electionapplicationsfornextschool
yeararedueinthecomingweekswith
electionsoccurringApril2-3on
SoutheastMissouriStateUniversity’s
campus.
“Thisiswhatiscalledthestudent
governmentgeneralelections,andthey
takeplacethefirstweekofAprilevery
year,”SGAvicepresidentGregFelock
said.“Theapplicationfortheexecutive
board,whichincludesthepositionsof
president,vicepresidentandtreasurer
aredueonMarch12andthenforany
ofthesenatepositions,whichare
designatedbycollege,aredueon
March24.”
Allstudentsareabletoapply,with
senatepositionsarrangedbycollege.
Eachcollegegetsfivesenatepositions
excepttheHollandSchoolofVisualand
PerformingArtsandSchoolof
UniversityStudies,whicheachhave
threepositions.
“Soastudentwillturninan
application,whichareavailableinUC
202,alongwitha50-wordbioanda
picture,”Felocksaid.“Andthenactual
electionsoccurontheportalandthey
aredonethatway.Studentscanbegin
campaigningforthosepositionson
March2,andusuallycampaignspick
upafterSpringBreak.”
Theapplicationsforsenateand
executivepositionsarethesame,even
thoughtheyaredueatdifferentdates.
“Theapplicationisprettysimple,”
Felocksaid.“It’sreallymoreofa
statementofcandidacy,soallitisis
yourname,whatpositionyou’re
runningfor,somebasicaddressinfo,
butthereisnotypeofinterview
questions.It’sjustreally‘I’mthisperson
runningforthisposition.’”
The50-wordbiographyandstudent
picturewillbeusedduringtheonline
election.Studentsvotingwillbeableto
clickonacandidate’snameandthe
candidate’sinfowillappear.
“Peopledovaryingdegreesof
campaigning,”Felocksaid.“Some
peoplegooutanddoflyers,chalking
andFacebook.Somepeoplejustmake
aFacebookpage,butitisapretty
simpleprocess,especiallyforsenate
positions.Executivepositionscanbea
littledifferent.Theelectionsalloccur
thesame,butsometimescontested
positionswillhaveadebate.Currently,
thereisonlyoneticketrunningfor
executivepositions,sorightnowthey
areunopposed.”
Felockaddedthatthereareusually
vacantseatsafterelectionsthatare
filledbytheorganizationthroughan
interviewprocess.
“Somecollegeshaveverycontested
races,whileinothersthenumberwho
fileforcandidacyendupgettingseats,”
secretaryJamiConleysaid.
Studentswhowanttorunforboth
anexecutiveandsenatepositioncan
doso,butcanonlyfilloneofthe
positions.
“Iftheyareelectedtoanexecutive
position,thentheirsenateseatwould
gotothenexteligiblepersonwho
receivedthemostvotes,”Conleysaid.
Campaigning,whichbeganSunday,
hasvariousrulesthatcandidateshave
tobeawareof.
“Everystudentwhofillsouttheir
statementofcandidacy,photoandbio
isgivenapamphletthathasallofthe
campaignrulesoncampus,”Conley
said.
Someoftheserulesinclude
candidatesmustaskpermissionfrom
theOfficeofResidenceLifebefore
puttinguppostersindorms,not
chalkingonwallsorunderawnings
andnothingpromotingyourcandidacy
canbenearthepollingstations.
“Wearealwayslookingforgood
people,especiallyintheexecutive
positionsandsenateasawhole,”
Felocksaid.“Itisagreatwaytoget
involvedandserveotherstudents,so
definitelyapplyifyouareinterested.

Redhawksin1982andhasledtheSoutheast
softballteamtofourNCAADivisionIItour-
naments,oneNCAADivisionItournament,
fiveOhioValleyConferenceregular-season
championshipsandfiveOVCtournament
championships.
TheRedhawksbeattheHoustonBaptist
Huskies9-7onFeb.14inMonroe,La.,during
theMardiGrasClassic.Theywereledby
juniorpitcherandutilityplayerLindseyPat-
tersonwhohadthreeatbatsandproduced
onehomerunandthreeRBIs.

