SCHOOL ENHANCEMENT SESSIONS

All our families are encouraged to participate in our Enhancement Sessions as they are a terrific way to not only assist our school but also network and make connections with other families. The school enhancement fee of $200 will be discounted if two or more sessions are attended. If you intend on attending our Enhancement Sessions, you may exclude the $200 fee from your annual school fee and levy total. Naturally, if by the end of the year you have not attended the working bee session/s as intended, this will remain on your account. Some families have indicated that they are happy to attend the Enhancement Sessions without claiming the $200 discount. Please go to www.schoolinterviews.com.au and use code MA4ZT to register for a session. Upcoming School Enhancement Sessions in 2017:

PRINCIPAL’S NEWS Dear Parents, Caregivers, Students and Friends,

Sacrament of Confirmation We continue to pray for our students who are embarking on their Confirmation journey. Fr Laurence, Gail, Erin and the Year 5/6 teachers have been working closely together to ensure a deep understanding of the Sacrament of Confirmation for our children. The Home Masses are in Week 9 of Term 3 and Week 1 and 2 of Term 4. The Family Faith Night is on Thursday 14th September. There are also Commitment Masses on the weekend of the 9th and 10th of September. All students who wish to make their Confirmation are asked to attend.

School Improvement Surveys This week students, staff and parents are completing the Insight SRC school improvement surveys. Seventy families have been randomly selected across each year level to complete the surveys. If you are one of the fortunate families to receive the survey it is extremely important to ensure you complete the survey before Friday 8th September. At this stage only 11 families have completed the survey. Your voice and opinions are deeply valued.

School Performance: ‘Into Africa’ Tickets are on sale for our biennial school performance of ‘Into Africa’ at Ticketebo. This year promises to be a wonderful, spectacular show. Due to the staging, population of the school and two performances, we are only able to offer two tickets initially per family; this is to ensure every family is able to attend. Once all families are accounted for we will then release further tickets if and when available. Please hurry and purchase your tickets. It is an expectation that all students participate in this great learning opportunity.

School Disco Congratulations to Sarah Griffith, Ruth Grigg, Trudy Roberts, Tracey Otley, Caroline Gleeson, Susan Benson, Stacey McKenna, Kate Merida and Renee Young for organising the school disco. All feedback indicates the children thoroughly enjoyed themselves and the DJ was very engaging. Thank you to the parents who assisted by supervising and ensuring the children felt safe and happy.

The Resilience Project: Wednesday 6th September I remind everyone about Hugh van Cuylenberg presenting at St Michael’s on Wednesday 6th September at 6:45pm for a 7:00pm start. I ask that at least one parent from each family attends as this presentation is not to be missed. Hugh works extensively with players in the AFL and Rugby League building their resilience. He established the Resilience Project in an effort to provide strategies for people to combat anxiety. He is an engaging presenter. All staff will also be present.

Father’s Night Tonight A Father’s Night has been organised for this evening in the Hub at 6:30pm. Please see the flyer further in the newsletter. So come along and join the other dads to celebrate fathers in our community.

Father’s Day Stall Tomorrow the PFA are running the Father’s Day Stall. Gifts are $5 per child. If you haven’t yet sent your money to the office, please encourage your child to bring it tomorrow so they can purchase a gift for dad or Grandpa to thank them for all the great things they do. Thank you in advance to Sarah Griffith, Caroline Gleeson, Belinda O’Callaghan, Grace Justus, Rebecca Mardling and Stacey McKenna for organising and wrapping the gifts.

CareMonkey Earlier in the year we received feedback from parents regarding an accessible digital platform for updating medical information, parental permission and other forms. Finally we have introduced CareMonkey to our community. Vanessa sent a letter this week to all families about what the platform entails and information required from families to get started. Many schools use CareMonkey and are happy with this vital form of communication. This is another way that the school is trying to make the returning of forms and communication easier for our parents especially due to the many responsibilities placed upon families. Please read further for a more in depth update regarding school communication.

