Think You Know Cyber Safety and Social Media Parent Information Session I highly encourage our Parents and Community members to attend this extremely important information session on Cyber safety and Social Media matters. This is a huge problem in our society today as many new social media and technology elements are being used by our children often without them fully understanding the dangers hidden within. I urge you as a parent to attend to be aware of these dangers and how to safe guard your child/ren. Information session is this Wednesday 22 August starting at 6pm in the Administration block. I look forward to seeing you at the “Think you Know” Information session being run by Queensland Police.

Kind Regards David

From the Deputy Principal

What an exciting week ahead! This week is ‘Book Week’! Our students are involved in a range of activities this week to celebrate. Teachers are reading to children in the library and we have our super exciting Parade on Wednesday morning in the hall at 9am. Please join us!

Also on Wednesday evening is our Think U Know parent information session. Technology plays an important role in how young people maintain their friendships and communicate with those closest to them. Technology is no different to anything else a young person encounters. They will make mistakes, and we need to be able to support them through this and arm them with the right information, and empower them to make the right choices. These sessions are designed to give you the information you need to support your child. The session is at 6pm in the Admin Block. We look forward to seeing you there.

A huge congratulations to 3S for their outstanding engagement in their music lessons. 3S has been working on their ukulele skills. They have shown focus, determination, resilience and most importantly they have been having a whole lot of fun! Mrs T is super proud as are we all. Keep up the great work 3S!

If you have a child in Prep-Yr 2 you will receive a flyer this week with all the information you need to know for our very exciting Under 8’s Spring Celebration! Everyone is welcome and we encourage you to bring along your younger children too! It is an RSVP event information is in the flyer.

ICAS certificates have started to arrive. Once the Year 5 camps are completed we will notify you as to the date of the Parade in which they will be awarded to our students.

‘Because of her we can’ was this year’s NAIDOC theme. In celebration of the theme each student in our school traced their hand and wrote a note of what they can know do because of an important woman in their lives. The hands have been placed at the back of our hall and are beautiful. A huge thank you to our friends Mrs M and her merry helpers for finishing our beautiful instillation.

Parents/Carers are requested to advise Fernvale State School if your child’s Asthma diagnosis is current. If your child’s Asthma diagnosis is current, please provide the school with an updated Asthma Action Plan if they require assistance to administer their medication and/or if their emergency response is complex. It is important Asthma Action Plans are updated annually. Requirements for students at risk of asthma If your child has asthma and requires assistance to administer their medication, it is important for you to provide the school with your child’s emergency medication and their Asthma Action Plan, completed by your doctor. An Asthma Action Plan provides specific instructions for the school to administer your child’s medication. We recognise that some students are capable of managing their asthma without adult assistance. If you are confident that your child can confidently, competently and safely self-administer their asthma medication, let the school administration know. The school will record your decision and will not require your child’s Asthma Action Plan. Please note that if your child requires assistance in an asthma emergency, staff will provide Asthma First Aid. Thank you for assisting Fernvale State School in supporting your child’s health needs.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact the school.

Other School Matters

If your child requires staff to administer medication to your child at school, please contact the school office in the first instance to discuss your child’s requirements. Please note, school staff will only administer medication that:

has been prescribed by a qualified health practitioner (e.g. doctor, dentist)

is in its original container

has an attached pharmacy label

The Department recognises that all medications, including over-the-counter (OTC) medications, e.g. paracetamol or alternative medicines, may be drugs or poisons and may cause side effects. As such, schools are required to receive medical authorisation from a prescribing health practitioner (e.g. doctor, dentist, optometrist, but not a pharmacist) to administer any medication to students, including those bought over-the-counter. Whilst parents may administer OTC medications to their child without medical authorisation, they are aware of the child’s complete medical history, and are able to provide ongoing, direct supervision for the course of the child’s illness. Due to these circumstances, a parent is also more likely to recognise if their child is having adverse effects and requires immediate medical attention. The student’s prescribing health practitioner also has the knowledge of the child’s medical history to determine the appropriate OTC medication to administer and is therefore able to determine dosage and provide advice regarding potential side effects or interactions with other medications. For these reasons, OTC medications will only be administered to students at school if medical authorisation has been received. A letter from a parent to administer medication will not suffice if medical authorisation cannot be

confirmed. Please be advised that until medical authorisation can be confirmed, if you wish your child to

receive medication during school hours, you will have to attend the school to take the responsibility for its

administration.

School staff are bound by these regulations and we hope that all parents will acknowledge and cooperate

with these rules.
