Since assuming the leadership roles of the AADC Strategic Planning Initiatives Committee last year, we have been busy taking a deep dive into the committees and initiatives that have guided planning to date.

First, some background. The Strategic Planning Initiatives Leadership Team is a committee like others with objectives, deliverables and a reporting structure. The team reports to the Vice President for Administration, Jeanne Fox ’75, on the AADC Board of Directors. Over the last year, we have spent time actively reviewing the strategic planning status, engaging all stakeholders in determining our way forward and building a revised strategy combining the foundation of the past, together with a changing landscape.

The process has been very collaborative. The resulting revised plan relied on the answers to questions such as these: What is working or not working under the current structure? What is missing? And what does success look like? In one meeting we brought everyone together and we covered the walls in sticky notes with individual answers to these questions and then consolidated the information, to find the common themes that would inform our next steps. It was a fun, informative and interactive process. As a result, our Strategic Planning Initiatives are evolving.

Going forward our focus and priorities will be on growing our base of engaged alumnae, improving our ability to leverage data to reach our constituents in new ways, maximizing the quality of programming to ensure relevance to our mission and continued emphasis on increasing awareness of who we are and how we serve our alumnae sisterhood.

AADC Strategic Planning Initiatives Update

Each priority is accompanied by a plan, with objectives and strategies. Tactics are currently being identified and fleshed out by the committees that have also evolved to tackle the redefined work. Each committee has a volunteer alumna chair and AADC staff liaison. The committees and

chairs are: Volunteer Engagement, Heather Tedesco ’12; Data, Sharon Gant Yorlano ’79; Programming, Amanda Hugelmeyer ‘04; Marketing

& Communications, Tina Gordon ’72; and Development, Linda Caldwell Epps ‘73. We are grateful for the volunteer leadership

and AADC staff liaisons who have taken up these assignments and are working hard.

It is still early in the process, but here’s a look at some of what the committees are delivering: Develop-ment has implemented a new means for reaching out to alumnae via texting and Volunteer Engagement, in

collaboration with Marketing and Communications, has created a Volunteer tab on the AADC website where new modules will

reside to provide volunteers with information and guidance for success in their roles.Since any strategic plan must remain fluid and flexible, there

are planned checkpoints to report progress, acknowledge successes, examine roadblocks and make sure that we are always working on the right things. For our organization, those are the initiatives that address the needs and desires of our alumnae sisterhood and are consistently delivering on our mission. As always, we look forward to engaging with you in new ways and invite you to be a part of these efforts. If you would like to get involved with our committees, please contact us at: Karen Lynch ’79 at [email protected], or Beth Middleton Rizzotti ’89 at [email protected].

Mission In

Throughout the year I have the honor of meeting alumnae who inspire me to be the best leader I can possibly be. I have gratitude for the opportunity to lead this great alumnae organization. Alumnae can take pride in knowing that our many engaged alumnae volunteers and our amazing volunteer leaders strive to fulfill the mission of the Associate Alumnae of Douglass College. You – our alumnae – are the true hallmark of the impact of the AADC.

In our annual report for the fiscal year 2018-2019, we share highlights from our “mission in motion.” The AADC develops and promotes connections among Douglass alumnae by providing programs, networks and life-long learning opportunities that represent the interests and needs of our diverse alumnae. We do this in so many ways.

As a leader, I see our mission first-hand in the excitement of alumnae as they process down the aisle to celebrate at AADC Alumnae Reunion Weekend. I feel it as we welcome and recognize alumnae at our AADC Awards Luncheon and when we induct outstanding alumnae into the prestigious AADC Society of Excellence. It is an unflagging sense of pride in each other and in the AADC that continues to connect us.

Fulfilling our mission is also building unity and community among our alumnae. Our Affinity Networks and Regional Connection groups provide opportunities for alumnae to connect – no matter where they may live.

Our Women’s Life-long Learning Initiative continues to embody a strong educational component of our mission. As part of this, the annual Victoria Dabrowski Schmidt ’42 Workplace and Professional Development Symposium

provides educational and career empowerment. Our highly-successful AADC Mabel’s Alumnae Mentoring Program provides alumnae-to-alumnae growth at any stage of career or life. And our popular AADC Smart Talks series are held in person and through livestream that further extends the geography of the AADC and ability to provide programs to more alumnae.