School Enhancement: Saturday 2nd September Our next school enhancement session will commence on Saturday 2nd September at 9:00am until 11:00am. Presently, we have 13 families who have nominated for this session. We need a great deal of furniture relocated and general cleaning completed. If you have not yet received your $200 rebate by attending two sessions, I urge you to register for Saturday’s working bee by logging onto www.schoolinterviews.com.au with the code MA4ZT. Many hands make light work and we are always grateful for your attendance. Please bring a trolley. The PFA will be providing a BBQ and refreshments.

Marshall White Primary School ‘My Dream Home’ Competition Just a reminder that St Michael’s students are invited to take part in an art competition organised by Marshall White who are major sponsors of our Fun Fair. The students will be able to work on their ‘Dream Home’ artwork in break time with Mr Williams or at home if they choose. The basic guidelines are as follows:

1. Each school can only enter one piece of artwork per Age category – therefore maximum three (3) entries per school. It is up to the school to decide which three pieces they would like to put forward. The age categories are Prep – Year 2, Year 3 – 4 and Year 5 – 6; winners will share in $45,000 worth of prizes. Each winner will get $5000 for their school art department, a party with classmates and an ice-cream cake.

2. Entries must be submitted by Friday 8th September 5:30pm. On artwork submissions, please identify the School name, Student name and Age category clearly on the entry.

3. Any entries received after Friday 8th September will not be included. 4. People’s Choice nominations will begin Friday 15th September through Marshall White’s social media and

www.marshallwhitedreamhome.com. Please remember to vote for and share your favourite piece of artwork to boost your school’s change of winning. The winner of People’s Choice will be the artwork with the most votes at 5:00pm EST on Thursday 12th October.

5. All winners will be published on www.marshallwhitedreamhome.com on Friday 13th October by 5:00pm EST. 6. Please ensure all completed artwork is delivered to Mrs Matthys by Wednesday 6th September so the students and

staff can cote at line-up for the three pieces to be submitted.

Lost and Found Some foreign currency has been kindly handed into the office. If you think this may belong to you, please email me or see me in the office.

Illness of Students Just a reminder that if your child is unwell, please keep them home to recover and rest. It is important to break the cycle of infection and ensure that all students remain well. Long, cold winters where children are often indoors can cause these illnesses to manifest.

Liturgical Sculpture We are very excited to be raising money for a beautiful religious sculpture to complete Stage 1 of the Masterplan. This religious piece is the most important aspect of our build as it tangibly demonstrates to everyone who we are and what we stand for as a Catholic school. As part of this building project, we are seeking donations to the School Building Fund.

These donations will free up funds which will allow us to pay for the liturgical sculpture. All donations over $2 are tax deductible. All families and parishioners who make a donation will have their name etched on a plaque to commemorate their generosity and support of St Michael’s Parish School. Our deep gratitude goes to the families and parishioners who have already donated so generously. Thank you to the families who have already responded to my letter about the Liturgical Sculpture. If you have not yet responded, I encourage you to do so as it is incredibly valuable to hear from all families. Marisa Matthys Principal [email protected]

DEPUTY’S NEWS

Samarinda Lodge Visit Next Tuesday 5th September, the Mini Vinnies Team and Year 6 Confirmation Candidates have been invited to partake in a community service visit to Samarinda Elderly Care Lodge. This is a wonderful opportunity to reunite our link with the community and do some good for others. We are going to sing some hymns and read some short stories for the residents. Students were given a form to return by Friday. If any student in Years 3 to 6 did not receive a form and would like to join us, they can request a form from the office.

