From the Principal’s desk Orientation Day Last Tuesday a very excited group of Year 6 students attended their Orientation Day at Kyogle High School. Thank you to Ms Mobbs, staff and Peer Support Leaders who provided mini lessons and support throughout the day to ensure the students are prepared for Year 7 2018. Head Teacher Special Education I am pleased to formally welcome Mr Nathan Chadderton to the position of Head Teacher Special Education. Year 10 – New Directions Program Thank you to Ms Rachael Rasborsek for all the hard work ensuring that the New Direction Program continued to be so successful this year. The objective of the New Direction Program is to help create a smoother transition for students into Year 11 & 12 while providing the opportunity for students to display quality and authentic evidence of learning, explore possible career choices based on their personal strengths, develop skills in communication, decision making, organisation, socialisation, self-discipline and interview skills. Well done Year 10. Class Allocation Process 2018 Year 7-10 Students will be allocated to classes by the Year Adviser with input from the School Executive. The following criteria will be used to ensure that the classes that are formed are in the best interests of ALL the students. These criteria are not in order of importance.

Friendships - students who need support from another close friend.

Friendships - students who are too friendly with another student and are best separated so both students can

concentrate on their studies.

Behaviour needs - students who are best separated so their learning and the learning of other students is not

affected.

Language - students who need to be together to provide language support for each other.

Learning Difficulties - students who are experiencing difficulties are allocated between available classes so they

can be withdrawn in small groups for specialist support.

Special Needs - these may be social, intellectual, emotional or physical.

Cultural Balance - each class is formed to have a range of nationalities and cultures.

Personalities - in some special cases the personalities of both teachers and students are considered before a

decision is made regarding the placement of a student.

Gender Balance - we also like to keep a balance of boys and girls in each class.

Consideration is given to whether a teacher and student have been together before.

As well as the above criteria, all classes will be formed to be academically and socially balanced.

Sports Award Assembly Yesterday’s Sports Assembly was a wonderful celebration of the Sporting successes of our students. A special thank

you to Ms Lisa Radley for the organisation but more so the huge effort she has put into our school in terms of internal

and external sport. We wish Ms Radley all the best with her maternity leave in 2018.

Have a very Merry Christmas and a safe holiday period. Regards Gae Masters

KEEP Here at Kyogle High School we are proud to support our partner primary schools and their students by running the Kyogle Engagement and Enrichment Program (KEEP) every year. This program involves special lessons presented by selected teachers throughout the year and culminates in these selected students developing and presenting a Personal Interest Project (PIP). This year the theme for students to research was ‘Reaching for the Stars’.

On Monday November 27, the completed PIPs were presented by KEEP students in a major presentation day in our school hall. The day was a great success with the wide range of high quality research undertaken delivered within very engaging and visually exciting ICT driven and hands-on presentations. It was great to see many parents were able to come in throughout the day and provide a bigger audience and offer further support. These students have clearly shown the rewards that can be achieved when high expectations are implemented within a quality learning environment - such as the one provided by the KEEP program.

It was very rewarding to support these students over many days during the year and to be able to witness the final outcome of all their focused efforts.

Warm regards from the KEEP Team.

AGRICULTURE Primary Industries World Skills Competition On Tuesday the 28

th of November Lindsay Carter competed in

the World Skills competition for Primary Industries at Woodlawn College. Lindsay was judged over three categories; fencing, tractor operations and livestock handling. A total of 18 students competed from 5 different schools. The day provided a good opportunity to network with other students studying Primary Industries and to demonstrate and learn skills taught within the Primary Industries course. I commend Lindsay for taking the opportunity to participate in this event and challenging himself to develop the required skills to a high level.

Rural Scholars Summer School

Thomas Masters, Year 11, was fortunate enough to gain a scholarship to attend The Rural Scholars Summer School at The University of New England (UNE) in Armidale.

The Rural Scholars Summer School is open to anyone 16 years and over who is interested in pursuing a career in medicine, and lives in a rural, remote or low-SES area.

Throughout the Summer School, attendees will experience the town of Armidale, the University Colleges and ultimately what it is like to be a Rural Medicine student with our school. Congratulations to Tom, we are sure you enjoyed the experience!
