Every year, we wonder if this might be thelast photo shoot for Scooter, the originalSNIPSA dog. Scooter was returned notonce but twice and eventually landed ahome with SNIPSA’s founders in 2005. Thiswiry Benji breed has brought great joy to hisfamily, served as the mascot for countlessSNIPSA events, and whose Hollywoodglam decks the walls at the SNIPSA office. If we could clone this fun-loving mixed breedwe would — a 1,000 times over! If wewould have known that leaving him aloneon that first Christmas Eve would haveresulted in the mass destruction of everygrass shade in the bedroom, we may havesurrendered him, too. If we would havehad a crystal ball to know how instrumentalhe would be in raising four children, we wouldhave made him the official nanny.

We share this to bring attention to the“senior dog.” When considering adoption, please consider an older pet. They areoften the first to be overlooked and thefirst to be euthanized in shelters. They arealso some of the first to be surrendered bytheir owners — replaced with younger, more spry pups.

However, owning a senior dog has manyadvantages: • Senior pets have graduated from their

search and destroy phase — you canleave your favorite purse and shoes onthe floor without a worry

• What you see is what you get — thereare no surprises to size, length of fur, color, or temperament

• Senior pets make great companionsfor senior citizens — not only do theyprovide unconditional love but also asense of purpose for their caretaker.

• Older dogs have manners — they aretypically housebroken and know basicobedience making an easy transition toan indoor home

• Adopted pets are grateful for yourkindness — older pets seem to knowyou’ve provided them with a secondchance when someone else has givenup on them.

• Less need for exercise — not only dosenior dogs walk at a slower pace, theyalso travel less distance. Their interestand constant sniffing of the worldaround them serves as a reminder forus to slow down, too.

• Old dogs can learn new tricks — olderdogs have longer attention spans thanpuppies making them easier to train.

• Shouldn’t have to be alone — everypet deserves to have someone withthem as they take their last breath.

Each year, our favorite dog bakery, PAWsitively Sweet Bakery, has a movie premiere fundraiser. The money raised from the event is given to an organization of their choice. Guess who was their chosen recipient this past summer? You guessed it. SNIPSA! The Secret Life of Pets played to a sold out crowd in June 2016. Thanks to the generosity of allthose present, as well as PAWsitively Sweet Bakery, SNIPSA received a check for just over$1,600. Their contribution will be used to extend our mission to even more dogs and cats inour community. We are “pawsitively” thankful for the incredible gift!

Your support and belief in SNIPSA’slife-saving mission has enabled us torescue and re-home more than 7,500animals and sterilize over 9,500through our spay/neuter outreach.

Special Thanks

HOW HAVE WE DONE THIS?Through a dedicated group of volunteers, veterinarians, staff, andcommunity partners that are committed to improving the lives ofhomeless animals in the Alamo city.

WHAT SETS THE SNIPSA MODEL APART?It’s a grassroots effort going door to door and backpack to backpackto solicit our appointments in targeted zip codes predeterminedby Animal Care Services. We use a large gymnasium or communitycenter to accommodate any size, breed, and gender of dog or cat.

HOW DO WE INCREASE COMPLIANCE? By offering free service on a Saturday within walking distance ofthe pet owner’s home. There is also no additional charge for pain medications, vaccinations, or microchips which can be a financialburden for folks with multiple pets. This is often a pet’s first andonly time to see a veterinarian during its life.

HOW MANY ANIMALS ARE TREATED DURING A BIG FIX?Approximately 325. Rumor has it we’ve done more.

HOW MUCH DOES EACH CLINIC COST?Roughly $25,000 – approximately $75 per animal.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS?The more lives saved in the community, the less lives entering theshelters. The less lives entering the shelters, the greater the savingsto tax payers. Most importantly, it is the most effective means tomake a sustainable difference in the lives of our companion animals.

WHAT CAN YOU DO TO HELP?Volunteer at one of our Big Fix clinics or sponsor the surgery of aBig Fix appointment. Or do both!

WHAT’S OUR MOTTO?Come early…stay late!

Approaching seven years of Big Fix clinics, SNIPSA has provided over 9,000 (yes…9,000!) FREE spay/neuter,vaccination, and micro-chipping services for underserved areas of San Antonio.

SavingLivesSeeing homeless animals in our community when visiting San Antonio can be aneye opener. This was especially true for two New Yorkers vacationing in theAlamo city. After a day of museum visits and Riverwalk fun, a lone pup walked upto them. An old rope was tied around his hairless neck, his body covered head totoe in scabs and sores from demodectic mange and neglect. They kept the littleguy close to their side and called every one they could think of: police dispatch, local animal shelters, and countless rescue groups. A couple of hours after theirfirst meeting, the short and stout Porter walked through SNIPSA’s doors.Seemingly unaware of his physical state and his hard luck, he pranced into ouroffice with tail wagging and head held high. After many medicated baths, antibioticsand lots of love, his transition from San Antonio stray to beloved pet was seamless. With every tuft of fur that slowly comes back, Porter becomes more and morethe pup he was meant to be — the happy and playful Porter House.

Maeby suffered some hard knocks. Neglected and ill, her owners surrenderedher to Animal Care Services. SNIPSA saved her and committed to getting herwell. She was sullen, scared and afraid of human touch. After some observation,it was decided she was in pain. Foul-smelling discolored urine led to the diagnosisof bladder stones. The stones were so large they had displaced her bladder. The treatment: surgical removal of the stones, antibiotics, and a special diet.