Confirmation A final call for Year 6 students preparing for the Sacrament of Confirmation! Online booking has been extended until Monday 4th September for the upcoming commitment Masses. This is a vital part of Confirmation preparation and all students are required to sign up for and attend a commitment Mass. There are three commitment Masses in September that parents and caregivers are able to choose from. These are on Saturday 9th at 6:30pm and Sunday 10th at 9:00am and 10:30am. Please log onto www.schoolinterviews.com.au and use the event code qvdd9 then select the time most appropriate for you. Final bookings will close at 4:00pm on Monday 4th September. Signing up for these Masses demonstrates your commitment to be involved in the preparation of your child for such an important sacrament. It is also our way of knowing that your child will join the celebration of Confirmation. At the Sacrament of Confirmation on Saturday 21st October, candidates will confirm their desire to be witnesses of Jesus Christ to the world. The children are asked to participate in acts of service for their parish, school or local community. One such action may be through hospitality by preparing and serving refreshments after all commitment Masses. If the candidates choose this act of service they are asked to prepare a plate of food themselves (or purchase with their own money) and bring to Mass. On Thursday 14th September there is a Family Faith Evening for Confirmation. We are fortunate to have Mary Ryan coming to facilitate this evening for us. It is at 7:00pm in the Hub. Students are required to attend this evening with their parent/s or caregiver. A Very Important Request: As further preparation for Confirmation students will participate in a Home Mass Service. We request four (4) families to volunteer to host these liturgies at their home. Very little preparation is required, we ask that volunteer families have a space for approximately 12 children and their parent/s or caregivers, with adults requiring a seat and the children may sit on the floor. Host families are also asked to provide a beverage (coffee and tea for adults and possibly water or cordial for the children). Each family that attends are asked to bring along a small plate of supper for sharing after the Mass. The Home Mass Services begin at 7:30pm until 8:30pm and the updated dates for these are:

Tuesday 12th September

Tuesday 10th and Wednesday 11th October

Tuesday 17th October Please email me if you are interested in hosting one of these evenings.

Woolworths Earn and Learn St Michael’s has registered for the Woolworths Earn and Learn Program. Families who have collected stickers are asked to please stick them onto a sticker sheet and pass them to the school office via the office baskets. Sticker sheets can be collected from Woolworths or downloaded from: https://wowpmediaaae.azureedge.net/content/content/earn-and-learn-sticker%20sheet.pdf Stickers must be stuck onto a sheet for the school to be able to collect the earn and learn points.

School Fair The staff are holding the Lucky Dip stand and would like to put a call out for donations of wrapping paper. If you have any useful wrapping paper that you are happy to pass on, please leave it at the office. Erin Nagel Deputy Principal / RE & Mathematics Leader [email protected]

COMMUNICATIONS UPDATE

Adding School Events to Your Smartphone and/or Google Calendar As has been previously mentioned, St Michael’s has a new school website. One particular feature that I would like to draw parents’ attention to is the calendar:

Nowadays, many people enjoy the benefit of adding events straight to their smartphone and/or Google calendar with the click of a button. Our website calendar now allows for this. When you click on a calendar event, it will expand to show the time, location and this To add the event to your smartphone or device, click CALENDAR. To add the event to your Google calendar click GOOGLECAL. You may notice that certain events have the time listed as “all day” despite having “(Time TBC)” in the event title. The reason for this is because at this stage, events cannot be added onto the website with simply a date; a time range needs to be specified as well. Once confirmed though, these start/end times will be listed and the “(Time TBC)” will be removed from the title. Naturally, these TBC events can still be added to your smartphone or Google calendar, however please be aware that you will need to adjust the details later yourself or delete and then re-add the updated event from the web calendar. Newsletter diary dates will be updated as at the day that issue is published. Keeping in mind that our newsletter comes out fortnightly, please ensure you check the web calendar for the most up-to-date event details. The school website homepage features the next five (5) upcoming events. The “See All Events” button beneath will take you to the full calendar (as linked above). For quicker access to the website from your smartphone or device, you may consider adding a shortcut to your home screen. As per usual though, if something needs urgent attention, we will alert families via Skoolbag.

CareMonkey Thank you to the families who have completed their CareMonkey Main Profile Nomination Form. We would like to give parents as much time as possible to set up their child's/children's care profile and thus, ask that nomination forms be returned by tomorrow, Friday 1st September. Through CareMonkey, your child's/children's medical and emergency information is at your disposal. If you have had a chance to browse CareMonkey's website, you will see that it has much to offer in the way streamlining communication and upholding duty of care. In saying that, our main focus right now is ensuring the school knows who will be the main profile creator/owner and that families are properly acquainted with accessing and modifying details. Only then will we look to utilise CareMonkey’s other features such as digital forms.