The AADC remains committed to ensuring support to Douglass alumnae for post-graduate studies through fellowships. Through these opportunities, our mission impacts alumnae seeking to achieve at the highest levels.

At the center of what we do together as an alumnae-created, alumnae-led, alumnae-driven and alumnae-supported organization is building relationships and providing opportunities for ongoing, meaningful connections between classmates and across generations of alumnae. This is our mission in motion.

As we create a sense of unity and community among Douglass alumnae, we form new bonds, strengthen existing friendships and explore our future together. It is my hope that each and every

alumna takes the opportunities, takes advantage and takes part in the AADC.Each alumna makes an impact and keeps our mission in motion. By

participating in events, the mission is in motion. By serving the AADC on committees, the mission is in motion. By connecting with other alumnae, the mission is in motion. Through the help of alumnae in moving the AADC forward, our mission is in motion. As we prepare to celebrate our milestone 100th Anniversary, officially marked on June 10, 2022, the AADC’s mission is in motion. Thank you for being a part of this great organization.

Contributions to EndowmentsDouglass FundContributions to the Douglass Fund endowment comprise 14% of all revenue received in FY19. These contributions may be unrestricted or they may be restricted to a certain purpose by the donor.

Pursuant to the terms of the July 2016 Agreement among the AADC, the Douglass Fund and the Rutgers Parties, the AADC may no longer solicit contributions to the Douglass Fund; however, per the Agreement, certain gifts in progress and bequests that predate the Agreement may still be accepted.

The AADC provides prudent stewardship of the Douglass Fund and other endowed funds held by the AADC for the benefit of Douglass. Distributions from both restricted and unrestricted endowments in the Douglass Fund must be used for the benefit of Douglass Residential College. These distributions contribute significant financial support to Douglass and her students. See page 10.

AADCEndowed contributions received by the AADC for FY19 were minimal.

Non-endowed Contributions to AADCNon-endowed unrestricted contributions to the AADC represent 13% of all revenue received in FY19. These contributions provide operating income that make it possible for the AADC to fulfill its mission.

Non-endowed restricted contributions may be expended, but only for the purpose for which the donor restricted the gift. In FY19, the AADC received contributions restricted for various alumnae initiatives and non-endowed fellowships that represent 2% of all revenue received.

Miscellaneous IncomeAADCMiscellaneous Income received by the AADC from sources such as GoodShop, AmazonSmile, Gift Assessment Fees and the alumnae travel program represents 2% of all revenue received in FY19. This income is unrestricted and assists the AADC in fulfilling its mission.

Programs and Alumnae RelationsAADC expenditures represent 5% of

all combined FY19 expenditures. The AADC provides programs including Mabel’s Alumnae Mentoring Program, Alumnae Reunion Weekend, the Victoria Dabrowski Schmidt ’42 Workplace and Professional Development Symposium, AADC Smart Talks, Women’s Life-long Learning Initiatives, visiting lecturers and more that provide opportunities for personal and professional development and for interaction among alumnae.

The AADC coordinates alumnae regional groups and affinity groups as another way for alumnae to connect with each other and the AADC.

Additionally, the AADC administers awards programs to honor alumnae and other individuals for service to the AADC, and to honor alumnae for their distinguished careers. The AADC also actively participates in award programs of other organizations, frequently nominating alumnae to be honored – for example, the New Jersey State Federation of Women’s Clubs New Jersey Women of Achievement Awards and the Rutgers African-American Alumni Aliance Inc. Hall of Fame. The AADC is also invited to serve and participate in programs and events hosted by units at Rutgers.

Communications and MarketingAADC expenditures represent 4% of

all combined FY19 expenditures. The “AADC Newsletter for Alumnae & Friends” is mailed to all alumnae as well as other contributors and friends. The “AADC Magazine for Alumnae & Friends” is mailed to donors once a year in the fall. The AADC E-news electronic newsletter is also sent via email each month.

