Poke a small hole in the center. Use scrap paper to add the pistil and the stamen. 4. Use scrap pieces of paper plates or tissue paper to add interesting foliage. Bend, fold, curl or fringe scrap pieces and glue into place. 5. Repeat this process using the 9” plate. Use the 6” x 6” paper square for the center. 6. Place both flowers and the added foliage on a 9” x 12” piece of colored construction paper. Arrange and glue the pieces into place to complete the picture.

PROJECT: Fabulous Florals TIME NEEDED: 2 class periods GRADE LEVEL ART ELEMENTS PRINCIPALS OF DESIGN Junior High Line Balance Form Emphasis Shape Unity Texture

MATERIALS - 9” x 12” colored construction paper - 6” paper plates (1 per student – not Styrofoam or coated) - 9” paper plates (1 per student – not Styrofoam or coated) - 4” x 4” white paper square - 6” x 6” white paper square - scrap tissue paper (all colors) - glue - scissors - pencil

PROCEDURE 1. View pictures of flowers and floral arrangements. Study compositions by Monet, Van

Gogh, or Renoir. 2. Draw a flower shape on the small paper plate and cut out with the scissors. Save the

scrap pieces of the paper plate. Make a cut towards the center of the flower shape. Pull the edges of the cut piece together, overlap, and glue. This will create a three-dimensional flower shape.

3. Take the 4” x 4” paper square and make another flower – see Step 2. Place this flower in

the center of the first flower. Poke a small hole in the center. Use scrap paper to add the pistil and the stamen.

ART - LESSON PLAN

PROJECT: Line to Sculpture TIME NEEDED: 3 class periods GRADE LEVEL ART ELEMENTS PRINCIPALS OF DESIGN Junior High Line Contrast Form Balance Shape Emphasis Texture Unity

MATERIALS - 8 ½ ” x 11” Xerox copy paper - black fine line markers

* NOTE: Teacher will need access to a copy machine for this project.

- glue - scissors - pencils - paper cutter - scrap pieces of mat board or cardboard – 8 ½” x 11”

PROCEDURE 1. Discuss different types and kinds of lines, such as zigzag, curved, spiral, dotted, wavy,

etc. Draw examples on the board. 2. Fold the 8 ½” x 11” piece of paper into eighths. Unfold and flatten the paper. 3. Draw a different pattern of lines in each of the eight sections with a black fine line

marker. Vary the thickness of the lines to create interest.

4. Make 6 copies of the finished work on a copy machine (save the original). Cut the eight

sections apart with a paper cutter. 5. Roll each rectangle section tightly around a pencil to form a tube. Use a drop of glue to

hold it together. Make tubes out of the remaining pieces of paper. 6. Cover the 8 ½” x 11” mat board or cardboard with the original 8-sectioned line design.

This will be the base on which to build the tube sculpture. 7. Glue the tubes, one by one, to the base and to each other until you have an interesting

three-dimensional paper sculpture.

PROJECT: Aqua Paint Doodles TIME NEEDED: 90-120 minutes GRADE LEVEL ART ELEMENTS PRINCIPALS OF DESIGN Primary Color Balance Intermediate Line Contrast Junior High Shape Emphasis Texture Rhythm Unity

MATERIALS - 9” x 9” white paper - black fine point maker (permanent) - water based markers - water cups - small brushes - paper towels or wet wipes - scrap laminate pieces (optional)

PROCEDURE 1. Discuss designs, patterns, shapes, and textures. 2. Cover the paper with free-flowing line doodles using a black fine point marker. Specific

objects may be chosen to incorporate into the doodle. For example: leaf, sun, flower, insect, etc.

3. Select areas to paint. 4. Color a one-inch square (or circle) with water-based marker on the table or desk. (You

could also use any water repellant surface, such as laminate scrap pieces.) 5. Wet the paint brush, touch to the marker square, and you have instant watercolor paint!

Add paint to selected areas of your doodle design. 6. Clean surface with a paper towel or wet wipe and change the marker color. (Repeat Step

5, cleaning the brush each time.) 7. Continue to “paint” areas of your design until satisfied with the composition.

PROJECT: Paint a Pet TIME NEEDED: 4 class periods GRADE LEVEL ART ELEMENTS PRINCIPALS OF DESIGN Intermediate Color Balance Junior High Line Contrast Shape Emphasis Texture

MATERIALS - pencils - scrap paper - tempera paint – assorted colors - brushes - cups for water - paper plates (for mixing paint) - paper towels - 9” x 9” white paper - pictures of pets

PROCEDURE 1. Class 1. Look at pictures of animals and pets. Show students how to draw animals using

lines and shapes. Sketch pets on scrap paper with pencil. Add texture and details to the drawing.

2. Class 2. Transfer the sketch to the 9” x 9” white paper. The picture may be the full body

or just the head of the pet.

