WELCOME

Dear colleagues and friends,

It is a great pleasure and honour for Paediatric Cardiology in Austria welcoming you to the 44th Annual Meeting of the Association of European Paediatric Cardiology in Innsbruck.

Being a small country in the middle of Europe we are very proud giving the opportu-nity to connect Europe’s East and West.

The scientifi c programme follows the general themes “Quality of life - ethical issues – intercultural aspects”.

You will fi nd those addressed within the Joint sessions, key note lectures and Working Group sessions.

The oral abstract sessions as well as the Poster presentations will give a representa-tive overview of the latest innovations and results accomplished by the international scientifi c community. Presenters and participants come from all over the world and will create a dynamic and exhilarating atmosphere for discussion, networking and socialising.

We are very happy to have for the fi rst time representatives of the Japanese Society of Paediatric Cardiology and Cardiac Surgery as Guest faculty with us, enriching the programme with their contributions!

The Update course by the WG Dysrhythmia and Electrophysiology and the Hands-on session by the WG Morphology cover the educational part of the programme.

The programme gives also room for all specialists, including Nurses, we are working with to show the role Paediatric Cardiology has to play in managing our patients throughout the life cycle.

Innsbruck, the wonderful place in the Alps is not only a very scenic but cultural and historical site too. As host of two Olympic Winter Games, Innsbruck has experience in hosting international conferences and with all the facilities we hope to meet AEPC’s and your personal needs and standards making this a memorable Annual Meeting.

Congress President

TOURS AND EXCURSIONSPost congress tour: Lake Achensee, the “Tyrolean Fjord«Saturday, May 29, 201014:30 - 22.00 hrs w 105,00

The region around lake Achensee is embedded between the Karwendel alpine park, the most beautiful nature reserve in the limestone Alps and the Rofan mountain range with its unique alpine fl ora and fauna – a perfect setting for hikers. It is situated some 45 km to the east of Innsbruck on a high plateau. 9.4 km long and 1 km wide, Achensee is the largest lake in the Tyrol and is often compared to the Norvegian Fjords. It is also called “the Tyrolean pearl”. We start from Innsbruck by bus to go Jenbach. From there we will take the steam locomotive to go up to lake Achensee. After our 7 km adventurous ride on one of the oldest steam locomotives, we arrive at lake Achen-see and go aboard a steam-ship. Experience the magic

spell of this lake which is embedded in between the Karwendel and Rofan mountains.

St. Jacob‘s Cathedral and, above all, the Little Golden Roof. We then visit the ex-cellent museum of Tyrolean Folk Art which will give you a close insight into the life and culture of our Tyrolean ancestors. The museum features among others traditional furniture, costumes and household utensils.

Swarovski crystal worlds and the medieval city of HallFriday, May 28, 201009:00 - 13:00 hrsw45,00

A bus takes us through a number of typical Tyro-lean villages to Wattens, where the Swarovski Crystal Worlds opened their doors to the public some 10 years ago. Through the huge water-spouting head of a bo-tanic giant the visitor enters the mostly subterranean, unique magic World of Crystal. »This place is like a

fairy tale come true. People suddenly experience what they previously knew only in their dreams«, says Viennese multimedia artist André Heller, creator of the Swarovski Crystal Worlds. You have to experience yourself what is hard to describe: a view of the surreal landscape of a glittering galaxy, the inside of a gigantic crystal dome with changing patterns of light and sound, bizarre scenarios - a world of magic. You will have time to look for a souvenir in the crystal shop or enjoy a cup of coffee and a delicious Austrian cake. After a short bus ride we reach the medieval city of Hall with its Mint Tower. The fi rst records of Hasegg Castle and its famous Mint Tower (»Münzturm«) date back to 1306. Its original purpose was to protect the nearby salt-storage houses. When Archduke Ferdinand II had the old mint transferred from the Castle of Sparberegg to Hasegg in 1567, Hall experienced a decisive upswing. The minting of silver-talers in Hall became world famous.

A feeling for nature – adventure in the Tyrolean Mountains Thursday, May 27, 201014:30-17:30 hrs w 48,00

Within only a few minutes from Innsbruck you are amidst the impressive scenery of the high mountain area surrounding the city. The new cable railway starts right next to the Congress Innsbruck and takes you up to Hungerburg at 800m above sea level and then on by

gondola to the Seegrube peak (1.905 m above sea-level). This is one of the fi nest hi-king and skiing regions around Innsbruck, with truly challenging slopes. In summer, the view down into the valley and the glaciers further behind is truly spectacular - an unforgettable experience!
