Minot State and has art featured atour NDSU location andMinotlocation.”When first entering the establish-
ment, the impression is of an open-plan seating arrangement, but it isdivided into a family restaurantand bar area restricted to over 21.“That’s where we have the racierpieces,” said Halvorson Lunski. She is referring primarily to the
bar itself, covered with pinup pho-tos under Plexiglas. The tablesthroughout are topped with worksof art created in Halvorson Lunski’sgarage. She has dressed each withits own theme, often hiding some-thing so diners can find somethingdifferent every time they come in.One is made of crayons, one of
Legos. The 62 Doors table is oldpress items, and one is coveredwith Canadian nickels.“That’s because they have
beavers on them,” she said, refer-ring to theMSUmascot. As towhere she finds some of her piecesand inspiration, she said, “I do a lotof shopping in antique stores.”One of the tables inMinot is by
Bell School, because one of theowner’s sons attends there. Sheswaps out the tables as well as thehanging artwork to keep the decora-tions fresh.Halvorson Lunski has worked
with the owners on various proj-ects, and since her degree is ingraphic design in digital media, herfirst task was the website, with thetables following when the restau-rant in Fargo was being designed, and has expanded into productphotography for the chain.Spicy Pie is located at 1100 N.

MinotSymphonyOrchestrahosts annualfamily showBy CEECY NUCKER
A lot goes on behindthe scenes to provide thekind of performance thatthe Minot Symphony Or-chestra will put on Satur-day at the Ann NicoleNelson Hall at MinotState University. This is the entry in the
group’s lineup set for theFamily Concert, whichnot only highlights thewinner of the Minot Sym-phony Orchestra highschool competition, but isperformed twice for visit-ing schools the day be-fore.The violin soloist is
Minot High School seniorJack Fagerland, a regularmember of the MinotSymphony Orchestra, who will be performingBeethoven’s Violin Con-certo, Opus 61 in DMajor.“This is the piece he
played for the competi-tion,” said Dennis Si-mons, conductor of theMSO. “When studentspresent their selections(for) judging, Jon Rumney(MSO concertmaster)makes sure there are or-chestrations readily avail-able so they can play atthe Family Concert ifthey win.”Fagerland has also
been accepted this year toboth the Naval Academyin Annapolis andWestPoint.“I’m tending toward
West Point,” Fagerlandsaid. “My grandfathergraduated from there. ButI will certainly keepmusic as a sideline in mylife.”One of the group’s
goals is to introduce chil-dren to the joys of classi-cal music, live musicperformance and per-forming themselves. Lu-anne Erickson, presidentof the Minot SymphonyAssociation’s board of di-rectors, knows how to getchildren interested.“We want them to be
vested in the concert,”she said. “So back in Oc-tober I sent a letter to areaschools explaining thecenterpiece – ‘Billy theKid Suite’ (by AaronCopeland) – and askedthem to have their stu-dents listen to the musicand produce artwork forus to display during theshow. So from the ‘OpenPrairie’ movement thereare pictures of theprairie.”There is enough to
cover three displayboards, with “Wanted”posters to be placedaround the lobby.“I really want to com-
mend the teachers andschool district for encour-aging the students,” shesaid. “Also Jacobsen’sMusic for providing in-struments for a ‘pettingzoo’ before the concertand during intermission. That allows everyone, adults and children alike,to try their hands at pos-sibly unfamiliar instru-ments.”Performances at 10
a.m. and 1 p.m. on Fridayare free for students, whoare coming from 40schools located from Dev-ils Lake to Watford City, involving some 1,200 to1,500 children altogether.“Each child will re-
ceive a free ticket to theSaturday concert, alongwith a half-price discountticket so they can comeback with a parent,” Er-ickson said. “The kidswill have a real stake in

Dan Sharbono of 62 Doors and CaseyOpstad for theMinot location, althoughOpstad recently moved to New York.“WilliamHarbort – a.k.a. Billy

The concert opens withthe “William Tell Over-ture,” known to many fromthe Lone Ranger televisionseries, and in keeping withthe ‘Dance’ theme of theseason, the performance in-cludes “Clog Dance” from“La Fille Mal Gardeé.”“This is one of the oldest
ballets still performed,” Si-mons said. “And of coursewe have to have the ‘Danceof the Sugar Plum Fairy’ byTchaikovsky. Next is the‘Skaters’ Waltz,’ although
we’re not trying to encour-age winter,” he added, smiling.Closing the evening, he
said, is Khachaturian’s“Sabre Dance.”“You really can’t follow
that with any other piece,”Simons said.Prices vary according to

Life
A week without TVWithout going into a lot
of detail I haven’t watchedany television for more thana week now.True, there’s been some
vacation time. Also, I’vebeen doing somework inmy apartment so the televi-sion has basically beenfacing a wall while that’sbeen going on.So except for some ESPN
while I was doing laundryone night, I’ve been withouttelevision. This might have been a
really bad week to do this. There was the season finaleof “Leverage” on TNT, theseason of “Parks and Recre-ation” resumed – apparentlyfeaturing a guy fromMinot(I caught the episode onHulu.com – thought every-one did a good job). Syfypremiered a new series lastweek called “Lost Girl” thatsounded interesting and thedrama “Alcatraz” soundedvery interesting as well. Also, the new Laura Preponcomedy based on the life oftalk show host Chelsea Han-dler sounded like a hoot, and I’m hoping to catch upwith some of those soon. But beyond finally drag-
ging the television out towhere I could take in theState of the Union addressTuesday night, I hadn’t re-ally felt I’d beenmissingmuch of anything, either. There’s something about
television that feels desper-ate these days. Betweenfragmentedmarkets, tar-geted audiences and crassproduct placement, thetalent competitions andgame shows are all run to
the extreeEEEEEeme andeveryone’s backstory is soheartwarming and every-one’s situations are so des-perate and we’re all rootingfor them ... it gets to be over-load.
Calm downI think what I’d like to see
– and I’d probably be theonly person watching it so itwould fail instantly – is anot-exploitative, not-pre-cious show about an elderlyshopkeeper who’s lived apretty exciting past, andevery week we learn just alittle bit more about her insome exciting action se-quence as she relates someof these adventures to asullen teenage girl whomaybe shoplifted from herand is forced to work offwhat she owes or some-thing, and the girl is kind ofdealing with challenges inher own life as well. The problemwith this is
that it would instantly getthe Hallmark Channel treat-ment where the past adven-tures got to be a little toosanitized and the present-day storyline got to be just alittle too Cabot Cove. Whatwouldmake it work is forthe twomain characters tostart seeing themselves ineach other with flashbacks
to daring car chases and siz-zling romances and infideli-ties and other excitementenergizing what could be alittle too safe and cozy oth-erwise.And again, that would
just be one hour of that kindof programming a week andwe need somuchmoregood programming. This column began its life
as a celebration of whatseemed to be some reallyoutstanding scripted pro-gramming growing out fromwhat seemed to be a back-lash against reality showoverload. The landscape ischanged. Shows aren’t givenan opportunity to find theiraudience, let alone buildone, and the only new pro-gramming ends up beingvariations on cynically suc-cessful themes we’ve allseen amillion times before.Good programs – or not, Imean, who’s given an op-portunity to find out? – areushered off the stage beforethey’re able to finish un-packing their act.So looking ahead, I wish I
could bemore excited bythe offerings out there. Butabout the only innovationanyone’s taking a chancewith in storylines these daysis in cable and the only wayto pull the necessary inter-est for those shows isthrough violence and “adultsituations,” to put it mildly. It’s enough to make you
want to turn your televisionback to facing the wall.
