    Uphams Corner ArtPlace Partners Bring a Variety of Arts and Culture Activities

    To Uphams Corneron Saturday September 14th

    Dorchester, Mass. On Saturday September 14, 2013 Uphams Corner will be the venue for a wide

    variety of family-friendly activities, thanks to the Uphams Corner ArtPlace initiative. ArtPlace in

    Uphams spurs economic development through creative placemaking supported by a collaboration of

    local community partners and funded by The Boston Foundation.

    Auditions for The Nutcrackerat the Kroc Center 10 a.m.

    The day will start off with Childrens Auditions for ArtPlace partner Jos Mateo Ballet Theatres (JMBT)

    26th annual production ofThe Nutcracker- over 500 children statewide are expected to audition for this

    beloved holiday classic! JMBT is looking for 200 children to fill three casts in the roles ofParty Children,

    Mice, Soldiers, Angels, Court Attendants, Polichinelles, and Clara.

    Jose Mateo Ballet Theatres 26th annual production ofThe Nutcrackerwill tour this holiday season to

    The Duxbury Performing Arts Center (November 29-Dec. 1), The Sanctuary Theatre, Cambridge

    (December 5-15), and The Strand Theater, Dorchester (December 21-22). All children cast in the

    production will perform in all three locations.

    WANTED: Children and teenagers ages 6*-18

    *Previous dance experience is not required for children ages 6-10

    Street Lab: UphamsMeet at alleyway between 578 Columbia Road (the Masonic building) and Citizen's Bank, 12 noonThe second ArtPlace in Uphams activity of the day will beStreet Lab: Uphams which starts at noon

    on September 14thin the heart of Uphams Corner. An open lab where community members can join in

    and work with local artists, designers and builders Street Lab will prototype and re-imagine everyday

    aspects of public space with local artists and ArtPlace partner Design Studio for Social Intervention

    (DS4SI) which has been working in public spaces around Upham's Corner over the past year with the aim

    of putting tactical urbanism - quick, often temporary, affordable projects that can help make a locale

    more livable, lively, or enjoyable - in the hands of the community. Street Lab: Uphamswill happen on

    consecutive Saturdays - Sept. 14, 21, 28, Oct. 5, 12 - from noon-5 p.m.

    DS4SI is looking for local makers and artists of all sorts, stipends are available for those who are

    experienced makers from the greater Uphams area who can join in the action for at least four Saturdays please visit ds4si.org for further details.

    Up Market: Open air market at 559 Columbia Rd., 1pmAt 1 p.m., the third in ArtPlace in Uphams successful open air market pilot series the Up Market will

    again present local food, artwork and handicrafts for sale on Columbia Road. Dubbed Up Market this

    successful opportunity for local artists and artisans to sell their work started during DSNIs popular

    MultiCultural Fair on August 10. The second open air market was part of the popular annual Uphams

    Corner Street Festival held on Stoughton Street on Saturday August 17. The third Up Market will take

    place on September 14th from 1 to 5 p.m. in the parking lot at #559 Columbia Road next to Bank of

    America (corner of Cushing Avenue). The final Up Market happens on October 19 th during Dorchester

    Open Studios.

    Were very excited that the Up Market pilot series has proven to be such a success,and to see arts and

    cultural activities flourishing here, said Max MacCarthy, executive director of Uphams Corner Main

    Street, an ArtPlace partner organization. We look forward to lots more fun, celebratory events in

    September, and in October during the Dorchester Open Studios weekend.
