W elcome. Now for the third time, the Auckland Garden DesignFest

presents garden enthusiasts and anyone who appreciates a day out in beautiful surroundings with a unique opportunity to visit a wide range of professionally designed private gardens across Auckland. Unlike many garden tours, these gardens have never been open to the public before and most never will be again. The designers will be in their gardens to answer your questions and explain the incredible transformations these gardens have undergone to become what you see today.

Why have the owners so generously agreed to open their gardens? Because they really value the difference in lifestyle that their skilful designers have achieved for them, and also because they want to support our efforts in raising funds for three highly deserving children’s charities: Ronald McDonald House, Garden to Table and a range of children’s charities supported by the Rotary Club of Newmarket Charitable Trust. We invite you to take advantage of this totally fresh, inspirational, spring offering and hope you have a glorious weekend. Garden Design Society of New Zealand and the Rotary Club of Newmarket

2015 GARDENS TO VISIT

Sue & Colin McLean, Creation NZ Ltd23 Hauraki Rd, Takapuna

Sue and Colin’s brief to strip the backyard jungle and create ‘an enticing

courtyard environment in a contemporary style’ has transformed this

140m2 garden in a single year. An instant 3m high hedge provides privacy;

flowers, fragrance, fruit and vegetables burst from raised timber planters

and concrete drainage inspection cylinders; a sharply defined geometry of

deck, pebbles and tiling provides definition, while a black screen smothered

in star jasmine features a loved Indian door; a flowering cherry hovers

above, lavender, gardenias, roses and violets below and the service area

disappears behind. At night garden lighting transforms it into a

sophisticated, intimate, entertainment space.

Murray Reid, Reid Landscape Design 14 Green St, St Mary’s Bay

This garden is a fantastic example of a response to downsizing as it

preserves all the elements of a traditional backyard but in a smaller plot.

There is a seamless transition from the indoor to outdoor spaces, as the

garden was designed at the same time as the new living space. Referencing

the traditional backyard, the lawn dominates, complemented by a vegeta-

ble plot and vertical herb garden. Large planters give space for flowers and

there is a patio for entertaining in summer. The backyard shed has survived,

but with a modern twist. Planting is simple and hardy, giving the lushness

needed without monopolising space.

Installation: Reid Landscapes

Nigel Cameron, Cameron Landscape Design37 Castor Bay Rd, Castor Bay

Having noticed Nigel’s work in various publications over a number of

years, the owner of this garden called him in September 2013. A complete

clear-out was required as the existing garden was overgrown, with tree

roots getting into drains and house foundations. Exterior paving in 80’s

salmon pink tiles was also too high for interior floor levels. The brief was

for an artistic garden with a vibrant subtropical atmosphere. Recognising

the clients’ love of boats and the magnificent sea view, Nigel set about

creating sculptural giant propellers and the sea-wall effect of gabion walls.

Installation: Cameron Landscape Design Ltd

Maintenance: Humphreys Landscaping

Karen Wealleans, Changing Spaces Ltd1/19 Milford Rd, Milford

Karen’s first impressions of this townhouse courtyard were of an

overpowering Phoenix palm and a few non-descript plants. Over several

years, she has worked with the owner, a keen gardener, to develop the

courtyard in stages. The garden space is now divided into ‘rooms’ for

dining and lounging, a spa pool area, vegetables and a service area. There

is an eclectic mix of plants – over 25 species – but the overall impression is

one of massed planting, peace and tranquillity. Outdoor sofas and planters

complete the courtyard and a contemporary glazed metallic Burrelli pot

provides a dramatic sculptural element.

Robin Shafer, Shafer Design Ltd1 Stack St, Herne Bay

Designed around one of Herne Bay’s most beautiful corner villas, this

garden is filled with a comprehensive collection of plants which form an

elegant response to the architecture. A walk through the gardens takes

you from a flower-filled traditional garden to a tropical shady oasis under

giant pohutukawa through to a small edible garden and a family play lawn.

Structural planting forms gentle architectural framework while the texture

and colours of the planting create a romantic setting. Scented plants

include a multitude of gardenias, star jasmine, daphne, heliotrope, rosemary,

Port wine magnolia, Mexican orange blossom and Meyer lemons.

Trudy Crerar, Trudy Crerar & Associates Ltd7 Renall St, Freemans Bay

Set in one of Auckland’s most historic streets, Trudy settled on a Moorish

garden designed to seduce the senses for this small courtyard. Inspired by

a Moroccan tent, the arbour replicates the roof pitch of the cottage, while

the gilded stone fountain offers reflections of gold light by night, and by

day, cooling relief. The depth of space is belied with patterned screens and

artwork, woven in with ‘cut-out’ glimpses of oranges and pomegranates

beyond. Although formal, with oversized pots of topiary and espaliered

walls, scented roses, gardenia, star jasmine and citrus provide an arresting

distraction for this oasis of calm.