After a full recovery, the true Maeby started to slowly come alive. No longer thetimid girl, she loved tagging along with her foster dad to dog-friendly spots. It was atone such restaurant that she met her adoptive family. There was an instant connectionas Maeby’s golden tail couldn’t stop wagging and her new mom couldn’t stop smiling.

Today, you won’t find Maeby hiding in a corner. Instead, she’s front and center onher family’s social media hamming it up for the crowd. Proof that a little extra loveand never-give-up attitude can transform a hopeless pup to the terrific family dog.

When a young and puny Frisco was brought into our program, we knew hewould quickly become healthy. However, as days went by, he did not get anyhealthier. He could not keep food down and soon became lethargic. We realized thatFrisco was puny for a more serious reason. He suffered from megaesophagus.

Megaesophagus is a life-threatening condition where the esophagus loses muscletone and remains enlarged rather than contracting when eating. Because of this, foods and liquids cannot make their way into the stomach. This was causingFrisco to regurgitate every time he ate. The only solution was to build a platformwhere Frisco could eat upright allowing gravity to move the food to the stomach.

We at SNIPSA never give up on an animal, so it wasn’t long before, little by little,Frisco began to put on weight. With the help of a committed adoptive family, thistenacious boy fought his way to become a typical kitty — chasing insects, climbingtrees, and napping on his favorite sofa. Yay, Frisco! We knew you could do it.

TurboOne early quiet morning at the SNIPSA office, the front door gently opened andin scooted a little cardboard box. Nothing unusual really, as we are blessed toreceive donated items throughout the week. However, donations don’t cause abox to move! We peaked over the top of the box and there sat little hairlessTurbo. He clearly had mange, his skin red as a tomato and he stunk to high heaven. He was in dire need of medical attention. After some TLC, medical treatmentand nutrition, this tiny naked pup stole the heart of his adopted mom, Erica.

Turbo definitely lives up to his name. The little guy has gotten most of his hairback and has a lot of energy and I do mean a lot! Most puppies will play hard for10-15 minutes and then sleep for an hour. Not Turbo! He is non-stop action andplays for about an hour and then rests for 5 minutes, then back at it again. Turboloves to cuddle when he is quiet and resting, not to mention the one-on-one attention. His siblings, Remy (another SNIPSA rescue), Petunia, Freckles, and Cottonlove him too! ––– Erica

MaebyThe beginning of Maeby’sstory is on the previous pagein Saving Lives. We’ve neverbefore done a crossoverstory, but we love sharingour happy endings and thisis a picture-perfect happyending indeed!

Maeby has been the sweetest and most wonderful dog. Herfoster dad told me “there is no perfect dog, but Maeby is prettyclose!” Wow, was he right. I never have had any doubts that shebelongs with me. She is sweet, cuddly, and has a sense of humor.Even though she’s a dog, she’s my family here in San Antoniowhile the rest of them are in Dallas. I prayed for a dog like her tocome into my life. She is more of a blessing than I ever couldhave expected. Cheers to my sweet new pup! ––– Kaitlyn”

Ophelia (now Pepper)After being struck by a car, Miss Ophelia found herself at a local shelter with afractured leg and a terrible infection due to a piece of bone that had becomenecrotic. She also had heartworms! Orthopedic pins were placed in her tibiaand she required an extended course of antibiotics. Her devoted foster momdrove her to our office for weekly bandage changes. She now lives the goodlife with two children dressing her in costume, sleeping on her “flower” pillow, and taking a dip in the water tank on hot summer days.

We love having Pepper at our house out in the country. Our kids love to playwith her and work on training or teaching her tricks. My daughter has especiallybecome attached to her. Pepper is the perfect inside dog and is amazing with allthe kids in our family. We are very grateful to have found SNIPSA and appreciateeverything they did to save Pepper’s leg. ––– The Bartons

SNIPSA’s 9th Annual Race for the Rescueswas another grand success with more than850 participants joining together with theirdogs to run, walk, or stroll the Alamo

Heights course. But the fun didn’t end at the finish line. There weretreats, music, and festivities for everyone — Kiolbassa sausagewraps, gourmet iced coffee from Rosella, watermelon lemonadefrom the Good Kind, face painting and balloon twisting from localartists, and our signature doggy pool avenue where tuckered outpups could take a break or swim (whichever the case may be!).Hank, a middle-aged dachshund, garnered more than $6,000 forhis fellow “street brothers,” beating out 13 other contestants to winSNIPSA’s Face of the Race. In all, we raised more than $100,000!

We at SNIPSA extend our most sincere thank you to our sponsors, racers, and SNIPSA fans for continuing to support our annualfundraiser year after year. We would not be the success we arewithout each one of you.

Green Dog Kennel owners, Andre and Lola Crane, started this event toraise awareness about the importance of spaying and neutering. This year’scelebration raised over $6,000 to support SNIPSA’s Big Fix outreach.More than 50 runway-ready costumed pups took to the stage to provethey had what it takes to be crowned the winner. It was a tight contestbetween Chicken Poodle Soup and Tux “Prince” the Pomeranian, withTux taking the grand prize. The purple-clad pooch took a victory lap to thetune of Purple Rain on his very own custom purple motorcycle. Thank you,Green Dog Kennels and all those that supported another Dia de Los Perros!
