As Boulder City Art
Guild begins its fifth
decade promoting art
in southern Nevada,
planning is under-
way to continue this
mission during the
2017-2018 fiscal
year. The Guild has
taken a black and
white drawing
and filled in with
vibrant colors to
create an amaz-
ing organization
of dedicated art-
ists and art sup-
porters. The
growing member-
ship is provided
with many oppor-
tunities to dis-
play art; in the
gallery, at out-
side exhibits, during
art shows… and to
participate as a vol-
unteer within com-
mittees that make it
all happen. BCAG
membership consists
of artists who color
our world with art in
diverse mediums.
Many in our mem-
bership are also art
instructors – in paint-
ing, sculpture, wood,
ceramics, mosaics, pa-
per art, glass and
more. Guild artists
not only educate oth-
ers in art, but also in-
spire. Art by guild
artists adds color to
the local landscape
with murals; provides
enjoyment at Boulder
City Hospital; gives a
taste of the west at
Hoover Dam Lodge;
and offers a glimpse
of history at BC City
Hall. The Guild plans
and hosts many artful
events throughout the
year that add color to
your world. Coming
just around the bend is
the Guild’s Winter Art-
Fest held in November
at the BC Parks & Rec-
reation gym. This in-
door arts & crafts show
coincides with a fine art
raffle to raise funds for
the BCAG scholarship
fund. The event is fun
to attend and begin hol-
iday shopping! For
more about the Guild’s
plans for this year, see
inside this issue of Art-
ful Accents. The world
is not black and white,
but full of color. Let
Boulder City Art Guild
brighten and color your
world, because…
... ART MATTERS!

EDUCATION MATTERS by Susan Richardson Kaumans
The education committee will be meeting within the first two weeks of August, exact date to be deter-mined, to begin planning for the Fall semester of the class and lecture program. I am hoping for a simple start that is manageable and has the success of the drawing class we recently offered. I am looking for teachers to add to a “faculty list.” If interested new teachers, or teachers previously engaged by the Guild, would please Email me at [email protected] with curriculum interests and even a possible syllabus plan, I will start gathering data to present a catalog of courses and events for our Guild Education programs. I encourage all interested teachers to contact me so we can start to get the best Art Education program the Guild has produced! Thank you in advance for your willingness to step up and take our Guild to the pinnacle I know it can reach. Art is needed. I used to own a button for my school backpack that said “You Gotta Have Art”. I think that should be our motto.

“A mosaic is a piece of art or image made from the assemblage of small pieces of colored glass, stone, or other materials. It is often used in decorative art or as inte-rior decoration. Mosaics have a long history, starting in Mesopotamia in the 3rd millennium BC.” As civilizations grew, so did the mosaic art form which could been seen throughout Europe and the Middle East as flooring, walls, hanging art and much more. Peggy Christian was introduced to art at an early age after watching her mother, BCAG member Helen Green, create oil portraits and landscapes, which hung on the walls of their California home. Peggy’s mother and grandmother are from Cherokee heritage and exposed Peggy to various Native American art forms. Peggy always loved the shimmer and shine of glass and decided to create art in stained glass, and she is still fascinated with the way glass reflects and refracts light. Even-tually Peggy discovered the ancient art form of mosaics and decided to work in this medium after retiring from working in law firms. In her mosaic art, Peggy works with glass, Italian smalti, stone and rock. At the annual Las Vegas Glass Expo, Peggy placed first in amateur mosaics in 2007, and she placed second in the professional division in 2016. Peggy continued her mosaic education in Chicago and studied with Italian master mosaicists, Dino Maccini and Matteo Randi on an international level. Peggy’s mosaic designs take on an abstract style with a nature influence. She takes mosaic art beyond the two dimensional using a cow skull as the base for the mosaic glass—and what an astounding piece results! Peggy also enjoys acrylic painting in a modern theme—and always adds her signature glass to the artwork. Her professional sales are increasing, as well as the size and difficulty of her work. Peggy has been represented in art galleries and has taught mosaic workshops for the past five years. She is thrilled when her students carry on the tradition and say they look at the world differently now. “The rewards of mosaics far outweigh the painstaking hours of work involved.” Peggy’s dream would be to travel to Italy and to continue teaching the medium of mosaic art.
ART HOUSE Las Vegas By Jan Arduini
Over the past several months gallery directors, Jan Arduini, Julie Townsend and Becca Weeks, of City of the World Inc., have enthusiastically been working on remodeling and re-branding the gallery. To date the gallery looks fabulous and response to the changes have been very positive. Since the building is an his-toric 1940's railroad house, we have developed a new logo that presents the gallery as an ART HOUSE which is exactly what it is. Art House LV is a project of City of the World, a 501 c (3) non-profit organization that produces, promotes and celebrates the arts. We host a variety of classes, special events and paint parties. About 25 emerging, as well as established artists and artisans show their work in the gallery. We have a Student's Gallery that showcases art from various schools in the Las Vegas area. Everyone is encouraged to visit the Art House and experience the gallery upgrade for themselves. We are open Wednesday & Thursday 1- 5 pm, Friday & Saturday 11 – 7, Sunday 1 -5. Like us on Facebook @ArtHouseLV or follow us on Instagram @arthouselv to learn more about what we are continuing to do to artfully enrich our community.

Carol has been a member of the Boulder City Art Guild Gallery since 2010 and has been showing
her photography at the Spring Art Show and the Winter Art Fest for the past 5 years. Recently Carol took a trip to Italy, where she enjoyed visiting cities such as Rome, Vatican City, Venice, Florence, Pompeii, Assisi, Pisa, Sorrento, Capri, and Positano. Spotlight on Artist, Barbara Merchant Stained Glass Art
Colored glass has been made since ancient times. Both the Egyptians and the Romans manufactured small colored glass objects. Stained glass gained recognition as a “Christian art form” sometime in the fourth century as Christians began to build churches. The spread of Christianity throughout Europe is di-rectly related to the expansion of stained glass across the globe and made stained glass the dominant art form of the new millennium. Artists from different parts of the world continued to experiment with new techniques and designs to create their glass artwork which led to a new golden age of stained glass, and Barbara Merchant is one of those artists. In 2006, a desire to enhance windows with stained glass in her home, Barbara attended classes at UNLV, as custom stained glass work was unaffordable. It was love at first cut! In her classes she produced small windows, then larger windows and through all of this, her husband had been a partner in the learning and production process. She started receiving requests from friends for sun catchers with specific subject re-quirements. This led her to designing her own patterns. With her art background, the hobby be-came a full time profession. Her custom design pieces can range from 12” x 12” to larger pieces of 4’ x 6’. Barbara has even incorporated slices of geodes in her
work, which is where she de-rived the name of her company: Those In Glass Houses! What a colorful world we have become and it has been enhanced by Barbara Merchant’s beautiful works in stained glass.
Photos above showcase the process Barbara uses: # 1 - Layout with a metal strip jig to maintain size. # 2 - After pattern created, transferred to glass, the cut-ting begins. Edges of each piece are taped with copper foil and laid in place. # 3: After soldering both sides joining the glass pieces, a black patina is applied to the shiny solder. # 4: Finished piece installed in customers home.
