This month we will be celebrating St. Joseph’s Day again with our annual dinner/dance, on Thursday, March 14th. This event and our annual picnic in April are the two main fundraisers for the scholarships we present in June. The St. Joseph’s Dinner is always attended by 100 or more guests because they know that it is always a great night. Dr Mangla and Dr. Papa will be our

guest speakers at the March 6th meeting. The topics will be Regenerative Medicine, stem cell and PRP therapies, which are ways to combat many medical and aging problems. PRP stands for Platelet Rich Plasma. Our picnic this year is on Sunday, April 7th, and it will be a pot-luck affair as many of you have requested. It was a hit last year because we had a delicious variety of foods produced by our very talented cooks of our lodge. Details for these events are on page 2. European Commissioner for Transport Violeta Bulc on Friday, Sept 14, 2018 announced that the EU will stop the twice-yearly changing of clocks across the continent in October 2019.The practice, which was used as a means to conserve energy during the World Wars as well as the oil crises of the 1970s, became law across the bloc in 1996.All EU countries are required to move forward by an hour on the last Sunday of March and back by an hour on the final Sunday in October.Bulc said EU member states would have until April 2019 to decide whether they would permanently remain on summer or winter time. Bulc said she was counting on member states and the European Parliament to keep pace with the Commission’s “ambitious” schedule. She also noted the need to find consensus among the member states in order to avoid confusing time jumps. The plan also raises the prospect of neighboring countries ending up an hour apart.

EUROPEAN UNION - ENDS DAYLIGHT SAVING TIME “In order to maintain a harmonized approach we are encouraging consultations at national levels to ensure a coordinated approach of all member states,” Bulc said.The decision to tackle the issue was prompted after the Commission launched an online survey. Some 4.6 million Europeans answered the survey-three million of those respondents were from Germany - with 80 percent of them voting to scrap the practice. Though critics say that is only a small percentage of the bloc’s population, the European Commission argues it is doing what voters expect of it: dealing with big issues.

St. Joseph’s Day is cel-ebrated all over the world. In Sicily, partici-pants usually wear red and build what is known as “St. Joseph’s Table.” This table is often deco-rated with flowers and candles, and people place

wine and foods on it that are considered lucky. Some of these lucky foods include fava beans, lemons, and other foods that contain breadcrumbs. All of these foods have symbolic meanings. Fava beans were the only things that survived a drought during the Middle Ages in Italy – which is why it is considered lucky. Breadcrumbs are worked into the recipes of the dishes because St. Joseph was a carpenter and the breadcrumbs represent sawdust. Some people place fish and seafood on the altar

On St. Joseph’s Day, St. Joseph’s Tables are built both for the public and by private individuals. These altars are then filled with a

variety of different foods – just like the celebrations in Sicily – however, these foods usually have somewhat of a Cajun twist to them. Afterward, all of the food is then usually donated to the poor. New Orleans also has a variety of parades and marching bands performing on the streets during this day.St. Joseph’s Day is also traditionally celebrated in many other American communities, particularly those who have large Italian populations. This includes cities such as New York, Syracuse, Buffalo, Jersey City, Chicago, Gloucester, Providence, Kansas City and St. Louis. Expert engineering is straightening the world-famous Leaning Tower of Pisa. “We installed a number of tubes underground, on the side that the Tower leans away from,” explained Roberto Cela, Technical Director of Opera della Primaziale Pisana, an organization that oversees Pisa’s main monuments. “We removed soil by drilling very carefully. Thanks to this system, we recovered half a degree of lean.” The 186-foot Leaning Tower, which was constructed during the Middle Ages in 1173, began

leaning because the ground it was built upon proved to be too soft. In 1990, the Leaning Tower was closed to the public for 11 years because of safety concerns over its tilt, which had reached 15 feet from vertical. Thanks to an international committee’s work, the tower straightened 16 inches from 1993 until it reopened to the public in 2001. Since then, it has straightened another 1.5 inches.Measuring the tower’s lean is nothing new, however. Annual measurements go back as far as 1911, and today’s measurements can occur as frequently as once every hour. But no matter how much attention is given to the tower, its world-famous lean will, according to Cela, “never be completely straight.” Of course, the objective is to make it safe for tourists to visit - not straight so they no longer have anything to hold up.
