O n April 7-9, 2009, the members of the American Society of Naval Engineers (ASNE) gathered at the Gaylord National Hotel and Convention Center in National Harbor, Maryland, for ASNE Day 2009. The event, titled “Naval Engineering in Support of 21 st Century Maritime Strategy,” was a resounding success with attendees and exhibitors. Tuesday, April 7, 2009 ASNE Day 2009 commenced with the annual Sections meeting where representatives from the Society’s local Sections meet with the national leadership to review the past year’s activities, exchange lessons learned and discuss Section operations. This session was followed by the annual ASNE Business Meeting. The Business Meeting was called to order by ASNE President RADM Dale G. Gabel, USCG. President Gabel also presented the Section awards. Following the Business Meeting, ASNE Members gathered for the annual Leadership Dinner, at which the many contributions of ASNE volunteers are recognized. ASNE could not function without the dedicated support of its many volunteers. We owe them all a great debt of gratitude for the time and talent they have offered to the Society’s programs throughout the year. A highlight of the Leadership Dinner was the presentation of the Frank G. Law Award. This award was presented by President Gabel to Mr. Guy Hardwick, Vice President of L-3 Communications of Westwood Corporation, in recognition of his longtime dedication and service to ASNE. On April 7-9, 2009, the members of the American Society of Naval Engineers (ASNE) gathered at the Gaylord

USCG, and COL Jim Fritz, USMC called the symposium to order. Welcoming remarks were given by President Gabel.

The joint keynote address was given by RDML Robert L. Thomas, Jr., USN, Director, Strategy and Policy Division (N51), BGEN Andrew W. O’Donnell, Jr., USMC, Director, Capabilities Development Directorate, Marine Corps Combat Development Command, and RDML Joseph

R. Castillo, USCG, Director of Response Policy (CG-53). Their remarks offered a joint service perspective on 21st century maritime strategy.

The fi rst panel, Developing Technology and Force Structure in Support of the Maritime Strategy, was moderated by Mr. Carl Siel and Ms. Janet Jaensch. Panelists included RDML Thomas Eccles, USN, NAVSEA 05, RDML Thomas Ostebo, USCG, CG-4, Mr. John Burrow, MARSYSCOM ED, RDML Jerry Burroughs, USN, SPAWAR 05, and RDML Donald Gaddis, USN, NAVAIR 04.

The panel session was followed by the Grand Opening of the Exhibit Hall and the Poster Session Luncheon, sponsored by DRS Technologies. The Poster Session was moderated by Dr. Rob Cox, assisted by Mr. Dave Stevenson. The afternoon concluded with two concurrent Technical Paper Sessions. A complete list of ASNE Day papers and authors is included in this issue.

The evening’s Honors Gala, sponsored by Booz Allen Hamilton, Converteam, and Northrop Grumman, kicked off with a Welcome Reception in the Exhibit Hall. The Honors Ceremony featured the presentation of the ASNE Gold Medal Award, the Harold E. Saunders Award, and the Rosenblatt Young Naval Engineer Award.

Mr. Kai Skvarla of the U.S. Coast Guard Deepwater Program Offi ce, for his remarkable early professional achievement in naval engineering.

In recognition of his lifetime achievement in the fi eld of naval engineering, the Harold E. Saunders Award was presented to Mr. Joseph F. Yurso, Director of Technical Development for Q.E.D. Systems Incorporated. The award was presented by RADM William C. Wyatt, USN (Ret.).

RDML Thomas Eccles, USN, presented the ASNE Gold Medal for signifi cant achievement in naval engineering over the past fi ve years to CAPT Norbert H. Doerry, USN.

Following the honors ceremony, guests enjoyed the Ports of Call Reception in the Exhibit Hall. Featuring food and beverages representative of the sites of some of ASNE’s upcoming events, this elegant and entertaining event allowed guests to mingle with friends and associates while enjoying a variety of regional cuisines. All proceeds from this event benefi ted the ASNE Scholarship Program.

Thursday, April 9, 2009Thursday’s session opened with several presentations on the PEO Perspective moderated by CAPT Jim Stein, USN. Mr. Mark Roberts served as assistant moderator. Speakers included RDML Terry Benedict, PEO, Integrated Warfare Systems; RDML Ronald Rábago, USCG, Director of Acquisitions Programs and PEO; Ms. E. Anne Sandel, PEO Littoral and Mine Warfare; and RDML James McManamon, USN, NAVSEA Deputy Commander for Surface Warfare.

Following a concurrent Technical Paper Session, attendees gathered for a reception in the Exhibit

Hall as a prelude to the Awards Luncheon. The luncheon featured speaker Mr. Michael White, Business Area Executive for Air and Missile Defense, Johns Hopkins APL, and the presentation of the Solberg Award and the “Jimmie” Hamilton Award.

Mr. David A. Miskimens, Technical Director for PEO Submarines, presented the 2008 Solberg Award to Dr. Gregory H. Ames, Lead Engineer, Sensors and Sonar Technology, NUWC Division, for his work in naval engineering research over the last three years.

President Gabel presented the 2008 “Jimmie” Hamilton Award to Dr. Alan J. Brown, CAPT, USN (Ret), and LT Justin Strock, USCG, for their paper titled “Methods for Naval Ship Concept and Propulsion Technology Exploration in a CGX Case Study” which was selected as the best technical paper published in the Naval Engineers Journal in 2008.

The event’s fi nal panel, Industry Perspective, was moderated by VADM Kevin McCoy, USN, Commander, Naval Sea Systems Command. Mr. Jason Reynolds was assistant moderator. Panelists included Mr. Kevin Graney, Vice President of Engineering, NASSCO; Mr. Pete Diakun, Vice President of Emerging Technologies, Northrop Grumman Shipbuilding; RADM John Kelly, USN (Ret.), Business Development Director for Seapower Capability Systems in Raytheon Integrated Defense Systems; Mr. Fred Moosally, President, Electronics and Surveillance Systems, Lockheed Martin; RADM Joe Carnevale, USN Ret.; and RADM John V. ‘Jack’ Chenevey, USN, Ret., Director, Security Solutions Intelligence and Security Systems, Network and Space Systems, Boeing.