Visitor Registration: Working With Children Checks Parents who have signed in/out at the office may be familiar with our new iPad visitor registration system, Passtab. This system has undergone an update whereby all visitors (contractors, volunteers, parents, etc.) are now required to enter in their current Working With Children Check (WWCC) number when signing in. With that said, many parents have already forwarded a copy of their WWCC to the school so having to re-enter this number every single time would be redundant. A solution to this is that these parents will be issued a quickpin, that is, a unique code that will make the sign in process much faster. Having a quickpin basically means that the school has pre-registered your details, including your WWCC number. If we have a copy of your WWCC, you will receive more information next week with regards to your issued quickpin. If we do not have your WWCC on file yet, please provide us with a copy if you would like a quickpin arranged. Thank you for your ongoing feedback and support. As technological capabilities broaden, it is wonderful that we can take advantage of new systems and processes so communication can be more efficient, helpful and accurate. If you have any queries regarding the aforementioned, please contact me via the email below or see me in the school office. Vanessa Leung [email protected]

WELLBEING UPDATE

Respectful Relationships Project Most Australians recognise that violence against women is an issue. However, as a community we excuse or minimise the attitudes and behaviours in young people that can lead to violence. By doing this we are allowing those attitudes and behaviours to become a normal part of growing up. Without realising it, we are making gender inequality and disrespectful behaviour acceptable.

We all have an important role to play to ensure future generations know what disrespect really is and how it starts, and that children grow up in a culture that promotes respect. To do this we need to start by recognising the problem, what our role is as an influencer and stop our excuses. To stop the cycle of violence we then need to start leading by example, and start a conversation about respect. As parents, caregivers, family and community members we have an important role as influencers of young people. We should speak up when someone says or does something that excuses disrespect towards women. These conversations aren’t easy to talk about with young people. Having the confidence to get started can sometimes be the hardest part.

Below are tools to help you have those conversations:

The Respect Checklist

Respectful Relationships Team: Parent Representative The Respectful Relationships Team is looking for a parent representative to join our team. We meet twice a term for two hours on a Thursday morning from 9:00am – 11:00am. Please read our goal and team purpose below and contact me via the school office number, 9885 3105, if you are interested and would like to know more.

Respectful Relationships Project Goal: At St Michael's we will adopt a whole school approach to Respectful Relationships for all students, staff and families by promoting a culture of participation, respect, support, equity and fairness.

Purpose of the Respectful Relationships team: The establishment of a Respectful Relationships team provides the opportunity for staff, students and parents to work together to promote respectful relationships. A representative team allows a variety of views and perspectives to be heard and promotes collective ownership and responsibility. In addition, this group works to support the sustainability of a health promoting whole school approach to respectful relationships.

The Resilience Project Hugh Van Cuylenburg, the founder of ‘The Resilience Project’ will be presenting to the parents, caregivers and staff of St Michael’s on Wednesday 6th September at 6:45pm for a 7:00pm start in the Hub.

At least one parent from each family is asked to attend. Please RSVP to me via the email below.

Hugh Van Cuylenburg has been working in education for over 13 years. Starting out as a primary school teacher, he then moved into a position working in a secondary setting with disengaged adolescents. The highlight of his teaching career was the year he spent in the far north of India volunteering and living at an underprivileged school in the Himalayas. It was here that he discovered resilience in its purest form.

Inspired by this experience Hugh returned to Melbourne and commenced working on his own programs for schools. ‘The Resilience Project’ was born. Having completed his post grad studies into mental health and resilience, Hugh has developed and facilitated presentations and programs for over 300 schools Australia wide.

I look forward to seeing you there.

I am training very hard and most weekends you will see me hiking up hills in preparation for Kokoda. NO donations will go towards my trip, ALL money will go towards funding much needed support services provided by Alzheimer’s Australia for people affected by dementia. Kokoda will not be easy, but the more donations that come in, the more motivation I will have to make it to the finishing point! Thank you to those who have already generously donated. ST MICHAEL’S ASHBURTON (SMACK) GOLF

A group of St Michael’s dads have a social game of golf about once a month throughout the year. We’re looking for new players (particularly those who are relatively new to the school) and will welcome anyone (including mums) who wants to come along for a game. Playing ability is generally low, no handicap is necessary and it is social not serious. No obligation to play every time, just come when it suits you! The next round will probably be in the second half of August at Malvern Valley Public Golf Course. If you would like to be included in the mailing list for further details, please email me at [email protected] or call on 0409 255 076. We hope to see some new players.
