Artist Statement: With the heart of a scientist and hands that sew, I weave the story of my life. Since the dawn of my time, I've been connected to fiber and fabric. Arriving home from the hospital as a first generation American, I was wrapped in a hand embroidered baby blanket wearing a tiny gown sewn by my grandmother. I grew up bilingual, with an engineer father and a teacher mother; who nurtured my creativity and inquisitive nature. In my art all the parts of who I am overlap; artist, athlete, scientist, communicator, storyteller, innovator and philosopher. Resulting from my lifelong fascinations, I explore themes of time, texture, and connectivity. My experiences in science and sports have influenced my artistic process, as I ask "what if" and challenge myself daily. At age nine, gazing at El Greco's paintings for his signature S shape, and touching the carved stone walls at the Alhambra palace, I developed a learning style and analytical perspective. Garment sewing provided valuable life lessons such as patience (and accuracy) in my teens as I inserted and reinserted a zipper seven times. After graduating college with a Physics degree, my first grownup purchases were a brand new sewing machine and a used car. I love the dance of free-motion quilting and seeing my art come alive with texture. My art is marked with surface design, hints of irony and innocence plus a story or two along the way. I'm just a human, creating art, making connections and on a mission to add joy and laughter to our planet. Art, I create. Stories I relate. Spirituality, Sci-Fi, Sports, Science are all great. But I am more... More-ah-see-wits, Amalia Teresa Parra Morusiewicz, fun from A to Z.
