However, most scholars agree that the season was codified for the Christian church at the Council of Nicea in 325 a.d. Today, regardless of the practices an individual observes, most Christians agree that Lent is a season of self- examination, contemplation, and repentance that encourages us to be keenly aware of God’s presence in our daily lives.

OBSERVING LENT

The etymology of the word, Lent, tells us that in English, the word is a short form of the word lengthen, indicating the lengthening of days in the springtime. About three weeks ago, I spoke with our nephew, Peter Wharry, who lives in Fairbanks, Alaska. Earlier, he had texted us a picture of the sun’s rays shining through a window with the caption, “Light is back!” HIs excitement helped me to better appreciate how much the lengthening of days was and is welcomed in some parts of the world. So much so that our forebears even named this season after this seasonal event. The joy that accompanies the increase of light each day reminds us of how much we thirst after the light of Christ in our lives. And while we often think about Lent as a somber season, we cannot deny that it ushers in the promise of new life and hope.

The Greek and Latin words for Lent are rooted in the words expressing the number 40. While a few European languages also share the root meaning of the English reference toward the spring season, most European languages have the number 40 reflected in their words for Lent. Anyone familiar with scripture can cite some of the reasons for the importance of the number 40.

An on-line article entitled Lent and published in Wikipedia cites these biblical references for the occurrence of the number 40 in scripture:

• Moses spent 40 days on Mount Sinai with God (Exodus 24:18).

• Elijah spent 40 days and nights walking to Mount Horeb (1 Kings 19:8).

• God sent 40 days and nights of rain in the great flood of Noah (Genesis 7:4).

• The Hebrew people wandered 40 years in the desert while traveling to the Promised Land (Numbers 14:33).

• Jonah's prophecy of judgment gave 40 days to the city of Nineveh in which to repent or be destroyed (Jonah 3:4).

• Jesus retreated into the wilderness, where He fasted for 40 days, and was tempted by the devil (Matthew 4:1–2, Mark 1:12–13, Luke 4:1–2). He overcame all three of Satan's temptations by citing scripture to the devil, at which point the devil left him, angels ministered to Jesus, and He began His ministry. Jesus further said that His disciples should fast "when the bridegroom shall be taken from them" (Matthew 9:15), a reference to his Passion.

The history of the origin of Lent and lenten practice is long and complex.

Observing Lent…continued from page 2…

Here at FPCP, the observance of Lent began with the Ash Wednesday service on March 6th. As in the past, the Sunday before Ash Wednesday, the youth participated in the burning of the dried palm branches saved from the Palm Sunday worship service in 2018. The remaining ashes were mixed with anointing oil and used to make the sign of the cross on our foreheads during the Ash Wednesday service. This powerful symbolism speaks for itself.

The Discipleship Ministry has provided Lenten devotional materials for everyone, and those are available in the narthex. For those who would like to participate, we will again provide a plastic bag and simple instructions for “decluttering” one item each day as a way of simplifying our lives, preparing for the spring garage sale, and, most importantly, being reminded of God’s constant presence in all that we do, every single day.

As in past years, Holy Week will include Palm Sunday Worship, a special Maundy Thursday Communion Service, and Good Friday Worship led by Rhonda Haskins. On Holy Saturday, the sanctuary will be open all day for prayer. Check the newsletter and the weekly Fridge Notes for all the details for these important events in our church community. May the peace of Christ reign in our hearts as we journey through this sacred season.

Yours in Christ, Chére Wharry

Presbyterian Women News for AprilOur lesson for the Tuesday April 9th Presbyterian Women’s meeting is titled “God with Us as the Holy Spirit”. The lesson book is “God’s Promise-I am with You” by Amy Poling Sutherlun and the lessons have been such a blessing to hear. The Morning Circle meets at 10 am and the Bible moderator will be Susan Wallace with Jean Johnston as hostess serving refreshments. The Night Circle meets at 7 pm and the Bible moderator will be Imelda Carrillo with Barbara Davis and Donna Coe as hostesses serving refreshments. It is such a joy to hear and discuss the different views that we get from the lesson. Please come join us at either or both meetings and enjoy the wonderful fellowship that we have together. Also, as a gentle reminder, our May14th meeting will be a joint covered dish meeting. Night Circle will still be having an evening meeting. More about May meetings in the May newsletter.

Young at Heart met on a glorious, sunshiny Spring day (in Pasadena) on third Thursday, March 21. Our group was sparse because of the air quality control warning in Deer Park.

But there were 9 hearty, fearless folks who attended: Ruth A., Joannie K., Dee L., Jamie and Heather J., Jean J., Nell L., Kay G., and your been-around-too-long-anyway leader, Joan.

We certainly missed two of our favorite members, Ann and Elois, who have broken hips and are now in rehab. I know they are close, but this is ridiculous. We miss you and Jackie B. who continues to convalesce at Bayou Manor. We send our prayers for healing for all those who are in pain.

The devotional was about God being ever present and watching over us. We talked about the upcoming trips with Senior Saints of St. Stephen Presbyterian Church. April 16, is a bus trip to the San Felipe State Historical Site, Museum, Painted church, and hopefully Bluebonnets! Call Sandy or Bryan Campbell at 281-392-2485 to sign up. $25 including meal.

Some of us played Hand and Foot, some folks just talked! H and F people are devoted card players. Chickenfoot….not so much!

Maybe because they weren’t there!

Our food was just right from meatloaf to beans and rice and plenty of fruit and desserts! So there was plenty of food and fellowship to go around.

Join us next month on third Thursday at 10 a.m. April 18th…for a few hours of food and fellowship, a Chickenfoot game, and no more scary warnings.

READING BIBLICAL LITERATURE Pat Abrams, Bride’s Room at 9:00 am

Our class is currently studying the Gospel of Luke with “Luke for Everyone” by N. T. Wright. To study the Bible from a literary perspective is definitely different, and adds greatly to understanding and applying God’s Word to our everyday lives. Come join us as we ‘Step Out in Faith” as Jesus would lead.

Practicing Our Faith: A Way of Life for a Searching People, Room 11 at 9 am “An Altar in the World” by Barbara Brown Taylor

Taylor reveals meaningful ways to discover the sacred in the small things we do and see, from simple practices such as walking, working, and prayer. As we incorporate these practices into our daily lives, we begin to discover altars everywhere we go, in nearly everything we do. Through Taylor’s expert guidance and delicate, thought-provoking prose, we learn to live with purpose, pay attention, slow down, and practice reverence.

FPC CLUSTER SHEPHERD GROUPS & C0-SHEPHERDS 2019The FPC Cluster shepherd groups are linked together so members will find themselves in only one group. The emphasis is on the group itself, with two caring and connecting church officers as support. The Deacon and Elders each have distinct roles, but the officers will work in harmony as co-shepherds to care for and help build relationships within the group. Simply put, the primary call of a Deacon is one of pastoral care, while the Elder’s primary call is to govern and communicate current happenings in the life of the church, including deaths. Of course, both Deacons and Elders are called to stay in touch with their flock, connecting and encouraging those entrusted to their care, so there will be some overlap. As Christians, we are all called to be the presence of Christ for one another. Our hope is that there will be connections made within the flock, so that members within each cluster shepherd group will also know and support one another. The co-shepherds are from the same class. That way they will serve as partners for their entire term of service. This helps with consistency and in group building. We are excited about the possibilities of this simplified partnership. It brings a new dimension to the hymn, “Called as Partners in Christ’s Service.”Below are the cluster partners, reflecting the new officer shepherds. A bulletin board in the hallway visually reflects the arrangement.
