Dear Arrowhead Families ~ First of all, thank you to all of you for your generosity with our annual holiday drive for Copley Community Outreach. The lobby is filled with hundreds of canned goods, hats, gloves, and toys. I am always amazed with how much compassion and caring the students and families at our school demonstrate on a regular basis. The support we get on this project just further illuminates how fortunate we all are to live in this community. Secondly, we recently received our results from the fall administration of the O.A.A. and are extremely pleased to announce that we had 80% passage. This assess- ment is given in the fall to all Ohio third graders and covers material that third graders are expected to master by the end of their third grade year. I would like to thank all of our Arrowhead students, teacher and families for all of their continued hard work and support of our academic program. PTA and I are working diligently on improving our indoor recess game supply. We have recently purchased a bunch of new games and are in the process of creating game bins for each class to help us better organize all of the materials we utilize on days that we are stuck inside for recess. Please remember that as “Old Man Winter” sends the cold air our way that we do go outside as long as both the temperature and wind chill are above twenty degrees. Once the snow is flying, students are encour- aged to play in the snow at recess as long as they have snow pants, and boots in addition to their other winter gear. If they do not have these items, the must stay on the blacktop and mulch area. Finally, I just want to say thank you to all of you who have volunteered your time at our school in the past year. We are very fortunate to have such a dedicated group of parents and community members who make Arrowhead such a unique and won- derful school. Events like this months “Holiday Shoppe” would not be possible with- out you. I hope everyone’s children enjoyed getting gifts for their families at the Holiday Shop! That shop represents an enormous amount ofwork by PTA volunteers. While many schools hire companies to provide the products, we have a team of shoppers that goes out andfinds excellent deals. This provides the kids with the best possible selection of quality merchandise. A big thanks to all of the peoplewho worked so hard to make it happen this year, including Billie Boyle, Stephanie O’Connor and Ann McCord, among many others.

I am pleased to report that PTA has chosen our school’s Outstanding Educator and Helping Hands volunteer winners! OutstandingEducator went to second-grade teacher Nadine Draper and Helping Hands went to PTA first vice president Melody Hunter. We thank them both for their years of dedicated service to our school and our students! We are lucky to have them.

PTA is working on providing new games to all the classrooms for indoor recess. Thanks to those who have donated items! The kidsreally appreciate having fun choices at recess. We would be thrilled to get any more donations of games that can be played in about20 minutes. Many of the school’s existing games are missing pieces, etc. Please email me at [email protected] if you are interested incontributing to this fun goal.

Have a super Christmas break!

The character trait for December is

COMPASSIONGifts Of Compassion Can Make A World Of Difference

Every year at this time, our thoughts turn to those less fortunate than ourselves. For two weeks starting the Tuesday after Thanksgiving(November 29 through December 15), we will have our annual community drives. These activities benefit families living in our ownschool district.

• The “Giving Tree” will be in the lobby to collect NEW hats, scarves, and mittens.• The collection box for NEW UNWRAPPED toys will be in the front hallway. We work with the Copley Police Department to ensure that every child receives something special during this holiday season.

• Another collection box in the lobby is for CLEAN gently used winter coats and jackets for adults and children. The Copley Outreach is the recipient of these garments.

• The “Canned Food Drive” is in conjunction with Copley Kiwanis. Arrowhead’s Student Council will be helping promote the food drive this year. Please note that only non-perishable items are appropriate. Grade levels will compete to show their compassion by filling the collection boxes in their classrooms.

Last year over two hundred children, who may not have received anything at all under their trees, awoke to find an assortment of toysand gift items. We are asking families to help make someone’s Christmas special by donating any of these items. All of these items willbe shared among Copley families to see that their holidays are special.

Kids can learn compassion for each other.Compassion is the ability to understand another person’s suffer-ing and the desire to alleviate it. Grade school kids have manyopportunities to show and experience compassion during every-day activities in the classroom, lunchroom or recess. They canalso benefit from specific activities that help them develop andpractice compassion with each other. Since children come fromdifferent backgrounds, classroom compassion activities may be ahelpful supplement to what they learn at home.

DiscussTalk about what compassion is and how to show it to others.Spend some time during the day just on the topic of compassionand be ready to talk about it if a situation arises that asks for orrequires compassion. Many kids have experienced compassionand display it without formal instruction. When you talk aboutcompassion and how it helps people, share personal stories andask the children to share their experiences in giving or receivingcompassion. Ask them what stops them from showing compas-sion, if they feel everyone deserves compassion and to whom theyhave shown compassion.

ModelShow compassion for children when they are hurt or feeling bad.Children learn from the people around them all of the time, especially parents and teachers. Caron Goode, founder of theAcademy for Coaching Parents International, notes that compas-sion is first learned at home. Talk about the benefits of compas-sion and how good it feels to care for others.

