A NOTE FROM YOUR PASTOR Here is a draft of my homily from last weekend in which I tried to address the issue of scandal:
As Church, these past 14 years we’ve suffered some real setbacks to our morale. We’ve experienced scandal that for most of us,
just a few years ago, we would never have believed possible. And just when we think it might be subsiding, we read another story about
a local Church leader accused of doing something scandalous. It can be draining.
One terrible thing about scandal, is that it can bring about despair or her cousins: cynicism, loss of faith, and anger. And so
Sunday worship can decline, some stop assembling on the Lord’s day, and so on some level, we stop experiencing the Good News in our
hearts and stop sharing it with our world.
Jesus himself knew what a threat scandalous behavior was to his flock. Knowing that it would happen, he spoke with great force
against it. In Lk 17:1-2 we read “He said to his disciples, ‘Things that cause sin will inevitably occur, but woe to the person through
whom they occur. It would be better for him if a millstone where put around his neck and he be thrown into the sea than for him to cause
one of these little ones to sin.’” The little ones he refers to are all of us, who as children of God, depend upon each other to be inspired
and lifted up by one another’s noble and good behavior, especially by the behavior of us priests and bishops. When the opposite
happens, scandal occurs, which brings upon us all, the temptation to lose faith, to lose hope, to question, “Is there anybody, is there
anything I can believe in or trust in, anymore?”
I worry not just about our Church, but about our world. I wish the Church had a monopoly on scandal. Unfortunately this isn’t
simply a struggle for the Church but for our entire society. There are police officers who have seen their own fall into disgrace, school
teachers, politicians, doctors, you name the profession, and there is scandal if you look for it. It seems its taking a toll on our society. In
some circles, it seems people are losing faith in humanity itself. That loss of faith is expressed, in various ways, in the fabric of our
culture. Just visit one of our local video stores and try to find an uplifting inspiring movie. It takes a lot of hard work. And if you do find
one, and tell others about it…it always seems to be the movie few have heard about or watched…For example, have you seen Cinderella,
the new one? If not, rent it!
It just seems that the darker movies are the ones receiving the attention and the awards most often. It is almost as if we enjoy
contemplating the darkness rather than the light… rather than the true, the good and the beautiful. Is it because we believe in the darkness
rather than in the light? Is it because we believe beauty, goodness and truth are fairy tales? No matter what scandalizes us, no matter what
tempts us to throw our hands up in disgust, I hope we never let the evil one draw us into such a lie.
Growing up, I remember my parents at times getting flustered and a little negative. Perhaps running a business can do that to
you. Not all customers were saints, let me tell you. But then, all of a sudden they would get done talking to or working for someone…and
as they left my Dad or Mom would say, “You know, there are a lot of good people out there!” …as if this were some great revelation!
Being young, I took that for granted. So I would react to such statements by thinking or saying, “Well of course there are a lot of
good people out there! Why would you think otherwise!” But I was young and didn’t realize how many “scandalous” things my parents
had seen through their years. It is sad how the years sometimes threaten to take away the innocence of our youth…that built in instinct
God gave us, that creation, the world, life and people are basically good! And it is an accurate instinct…it is good…although in need of
redemption.
The good news is that in moments of scandal, God reaches out to us and sends signs, experiences and people which
counterbalance the darkness, and the temptation toward despair or cynicism. And so my parents would respond by saying, “You know,
there are a lot of good people out there!” I pray each of us can do the same. I pray we remember those experiences rather than over focus
on the darkness. Then, no matter what scandal we might have to endure, whether in the religious, political, or educational fields, by
God’s grace, we will never allow it to take away our Christian optimism! Goodness is stronger than Evil. God and his sacred assembly,
the Church, are greater than any scandal. God’s kingdom will come. The gates of hell shall not prevail against the Church or God’s
creation.
In our Gospel today, Jesus prays just before the scandal of the cross, and the scandal of being betrayed by one of his Apostles,
one of the first Bishops. Scandal, you see, was there from the beginning. I find it strangely consoling! And what did Jesus say of Judas as
a warning to us all: (Mt 26:24) The Son of Man indeed goes, as it is written of him, but woe to that man by whom the Son of Man is
betrayed. It would be better for that man if he had never been born. But what fills me with hope is that Jesus never lost hope because of
Judas…and not just Judas, but the betrayal of Peter and his other followers who fled and abandoned him in his hour of need. Despite all
he suffered by the scandalous behavior of his friends, he never despaired. That gives me hope. We can take the same path.
Also in our Gospel today, taken from the Lord’s beautiful priestly prayer, Chapter 17 of the Gospel of John, one line in
particular struck me. He said, “I pray not only for them, but also for those who will believe through their word.” That’s a reference to us.
He was praying for us. In other words, Jesus had a firm faith that the Church, his sacred assembly of friends, would continue on right
down to our time. Despite the scandal of the cross that was about to fall upon him and his followers, despite the many scandals that
would happen through the ages, he knew his circle of friends, the sacred assembly, what we call the church, would endure and even grow
in love and unity! We are offered that same confidence and hope today.
I don’t think it’s an accident we have the Penitential rite near the beginning of every Mass. It’s no accident we begin each Mass
asking God to forgive us our sins…the ways that we may have given scandal to one another. It is a reminder that God practically
promised that scandal would come, just as it did for him. So, we shouldn’t be so surprised. Rather, we are asked to trust that his love and
the goodness of his world, will overcome every temptation toward despair, cynicism or anger generated by scandal. But we shouldn’t be
passive. We need to address the issues that lead to scandal. There has to be truthfulness and justice. But let’s also do our own personal
part. Let’s rededicate ourselves to never giving scandal by anything we say or do. Since all sin is capable of causing a loss of hope, let us
ask the Lord to make us truly holy, so we never drag our brother or sister down.
And then let us prayfor one another, especially for those who may have shocked or let us down, and their victims. Let us pray
for them rather than be embittered by them. The road may be bumpy…but God is with us…and will fill our hearts with his confidence
spirit! Fr. Joe
