane (operating range from approximately 60 to maximum 250 km/h). If the system is activated and ready and the driver has not activated an indicator, Audi active lane assist will guide the vehicle within recognised lane boundaries by means of gentle, corrective steering intervention. The driver can choose whether to be monitored continuously or just shortly before crossing the lane marker (choice of earlier or later steering points). Additional steering wheel vibration can be set if the driver wishes; including high-beam assist. In conjunction with MMI navigation, the system includes camera-based recognition of traffic signs.

Park assist¹uses ultrasonic sensors to search for suitable parking spaces along the side of the road and helps the driver to manoeuvre in and out of parking spaces by performing virtually autonomous steering actions. Calculates the ideal parking path for perpendicular parking spaces and the appropriate parking and exiting paths for kerb-side parking spaces. The driver has to accelerate, apply the brakes and monitor the parking process. The actual parking manoeuvre is performed by the system. The display of the surroundings warns the driver of objects in front of and behind the vehicle and, depending on the steering angle, obstacles at the sides. Parking in several moves is supported. Also optionally available with reversing camera or 360 degree cameras; activation via a button on the centre console; includes parking system plus

Reversing camera¹makes it easier to manoeuvre by showing the area behind the vehicle in the MMI display using dynamic and static aids. Choice of 2 modes (perpendicular parking mode and, with factory-fitted trailer towing hitch, trailer mode). Depending on the selected mode, the calculated driving path is displayed along with auxiliary markers and guidelines. The reversing camera is discreetly integrated into the handle of the luggage compartment lid. Activated when reverse gear is selected or via a button on the centre console.

Assistance package – Parking¹· 360 degree cameras· Park assist

The 4 wide-angle 360 degree cameras cover the entire area immediately around the vehicle, providing a range of different views for even easier manoeuvring:

· Reversing camera view: with aids for perpendicular parking and attaching trailers (with factory-fitted trailer towing hitch)

· Panorama view, front and rear: the nearly 180° view

makes it easier to pull out of narrow parking spaces, courtyard entrances or blind intersections

· Virtual overhead view: the images from the 4 cameras are combined to form a virtual overhead view ( bird’s-eye view). Allows more precise manoeuvring and positioning of the vehicle

| Driving dynamics/brakes


Audi drive selectdifferent modes – auto, comfort, dynamic, efficiency and individual – allow you to adjust the vehicle’s characteristics by adapting the power steering assistance, engine and gear-changing characteristics (with S tronic/tiptronic) and the settings of other optional equipment. The efficiency mode (available in certain countries only and for engines with 300 Nm or higher) shifts the engine, automatic transmission, climate control and the optional adaptive cruise control or cruise control to a more fuel-efficient basic setting. The individual mode is only available in conjunction with an MMI navigation system.

Dynamic suspensionprovides outstanding handling and exceptional driving comfort; with 5-link lightweight front axle; tubular anti-roll bar; front axle bearer bolted to the body; 5-link lightweight rear axle with independent wheel suspension; single-tube gas filled shock absorbers and coil springs; flexibly mounted rear axle bearer

Dynamic steeringwhen cornering, changing lanes or parking, for example, this system improves handling and ride comfort by dynamically regulating the steering according to the driving situation. In addition to adaption of the steering effort, the steering angle is also adapted (steering ratio). Vehicle stabilisation via ESC is further supported by the system’s lightning-quick steering movements. Only available in conjunction with Audi drive select

quattro®quattro permanent all-wheel drive with asymmetric/dynamic torque distribution through a self-locking centre differential and wheel-selective torque control. The system integrated in the Electronic Stabilisation Control (ESC) distributes the drive torque to all wheels depending on the driving situation via selective brake intervention. It actively countersteers on bends. This results in improved traction and dynamics when cornering and more precise and neutral handling (less understeer). Steering agility is also improved.

S tronic®The 7-speed, electrohydraulically actuated dual-clutch transmission facilitates faster gear changes with virtually no break in propulsive power. In automatic mode, the driver can choose between the programs D (Drive) and S (Sport). The S tronic can be operated manually via the selector lever or the shift paddles behind the steering wheel. Available for models with front-wheel drive and with quattro permanent all-wheel drive

Audi A4 Saloon and A4 Avant 2.0 TFSI ultra (140 kW from 109 g and 114 g CO₂/km).

The A4 2.0 TFSI ultra model is available with all equipment with no restrictions.

Audi A4 Saloon 2.0 TDI ultra (110 kW from 95 g CO₂/km with manual transmission and from 99 g CO₂/km with automatic transmission) and A4 Avant 2.0 TDI ultra (110 kW from 99 g CO₂/km)

This vehicle represents increased efficiency Audi models in which the balance between power and consumption has been improved even further. These Audi models are characterised by reduced consumption and CO₂ emissions when compared with standard models. This effect has been achieved by modifications to the vehicle.

The A4 Saloon and A4 Avant 2.0 TDI ultra models (110 kW) are fitted with the following as standard:

▪ 6-speed manual transmission with improved transmission ratio▪ also available as 7-speed S tronic automatic transmission▪ driver information system with gear change and efficiency displays; provides gear-changing

and fuel-saving tips to help the driver adopt a fuel-efficient driving style▪ swivelling radiator grille to optimise heat-up behaviour and aerodynamics▪ tyres with improved rolling resistance to allow fuel to be saved▪ improved ride height (thanks to sport suspension) and various vehicle components for

low drag coefficient

As standard the A4 Saloon and A4 Avant 2.0 TDI ultra models (110 kW) are equipped with forged lightweight wheels with full wheel covers, size 7 J x 16 with 205/60 R 16 tyres. Optionally, the following wheels are available to you:

² Unladen vehicle weight includes driver (75 kg) and fuel tank 90 % full, calculated in accordance with the current version of Reg. (EU) 1230/2012. Optional equipment may increase the car’s unladen weight and drag coefficient, whereupon the possible payload limit and the top speed will be reduced accordingly.

³ The engine’s power output always decreases with increasing altitude. At 1,000 m above sea level, and for every additional 1,000 m, deduct 10 % from the weight of the outfit (trailer load limit + gross weight of the towing vehicle). Figure for trailer load limit applies to factory-fitted trailer towing hitch. If using the vehicle with a trailer towing hitch for commercial purposes, a digital tachograph may be required under certain conditions.

For manufacturing reasons, these wheel surfaces do not have sufficient corrosion protection for such use and they can be permanently damaged by road salt or similar.

And of course it is always worth visiting one of the major motor shows. This is where Audi always presents its new models and invites you to take a look at how the future is being shaped with “Vorsprung durch Technik”. Anyone interested in seeing how Audi is already putting this into practice will find fascinating insight in the “Vorsprung durch Technik” online special at www.audi.com. But a look back can also be rewarding: at the Audi museum mobile in Ingolstadt, history and high-tech go hand in hand. A total of 130 historic exhibits and state-of-the-art forms

of presentation make for a thrilling symbiosis. Plus, Audi driving experience allows you to live the excitement and countless possibilities of current Audi models. Here, pure driving enjoyment is combined with valuable learning effects. This is ensured by a team of specially trained and highly qualified instructors who provide practical tips to help you optimise your driving skills. All this can now also be enjoyed at the recently opened Audi driving experience center in Neuburg, near Ingolstadt. Facilities here include a circuit of up to 3.4 kilometres that features challenging combinations of bends, a 30,000 m² dynamic driving area and an offroad section where Q models can be put through their paces.