VolunteerVolunteer with your grade school kid to put compassion intoaction. Develop a routine to exercise compassion in the class-room or at home. Kids can care for others by donating to a char-ity, visiting residents of a nursing home, reading to younger kids, tending to animals in a shelter, helping a person who is home-bound, donating clothes or toys to other children or visiting kidsin a children's hospital.

The Best Gift You Can Give Your Child ~ TIME

The most precious gift you can give your child is the gift of time. This holiday season, think of ways you can build in more time tospend with your children. Here are some ideas:

Schedule a regular family outing. One family goes to a movie on a Saturday afternoon, then stops for pizza on the way home.Another athletic family schedules something active every Sunday. One week, they go on a bike ride. The next week they may goskating.

What you do isn’t important - but consistency is. Write down your family outing on the calendar and treat it as important event.Find ways for one-on-one time with each child. It is important to have the whole family together. But, it’s also important foreach child to get some individual attention.

One mom takes a different child with her as she runs errands. The reward, a stop for ice cream. Another busy dad gets up early onSaturday and makes breakfast for his son.

Go to your child’s activities. When you get a schedule of your child’s games, or performances, write try to make it to most of them.Children love looking in the audience and seeing your face. (reprinted with permission from the Parent Institute)

News from the Greenhouse Even though nature appears to have gone to sleep fora time, activities in the greenhouse continue to go fullswing.

All classes grades 1 through 4 learned about plants inNovember. The children discussed plant needs and drewa picture illustrating all the factors necessary for thehealthy growth of plants. They also read a paragraphabout a stormy day, written from the perspective of achild. The students were then challenged to write aboutthe same day, but from the perspective of a plant! Wehave many budding writers at Arrowhead! Our gardenersalso learned the different ways seeds get dispersed innature. Lastly, the children studied photosynthesis, theprocess by which green plants make their own food, andcolored a picture illustrating photosynthesis.

Our weekly classes as well as our Kindergarten classesparticipated in a wetland walk in our Nature Zone. Thechildren observed the state of the wetland and recordedtheir observations in a journal.

We would like to THANK all who have sent 2-litterpop bottles to the greenhouse. We now have enough forour project and will no longer require additional dona-tions of plastic bottles.

Also, we would like to extend our MANY THANKS tothe volunteers who tirelessly work to make our green-house program possible.

This month, we are learning about Elizabeth Murray and her fun and exciting cartoonish paintings. Many studentslearned about how to create a canvas and watched a short film about the artist from Art21.

1st graders are learning about the difference between two and three dimensional lines. We are creating a design withlines. First they created a background utilizing 2-dimensional concept with construction paper strips (also worked ontheir fine motor skills). Then, they will add 3-dimensional lines with construction paper strips by folding, curling, andshaping various styles of lines.

2nd graders are excited to do their names in abstract designs. They brainstormed various abstract designs and thecomposition of their names in bubble letters. I can’t wait to see their final outcome of this project because it takes a lotof their patience and creativity to come up with many many many abstract designs.

3rd graders are working on a wall art inspired by Elizabeth Murray. We brainstormed our ideas of abstract and car-toonish shapes. Each student will create his/her own designs out of cardboard and paint them colorfully. When everyoneis finished, we’ll put all 3rd graders artwork together to create one giant wall art to decorate the hallway!

Greetings Parents and Young Artists!

The fourth graders have been working hard as we completed glazing our ceramic cupcakes. The results are deliciously delighting and will be featured in a “bakery window” display in the Arrowhead lobby.

We are shifting back to drawing for our next creation as students learn about Op Art and optical illusions. Each classlooked at a variety of Op art and learned how to shape their line drawing to trick the eye. Color will bring the designsto life as we practice using value and shading, changing colors from dark to light, to achieve a 3-D effect.

Our “Artist of the Month” featured contemporary artist, Elizabeth Murray, for the month of November. Her artwork ischaracterized by large canvases that are constructed in cartoon-like shapes. The shapes fit together like a puzzle andher colorful creations represent everyday objects like furniture, teacups, and utensils. We will also be looking at variousOp artists more in depth for the short month of December.

Coming in January, I will be developing an online classroom that will feature images of student artwork and insightinto our weekly studio time. Please feel free to check out the online classroom, which will be accessible throughthe Arrowhead website, this coming New Year to keep up with current art news.

I wish everyone a wonderful holiday season and a very happy New Year! Until next time, keep creating!

The kindergarten artists have been very fortunate this Fall. We have had the wonderful opportunity to host twoUniversity of Akron art education students. Rhiannnon Barnes and Erin Dean presented several lessons to ourenthusiastic Kindergarteners. Their cave paintings, trash can art and Matryoshka nesting dolls were fashioned fromlessons prepared by these fabulous ladies. We wish them well as they finish their semester. Our littlest artistscompleted their orange section of the color wheel and began our snowmen paintings too. What fun!
