The descriptions written by some of the participants who were induced to a prevention-
focused state of mind in Study 1b were as follows:
“Duties have thronged from all aspects of life as we grew up. Concerns related to career,
life, relationships, status have come into picture. We feel more responsible towards society
and family.”“When I was child I was not aware of my responsibilities, but today I want to
work for the growth of my country.” “When I was young, my only duties were to study, but
now it is not only about education. Now I feel [the need] to make a higher social impact with
my duties.” “In my teens, I thought of caring for myself. But now when I came here, I came to
know about my social duties, such as contributing something good to society.”

“When growing up, I was hoping to live a rich and luxurious life. Now I only want to be
happy and comfortable in life.” “The hopes then were different, like to play or getting marks,

different. While growing up, we have many fantasies, which we take up as our dream task.
Now, my hopes and aspirations depend on my interest, rather than on my dreams which look
luxurious.”“In childhood, I used to get full marks in exams and in B. Tech, I understood that
not only marks were important, but also getting into extracurricular [activities] was also
important. This was an important aspiration I got from B. Tech.”
