From Our Pastor

Dear Parishioners, You would think that the Holy Family would have had a life filled with sweetness and light. However the few details that we find (mostly in the gospels of Matthew and Luke) display quite a different story. It presents the family of Jesus, Mary and Joseph struggling with crises which still are front page news in our times. We begin with an unplanned pregnancy. Even Mary must ask how can this be since she has no relations with a man. Shortly after this revelation we are told that Joseph intended to divorce Mary quietly, no doubt shocked and confused when learning that she was expecting a child. One can only imagine the tears, anger, protests of innocence which preceded Joseph's final grasp of this miracle. Next we find the couple homeless. There is no room for them at the inn in Bethlehem. How many other doors were slammed in their face? They must settle for a stable or barn for the Savior of the world to be born. Barely has the joy of Jesus’ birth been expressed when the Holy Family become refugees fleeing political oppression and certain death. They must fly to Egypt with only the clothes on their backs. How would they be received? Would the Egyptians welcome them with open arms, or demand endless investigations of their true plight and possible deceit? Would Joseph easily find work to support his family? Next we have an Amber alert. Jesus, a young twelve year-old, is missing. Could he have been abducted? Where is he, and how much anguish was felt by Joseph and Mary as they searched frantically for Him? Is there any parent who would dread being in that same quandary? Although Scripture does not mention anything specifically about Joseph, we can safely assume that he died at some point after the events described above. Was this death the result of a long illness or a complete shock? How old was Jesus at the time? Was Mary the equivalent of a welfare mother, requiring the assistance of any relatives or friends that might be able to assist her? Finally we have the excruciating scene at the foot of the cross as Mary must watch helplessly as her innocent Son is judicially executed. Could there be any greater sorrow? We honor these three as the Holy and Blessed Family. They were not spared the crises and heartaches of family life. Rather they were like us in all things save sin. Their holiness comes from overcoming such obstacles. We are called to do the same.

St. Vincent de Paul Society

All of our Members and those we serve wish all of our friends, benefactors and prayer supporters a most blessed and happy New Year. This past year we made some strides on making the lives of the poor and needy hopefully better while offering God’s help for a brighter future. At the same time we realize that what we provided to others is very small considering the levels of poverty that exist in our community, our nation and our world. We need to continually better our efforts this next year and dedicate what we have to making a better future for everyone. We work to provide the material needs of others as best we can but there is always much room for improvement and enhancement of what and how we do it. Even more important is the spiritual betterment of others and ourselves as we enter this next year. Let us thank God our Savior for all he has enabled us to do and at the same time ask Him to help us in the future to do better in providing help both spiritual and material to everyone we encounter. While reflecting on the work we just completed this past year, we look forward to working with all of you in helping us help others. We ask that this next year be very blessed for all of you, your families and friends, and everyone we encounter to offer additional blessings to them. Have a wonderful celebration of the New Year beginning with the Solemnity of Mary on New Year’s Day. Don’t forget to enjoy some of 2016 at Anyway’s in Oakbrook Terrace by having a wonderful meal that can simultaneously earn a great percentage donation for our Society by simply bringing your dining receipt to the box in the church foyer.

Prayer for Vocations by Pope Francis God our Father, You made each of us to use our gifts in the Body of Christ. We ask that You inspire young people whom You call to priesthood and consecrated life to coura-geously follow Your will. Send workers into Your great harvest so that the Gospel is preached, the poor are served with love, the suffering are comforted, and Your people are strengthened by the sacra-ments. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen For an increase of vocations to the priesthood, diaconate and religious life, especially in the Diocese of Joliet, we pray to the Lord. Lord, hear our prayer.

Vocations are born in prayer and from prayer; and only through prayer can they persevere and bear fruit.

Pope Francis