Installation: Craftsman Gardener Services

Trudy Crerar, Trudy Crerar & Associates Ltd10 Sentinel Rd, Herne Bay

To unravel the best of its original features, this 1930’s deco house required

a sympathetic garden design. The front garden is ‘on show’, although

in time the port-wine magnolia hedge will create a little more privacy,

supported by floriferous crab apples. With its simple, functional layout

of split-level lawns, vegetable patch and flower beds, this sassy garden

works well for a family of teenagers and parents who are keen gardeners

with farming roots. (Spot the sheep trough!) Note the Italian Cypress and

pleached Callery pear trees. Swathes of iris and foliage plants provide

subjects for the owner’s love of ikebana.

Installation: Craftsman Gardener Services

Jo Hamilton, Joanna Hamilton Landscape Design 30 Kelmarna Ave, Herne Bay

By using natural systems, companion planting and species attractive to bird

life, Jo has created the ‘naturalistic journey’ requested by the owners of this

much-loved transitional villa. From the elevated deck at the back, through

the garden to a new self-contained studio, two circular ‘mirror’ lawns balance

raised vegetable gardens and espaliered fruit trees on the other side. The

sensory experience of being immersed in the garden is heightened in high

summer when the productive vegetable garden overflows with beans on

tripods and tall swaying flower heads, planted specifically to bring bees and

other pollinators, giving height and exuberance.

Trish Bartleet, Trish Bartleet Landscape Design 30 Regina St, Westmere

Trish worked alongside architect, Jack McKinney, and the clients when

designing the landscaping for this new house. Having lived on the

property for a number of years, they wanted to keep some of the palms

in the back garden, a nikau in the courtyard plus a mature titoki tree in

the front. To develop the tropical Balinese feeling the clients hoped would

complement the existing palms, Trish designed a pool with recessed

planters to break up its rigid rectangular structure and added a fish pond

between the courtyard and the house. The result is a unique, tropical

resort-like atmosphere.

Installation: KD Construction, Morgan Pools

Xanthe White, Xanthe White Design1a Watling St, Mt Eden

This elegant and playful garden - a collaboration between Xanthe and

the owner, an interior designer, went through three design renditions.

To express the ‘wonderfulness’ of the house within and create a visually

generous connection with the neighbourhood, it is essentially turned

inside out, with much of the colour and folly on offer for all to enjoy. The

pool garden is the main living space, while the back garden extends the

classroom, with fruit trees, potagers and a playful greenhouse for the

children, who are home-schooled. Furnishings and bold wall colours created

a playful background for Xanthe to work from.

Installation and maintenance: Justin Hurt11

Barbara Garrett, Barbara Garrett Planting Design Ltd 31 Maungakiekie Ave, One Tree Hill

Although hedges provide privacy from the street and neighbours, dramatic

view shafts from both house and garden enhance the feeling that Cornwall

Park and One Tree Hill extend from the property. Features include a dining

terrace with outdoor fireplace, an enclosed pool area and an allée of large

Portugal laurels that draw the eye to the gate into the park. An informal

grouping of large trees set in lawn mimics the park beyond, while a garden

shed and lemon tree planters are cleverly tucked in. An internal courtyard

with its own Boston ivy-covered fireplace is an additional feature.

Installation: Strass Landscape Developers Ltd, Tranquility Pools

Planting and maintenance: Barbara Garrett12

Sue & Colin McLean & Associates, Creation NZ Ltd 3 Lynch St, Pt Chevalier

In order to sympathetically enhance the simplicity of the architecture

(two black boatsheds) and the unspoilt beauty of the waterfront site, Sue

and Colin have gathered the property from the sides and allowed it to

flow naturally down to the water. Native plants now attract birds, while a

series of steps incorporating a productive planter with citrus and feijoas

leads to a large lounging deck for communing with the ever-changing

tidal view. A timber boardwalk has been added and a large bank tumbling

to the sea has been cleared of bamboo and weed species to enable

access with kayaks.

Phillip Millar117a St Stephens Ave

The Millars’ small, west-facing, urban site has its challenges, shady in

the mornings and sunny in the afternoons. Driven by a keen curiosity

for plants worldwide – particularly tropical rainforest plants, Phillip has

planted it over 23 years, but there is a definite ‘His and Hers’ aspect to the

garden – Anne’s is filled with flowering plants, vegetables and herbs – all

in pots. Purple beans, strawberries, capsicums, aubergines, tomatoes and

cucumbers are favourites. “All easy to grow in pots,” says Phillip, “but you

have to water every day.” His: subtropical palms and bromeliads, but he’s

also fallen in love with hydrangeas again.

