Life

A week without TVWithout going into a lot

of detail I haven’t watchedany television for more thana week now.True, there’s been some

vacation time. Also, I’vebeen doing somework inmy apartment so the televi-sion has basically beenfacing a wall while that’sbeen going on.So except for some ESPN

while I was doing laundryone night, I’ve been withouttelevision. This might have been a

really bad week to do this. There was the season finaleof “Leverage” on TNT, theseason of “Parks and Recre-ation” resumed – apparentlyfeaturing a guy fromMinot(I caught the episode onHulu.com – thought every-one did a good job). Syfypremiered a new series lastweek called “Lost Girl” thatsounded interesting and thedrama “Alcatraz” soundedvery interesting as well. Also, the new Laura Preponcomedy based on the life oftalk show host Chelsea Han-dler sounded like a hoot, and I’m hoping to catch upwith some of those soon. But beyond finally drag-

ging the television out towhere I could take in theState of the Union addressTuesday night, I hadn’t re-ally felt I’d beenmissingmuch of anything, either. There’s something about

television that feels desper-ate these days. Betweenfragmentedmarkets, tar-geted audiences and crassproduct placement, thetalent competitions andgame shows are all run to

the extreeEEEEEeme andeveryone’s backstory is soheartwarming and every-one’s situations are so des-perate and we’re all rootingfor them ... it gets to be over-load.

Calm downI think what I’d like to see

– and I’d probably be theonly person watching it so itwould fail instantly – is anot-exploitative, not-pre-cious show about an elderlyshopkeeper who’s lived apretty exciting past, andevery week we learn just alittle bit more about her insome exciting action se-quence as she relates someof these adventures to asullen teenage girl whomaybe shoplifted from herand is forced to work offwhat she owes or some-thing, and the girl is kind ofdealing with challenges inher own life as well. The problemwith this is

that it would instantly getthe Hallmark Channel treat-ment where the past adven-tures got to be a little toosanitized and the present-day storyline got to be just alittle too Cabot Cove. Whatwouldmake it work is forthe twomain characters tostart seeing themselves ineach other with flashbacks

to daring car chases and siz-zling romances and infideli-ties and other excitementenergizing what could be alittle too safe and cozy oth-erwise.And again, that would

just be one hour of that kindof programming a week andwe need somuchmoregood programming. This column began its life

as a celebration of whatseemed to be some reallyoutstanding scripted pro-gramming growing out fromwhat seemed to be a back-lash against reality showoverload. The landscape ischanged. Shows aren’t givenan opportunity to find theiraudience, let alone buildone, and the only new pro-gramming ends up beingvariations on cynically suc-cessful themes we’ve allseen amillion times before.Good programs – or not, Imean, who’s given an op-portunity to find out? – areushered off the stage beforethey’re able to finish un-packing their act.So looking ahead, I wish I

could bemore excited bythe offerings out there. Butabout the only innovationanyone’s taking a chancewith in storylines these daysis in cable and the only wayto pull the necessary inter-est for those shows isthrough violence and “adultsituations,” to put it mildly. It’s enough to make you

want to turn your televisionback to facing the wall.