3. Class 3. Begin the painting process. Set up cups with water. Put small amounts of

tempera paint on a paper plate. Mix colors directly on the paper plate with a brush and then apply to the paper.

4. Class 4. Continue painting the picture. Add details for interest. Let dry. Mat on

construction paper or tagboard.

ART - LESSON PLAN

PROJECT: Recycled “Bottle Fish” TIME NEEDED: 1 class period GRADE LEVEL ART ELEMENTS PRINCIPALS OF DESIGN Primary Color Contrast Intermediate Line Rhythm Form Unity

MATERIALS - 2 liter clear soda bottle - black fine point marker - permanent - acrylic craft paint (assorted colors) - water cups - brushes - fishing line - paper clips - stapler - scissors - large-eyed needle - egg carton or paper plate (for the acrylic paint)

PROCEDURE 1. Prepare the soda bottle by rinsing and removing the label. Let dry. 2. Cut off the bottom portion of the soda bottle. Cut the end into a fishtail shape. (This step

should be done by the teacher or adult helper.) 3. Draw interesting patterns on the outside of the bottle with a black permanent marker.

Include a face, scales, and fins.

4. Put acrylic paint in an egg carton or on a paper plate (use this as your paint palette). Paint

the areas drawn with marker from the INSIDE of the bottle. Start with the bottle top and work towards the open end. Clean brush with water and change paint colors for different areas of the fish.

5. The completed “Bottle Fish” can be hung for display. Tie fishing line to a paper clip.

Thread the other end through a needle. Poke the needle through a hole INSIDE the top of the fish and pull the fishing line until the paper clip catches.

6. Staple the end of the fish tail.

PROJECT: “Stained Glass” Mandalas TIME NEEDED: 1-2 class periods GRADE LEVEL ART ELEMENTS PRINCIPALS OF DESIGN Intermediate Color Balance Junior High Line Rhythm Shape Unity

MATERIALS - old CD - black fine point marker - permanent - colored fine point markers – assorted colors (permanent) - ruler - compass (optional) - pencils - scrap paper - hot glue gun and glue stick - construction paper (for mounting)

PROCEDURE 1. Introduce students to what a mandala is by visiting http://www.mandalaproject.org 2. View and study mandalas and discuss art elements and principals of design. 3. Discuss symmetry, particularly radial symmetry. Radial symmetry is a design based on a

circle with the features radiating from a central point. 4. Trace around a CD on scrap paper with a pencil. Find the center of the circle and mark it with a dot (a). Divide the circle in half horizontally and vertically (b). Divide the circle into eighths (c).

5. Create a design in the 1/8 “pie piece.” Repeat the design in each section (d).

6. Transfer the scrap paper design to the CD using a black fine point marker. Color spaces

and shapes with colored markers.

PROJECT: Button Print TIME NEEDED: 2 class periods GRADE LEVEL ART ELEMENTS PRINCIPALS OF DESIGN Intermediate Color Balance Line Contrast Shape Rhythm Texture Unity

MATERIALS - buttons (raised surfaces and distinct patterns work best) - white craft blue or glue gun - wine corks or pieces of scrap wood - inked stamp pads – a variety of colors - variety of papers - newspapers and paper towels to use as padding - glitter and/or glitter pens

PROCEDURE 1. Select buttons with unusual shapes and patterns. 2. Glue the button on the end of a cork or piece of scrap wood. The button should be wider

than the cork or wood piece so that you can position it as you print. Let dry. 3. Make a pad out of newspaper and paper towels. Place paper on the pad. 4. Press the button on the inked stamp pad. Now, press the inked button onto the paper, rocking it gently to include the edges. 5. Practice with several different button shapes. Create a picture or card with the inked button shapes. 6. When the print is dry, embellish the design with markers, glitter, or glitter pens.

ART - LESSON PLAN

PROJECT: Foil Mono-Print Frame TIME NEEDED: 2 class periods GRADE LEVEL ART ELEMENTS PRINCIPALS OF DESIGN Primary Color Balance Line Contrast Shape Rhythm

MATERIALS - 9” x 12” white paper - aluminum foil (the sheet of foil should be slightly larger than the white paper) - tape - tempera paint - small containers or paper plates to hold paint - paint brushes - water cups - paper towels

PROCEDURE 1. Talk about lines and simple shapes. Draw examples on the board. 2. Explain mono-printing. It is a very simple printmaking technique. Only one print is

made. The design will be the reverse of what is painted on the foil surface. 3. Secure a piece of foil to a desk or table top with tape. 4. Dip a brush in paint and paint lines and shapes around the four sides of the foil. Move in from the edge of the foil and make sure it is not “outside” the 9” x 12” paper dimensions. 5. Place the white paper on the printed frame. Smooth over the surface with your hand. Carefully pull the paper from one corner. Let dry. 6. Add a picture to the frame by drawing directly in the open area of the mono-print. Or, glue a picture in the center of the frame.