This year, the AADC updated the Associate Alumnae of Douglass College Web site, which provides information on programs offered by the AADC, individual class reunions, fellowships for alumnae, class notes, and much more. The AADC Web site also provides a mechanism for online event registration and for making a gift.

The AADC maintains a presence in social media on Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, YouTube and Instagram. The AADC continues to extend its reach to alumnae everywhere by adding the ability to virtually connect and participate in events and programs.

of the mission of the Associate Alumnae of Douglass College. This includes an annual giving program with phone, direct mail,

email, social media, Giving Tuesday and crowdfunding components. The annual giving phone program uses a tele-fund vendor who runs the program with oversight from the AADC. The AADC also has a planned giving program.

The AADC cultivates and stewards gifts to the AADC Annual Appeal, gifts designated for alumnae initiatives and for alumnae fellowships.

The AADC provides donor relations support for the Douglass Fund. These expenses are primarily associated with certain pre-Agreement bequests and gifts in progress which the Douglass Fund may still accept, but also include matters relating to existing scholarship and program funds in the Douglass Fund.

of all combined FY19 expenditures.

AADC expenditures for Douglass Fund administration were 9% of all combined FY19 expenditures.

AADC salaries and operating expenses are directly allocated to the functions they serve (above in Alumnae Relations, Communications and Marketing, and Development and Donor Relations; and here in Administration). Salaries of AADC staff (and salary-related expenses such as payroll taxes and benefits) are allocated to the various functions based on each staff member’s responsibilities. A portion of the cost of other resources required to support each function (such as building use fees, office expenses, IT support services and insurance) are also allocated across the functions.

AADC expenditures for AADC Administration also include investment management fees for the endowments held by the AADC.

Endowed funds are distributed in a manner that is designed to preserve the value of the endowment and generate a predictable stream of available income. The specific use of endowment distributions may be restricted by the donor, or unrestricted.

The donated contributions in a non-endowed fund are utilized in their entirety. When the contributed gift has been expended according to the donor’s wishes, the fund ceases to exist. The specific use of a non-endowed gift may be restricted by the donor, or unrestricted.

FY19 Expenditures continued from page 10

In addition to the distributions on the previous page made in 2018-2019, Douglass Residential College also benefitted from the following distributions based on monies transferred to Douglass in prior years.

As per the Agreement among the Rutgers Parties, the AADC and the Douglass Fund, in October 2016 an unrestricted distribution of $4,605,293.57 was made to Douglass Residential College to be used consistent with the mission of the college. In September 2019, Douglass Residential College reported the first expenditures from this distribution, totaling $361,784.97. In January 2004, the AADC established a unique fund of $1 million for Douglass College to expand several of the college’s renowned women’s leadership programs and to launch new initiatives under Dean Carmen Twillie Ambar. After Dean Ambar’s departure, the balance of $432,556.82 was transferred to DRC, based on incoming Dean Jacquelyn Litt’s proposal for the use of these funds. For fiscal year 2018-2019, Douglass Residential College reported the following expenditures from this gift:

Highlights from Fiscal Year July 1, 2018 – June 30, 2019Dean Cobb, “Having the Conversation: Sexual Violence and the Black Woman.” The AADC Young Alumnae Network (YAN) continued its Sisterhood Book Club & Book Swap and hosted the popular YAN-O-Ween and time for knitting and crafts at YAN Cabin Fever & Sweet Treat Competition. The AADC proudly launched the new Evergreen Affinity Network, welcoming all alumnae, especially those who previously served as Douglass tour guides and campus recruiters.

The AADC Regional Connection Groups remained active and helped connect alumnae to one another across the country. The Washington, DC, Area Regional Connection Group held

a Summer Alumnae Gathering hosted in the home of Elizabeth Trocolli Boris ’64. The AADC Southern New Jersey Regional Connection Group toured Philadelphia’s Reading Terminal Market, followed by lunch. Many more enjoyed a free movie screening in Cherry Hill, both provided by Kristin Long ‘70. The AADC New York City Regional Connection Group continued to gather and dine together at museums and Broadway shows.
