“Celebrating a Rich Past:

Making a Difference In The Future

Message from the President

Greeting my fellow Astorians,

Welcome to spring of 2018, hopefully everyone had a great Easter.

First, I would like to thank the Astorians who attended the book tasting affair at J.L. Francis

Elementary School on April 20,2018. We were greeted by the school Principle Ms. Kecia Ryan,

and the Tile 1 Reading team Ms. Tanji Wyatt, Ms. Kelly Crowder. Astorian Charles

"Jake” Woodie read to the Kindergarten class and helped serve the food samples. Other

members helping to serve was Allan J. Foster Sr. and Marvin S. Tart Sr. Thanks to brother

Woodie the school has invited us back to attend another affair they may have. Thank- you guys

for helping to get Astoria name out into the community.

Is this 2018 or before 1964? This is why Astoria was formed in Aug of 1901 due to racial issues. I

am referring to the Starbucks incident on 04/15/18. The company is closing 8,000 stores for

racial bias training on 05/29/18.

We still need to unite and stand together to protect our rights.

Remember our annual picnic and upcoming Raffle drawing to be held in July

In Unity

Sincerely

Jonathan G. Johnson-President

CELEBRATING A RICH PAST: MAKING A DIFFERENCE IN THE FUTURE

Organized August 8, 2001

The remarkable tradition of the Astoria Beneficial Club, Inc. began on August 8, 1901 by 22 men who believed in firm religious values, high moral standards, intellectual growth, civic and

social responsibility.  Astoria also became a club of vision and recognized that the barriers to full citizenship eventually could be eliminated with patience, planning and timely action.

Astoria has earned a significant place in Richmond’s history because of the vision of its founders. They believed that the barriers to full citizenship could be eliminated with patience, planning and timely action. Their vision became the guiding light for a rich history of pioneer efforts to gain voting rights, equal opportunity employment and to end segregation of public eating facilities. The Astoria creed has inspired outstanding men from every walk of life to

"higher moral, intellectual, civic and social standing" for almost a century.

Editorial [email protected]

I've always been attracted to happy people for the selfish reason they put me in a better humor. Call me a cockeyed optimist, but I just don't enjoy cynics and doomsayers, so I stay clear of them.

Well, a respected British medical journal called BMJ has published a 20-year study of 4,700 people which shows that happiness is not only good for you, it is actually contagious.

It spreads like the flu!

The researchers told the Washington Post that happiness is far more potent than just making another person laugh. The study shows that when one person in a group is happy, it increases the possibility - sometimes by as much as 34 percent - that others in the group will also be happy; everyone from a spouse to a next-door neighbor, and the impact can be long-lasting.

With the state of the news these days, we're finding this out not a moment too soon, so I'm happy to know it - and pardon me for being smug, but another thing that always makes me happy is knowing I was right.

Former San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick celebrated Jackie Robinson Day by tweeting out the baseball legends famous quote.

“I cannot stand and sing the National Anthem. I cannot salute the flag; I know that I am a Black man in a white world. On April 15, 1947, Jackie Robinson broke the color barrier by becoming the first Black man to play in Major League Baseball. The quote comes from Robinson’s autobiography I Never Had It Made.PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Starbucks sells itself as a community gathering spot as much as a coffeehouse, a welcoming place with comfortable chairs for lingering, trendy music and Wi-Fi. That’s one reason the arrest of two black men who were sitting in a Starbucks struck a nerve for so many: They were doing exactly what people do at most any of the chain’s 28,000 stores worldwide. The CEO of Starbucks Co., Kevin Johnson, called the arrests a “reprehensible outcome” and said he wants to personally apologize to the men, saying the company “stands firmly against discrimination or racial profiling.” But that didn’t stop protesters from gathering Sunday outside the store in downtown Philadelphia where the arrests occurred.“It is a shame that (in) the year 2018 we’re still putting up with this mess, this country was built on the backs of black and brown people and now Starbucks is going to treat us like we’re second-class.

Health News;Apple Cider Vinegar Benefits Your Health

More research is needed to definitively link apple cider vinegar and its capability to lower cholesterol in humans, but one 2006 study found that the acetic acid in the vinegar lowered bad cholesterol in rats. Also, a Japanese study found that half an ounce of apple cider vinegar a day lowered cholesterol in people who participated in the panel.

A few swigs of apple cider vinegar could help keep your blood sugar levels balanced, according to several studies that have shown a link between the two. One study of people with type 2 diabetes who weren't taking insulin found that taking two tablespoons of apple cider vinegar before bed resulted in lower glucose levels by morning. Another study at the Arizona State University found that insulin resistant people who drank a mixture of apple cider vinegar and water before eating a high carbohydrate meal had lower blood sugar afterward. Scientists think the antiglycemic effect of the apple cider vinegar benefits these patients most.
