Atlas Map: Native American Population Loss, 1500-1700

Population density for Native American groups at about 1500 is difficult to estimate because scholars strongly disagree about the size of America's population just before European contact. They also disagree about the area that should be assigned to each culture area. Does this map suggest that distance from the points of European contact was an important variable in determining population loss in various culture areas?