Trudy Crerar, Trudy Crerar & Associates Ltd42 Glanville Tce, Parnell

Unlike any of its neighbours, this established New Zealand native garden

is totally unique and yet thoroughly at home here. The design reflects a

20-year relationship with clients who have become close family friends

and are prepared to trust their designer to take them to a new level of

experience. High retaining walls on the periphery presented a challenge,

with a desire to create a dynamic progressive space. The clients’ love of NZ

bush inspired Trudy to use the changing levels as platforms for cascading

ferns, while Chatham Island nikau rise up from the serpentine ‘forest floor’

to belie building heights.

Installation: Trudy Crerar & Associates Ltd

Bryan McDonald, Auckland Landscapes1/48 Arney Rd, Remuera

In contrast to traditional Remuera gardens of the 90’s, Bryan came up with

an outdoor gallery theme with a structured planting style for this courtyard

garden. By using a series of grids, the hard landscape elements mirror and

exaggerate the joinery and angular lines of the architecture. Combined with

boundary walls of varying textures, the result is a series of unconventional

connecting spaces, or outdoor rooms, linked to the interiors. Outdoor

sculptures and art pieces are deliberately framed within the landscape. An

installation of cube planters was added more recently to provide scope for

edibles within the art yard concept.

Installation: Auckland Landscapes

Tony Murrell, Tony Murrell Garden Design Ltd 116 Arney Rd, Remuera

Tony focussed on every aspect of this site’s location, including sun range and

the fact that the largest garden space was relatively close to the main road.

He wanted to give the owner a sense of connection with the neighborhood

as she requested - as it was important to her that people would still be able

to enjoy seeing the seasonal changes within, but also reduce road noise and

provide privacy. By sinking the front gardens a mere couple of steps and

encircling the space with hedging, both of these requirements were soon

achieved in warm, welcoming, earthy-toned paving.

Tony Murrell, Tony Murrell Garden Design Ltd209 Victoria Ave, Remuera

Tony was called in here to help with filling in the pool to create more garden

and lawn. Now more than five years old, it looks far more established than

that. The newly positioned front gate opens to reveal three distinctive

rooms: a processional walk down steps to a rose arbour, a formal parterre

with a grid layout of dragon stone ‘Tulip pots’ and a rectangular lawn

flanked with classic topiary and perennials. A love of the colour yellow is

immediately evident in the glorious roses and warm reflective shade of the

house, providing the perfect foil for green plants.

Robin Shafer, Shafer Design Ltd46a Kohimarama Rd, Kohimarama

This resort-style garden and swimming pool was built in 2013 to

complement a magnificent new home on a very tight site overlooking the

Hauraki Gulf. The design is a clever response to the restricted space and

features a large, contemporary, designed pool and spa incorporating moats,

floating stepping stones and a glass edge. Enclosed spaces have been

created using hedging and evergreen trees to create private areas in a very

exposed site. Flower-filled garden beds include Gordonia ‘Moonlight Magic’,

hydrangeas, Camellia ‘Mini-no-yuki’, day lilies, osmanthus and plumbago.

Installation: MDS - Masonry Design Solutions and Morgan Pools

Maintenance: Christine Ramage, East West Landscapes19

Robin Shafer, Shafer Design Ltd17 Glen Atkinson St, St Heliers

This formal garden is a response to the classical Georgian house circa 1934.

Heritage architect and interior designer, Stephen Cashmore, was involved in

sympathetically integrating the two adjoining houses and reclaiming part of

the original gardens. Axial walkways encourage strolling and lead through

several different garden areas featuring immaculate lawns, a variety of

structured hedges and topiaries, rose-covered pergola, rose garden and

several water features. Five bronze urns were shipped over from Rhode

Island, Newport. The restrained plant palette creates a serene garden

experience. The owners have been involved throughout and have

planted the majority of the garden themselves.

Mark Read & Richard Neville, Natural Habitats 12A Lingarth St, Remuera

A tricky, tight site, but with huge potential has been transformed into a

magical space with a resort-like atmosphere. From the entrance courtyard

to the stream that runs through the back of the site, Mark Read and Richard

Neville maximised vistas and created an opportunity to go beyond the

outdoor living space by manipulating the line of the existing deck to make it

more useable and pull the tropical paradise closer. A feature bridge forms a

focal point and an invitation to explore, while strategically placed rocks allow

the children to feed the tame eels in the creek.