hawksthisseasonisfreshmanKeairaSchi-
lling,whohaspitchedatotalof31innings.
“I’veneverquitfromnotbeingoneofthe
starters,butIcandefinitelysaycomparedto
beinginhighschoolandnowIhavetoactua-
llytrustotherpeople,”Schillingsaid.“Ican’t
doitbymyself,butIreallyenjoyhavingthe
weightonmyshouldersandbeingableto
produceforourteam.”
Schillingholdstheteam-highforstrikeouts
with25andhasawin-lossrecordof1-3.
“ThispastweekendinMemphis,Iknow
thecompetitionsteppedupandIfeltlikeour
hittersattheplateproducedforus,”Rich-
mondsaid.“We’vejustgottogetourpitching
staffrolling.Thetwolosseswehadtherewas
alwaysabiginningwheretheyscoredthe
runs.Thenweturnedaroundandhadabig
inningagainstLoyola.”
TheRedhawkshadanincrediblefifth
inningagainsttheLoyolaUniversityChicago
RamblersintheBluesCityClassictourna-
mentwheretheyscored10runstogoonto
win13-3.
“Youwanttogetasmanygamesunder
yourbeltaspossibletoworkthroughalotof
differentscenariosonyourdefense,inyour
battinglineupandalsoitgivesthefresh-

TherearemanyclubsthatSoutheastMissouriStateUniversity
offerstostudents.Whetherastudentisinterestedinscience,
art,film,mathorsports,thereisanorganizationforit.The
RecreationEnhancementClubatSoutheastisgearedtoward
givingthestudentbodyanopportunitytonetwork,recreate
andexperiencenewrecreationandleisureactivities.
BrookeGrubb,asenioratSoutheastandathree-yearvete-
ranoftheRecreationEnhancementClub,isthepresidentof
theorganization.
“Whatwedoisweprovidestudentsleadershipopportuni-
tiesdoingoutdooractivitiessuchasbiking,canoeing,cam-
ping,hikingandcaving,”Grubbsaid.“Andalotofwhatwedo
dependsontheweather.”
Despiteweathergettinginthewayofsomeactivitiesthe
cluborganizedlastsemester,membersstillwereabletogoon
twohikingtripsandacampingtrip.
Grubbisexcitedthattheclubhasplannedtodoanoutdoor
activitythatithasneverdonebeforethissemester.
“Thissemester,ourfirsttripisgoingtobealittledifferent
thananythingwe’vedoneinthepast.Weareactuallydoinga
paintballingtripinacoupleweeks,”Grubbsaid.
ThetripwillbeonSundayatGatewayPaintballParkin
Bridgeton,Mo.,andanystudentiswelcome.Theclubwill
coverhalfofthe$30cost,whichincludesgearandequipment.
“Anyoneismorethanwelcometocome.Evenifyou’ve
neverdoneit,comegiveitatry,”Grubbsaid.
Grubbexplainedthatitisn’tdifficulttojoinforthoseinter-
estedinbeingapartoftheRecreationEnhancementClub.
“Youcaneithershowuptoanyofourevents.[Theclub]is
only$20.The$20coversgas,foodandaT-shirtfortheyear,”
Grubbsaid.
StudentscanalsoattendaRecreationEnhancementClub
meetingonthefirstWednesdayofeverymonthinParker
Room202atnoon.
Alongwiththepaintballingtrip,theclubhasvariousother
tripsplannedfortherestofthesemester.
OnSunday,March23,theclubisgoingonabiologyhike
attheLittleGrandCanyonnearMurphysboro,Ill.According
totheUnitedStatesDepartmentofAgriculture’swebsite,the
LittleGrandCanyonisa“deepboxcanyon”thatwascreated
duetoerosionovertime.
“Acoolandlushbottomlandhabitatthrivesonthecanyon
floor.Alongtheupperportionsofthetrailvisitorsencounter
expansiveviewsofthecolorfulcliffs,theBigMuddyRiverand
theMississippiRiverfloodplain.Thecanyonfloorshowcases
seasonalwaterfalls,largesandstoneoverhangsandtowering
beechandsycamoretrees,”accordingtotheUSDAwebsite.
TheclubwillusethehighropescoursenewtoSoutheast’s
campusonApril6andonApril20theclubwillhikeat
ElephantRocksandJohnsonShutIns.Toconcludethesemes-
ter,onMay4theclubishostingabarbecuesocialforthe
club’smembers.
Grubbhascreatedmanymemoriesthroughouthertimein
theclub.Shesaidherfavoritetripstotakearethecavingtrips.
“MyfirstyearwhenIfirststartedwewentonacavingtrip.
Thereisthiscavethattheclubhaspermissiontogointoonan
owner’sprivateproperty.I’veneverbeencavingbeforeinmy
lifeandwegetthereandallyouseeisthisbig‘oleholeinthe
ground,”Grubbsaid.
Grubbdescribedamysteriouswaterfallinsideofthecave
thatclubmembershavealwayswantedtoventuretoandfind
outwhatisbeyondit.
“It’soneofthoseweirdmysteriesasfarastheclubgoesthat
everyone’slike,we’regoingtofindthatoneday,butnobody
hasbeenabletogetthatfar,”Grubbsaid.“I’vebeenonthree
[cavingtrips],andeverytimeIgoit’sadifferentgroup,diffe-
rentdynamicsandwedodifferentthings.Thecavemaynever
changebuteverytimewego,peoplewonderatitbecause
peopledon’tgettodostufflikethis.It’salwaysjustagreat
experienceforeverybody.”
Aspresidentoftheclub,Grubbhasmanyresponsibilities
besidesenjoyingheroutdooradventures.
“Iactasanliasionbetweentheuniversityandtheclub,so
anytimeweneedanythingthatisuniversityrelatedsuchas
registrationandfunding,I’minchargeofallthat.Ialsorun
ourmonthlymeetingsandeveryofficerisrequiredtoleadat
leastonetripasemester,”Grubbsaidofherduties.
ThissemestertheRecreationEnhancementClubhasfive
officers,includingGrubb.
“Usuallywedon’thavethismanyofficers,”Grubbsaid,“but
membernumbersareup.Youknow,itworksgreatwhenwe
candivvyupresponsibilitiesalittlebitfurtherwithallofthe
otherresponsibilitiesmembershave.”
Asofrightnow,theclubhas25members.Formoreinfor-

art.Ahistorymajorinitially,theintroductory
ceramicscoursewasallittooktocompletely
alterTriplett’sfuturegoalsandaspirations.
“Tobehonest,Southeasthasalwaysbeen
asecondhometome,”Triplettsaid.“Irea-
llyandtrulykindoffoundmyselfthere.Ben-
jiehasremainedaclosefriendandmentor.…
IfeltlikeIcouldbeanadultthereand,sortof
thewayofanartist,reallyfoundmyselfthere.”
TriplettwillreturntoSoutheastthismonth
toexhibitashowofhismostrecentwork,pie-
cesfromanin-progressseriesentitled“In
OtherFields.”Triplettcombinesbothcera-
micsanddigitalimagingtocommunicatehis
messagetoviewers.Thephotographs,though
shotdigitally,areprintedontranslucentfilm
foran“oldstylecamera”appearance.

varietyofplaces,hashelpedshapethese

“Abeautifulimage,abeautifulpasturecan
havesomanydifferentconnotations,”Triplett
said.“Soit’skindofatoolIliketouse,andit’s
alsoaveryeasyentrywayinsomerespects.
We’reusedtolookingatlandscapepainting
andlandscapephotography,andIkindof
combinethatwithsomekindofcinematic
stylesetuporshots,almostlikeI’mcreating
asingleimageofalongerrunningstoryand
tryingtoapplynarrative.”
Triplett’smessagerevealsmoreaboutindi-
vidualpositionratherthangeographicloca-
tion.HerememberstravelingtoPhiladel-
phiaandthefeelingofbeinginanentirely
differentworldcomparedtohishometown.
Hewantshisarttospeaktothisseparation
ofhavingasenseofisolationandthebust-
lingculturalandsocialdiversitythatametro-
polisoffers.Triplettsaidthatneitherstyleof
livingismoreorlessright,buthisartaimsto
observeadistinction.
“Backhomeyou’reaperson,you’reacer-
tainkindofpersonincollege,you’reacertain
kindofpersonwhenyou’reatschool,you’re
acertainpersonatyourjob,”Triplettsaid.
“You’resortofthose—yourassociateperson.
You’retheveryfacetsofyourpersonalityand
howplacerelatestothat.”
Triplettsaidthatthoughthelarge-scale
imageswerekeptsimple,hehopesviewers
willbeabletorecognizethebeautyand“quiet
poetry”withinasettingorfigure.Healso
hopesthatviewersstudyhisart,thatitmakes
themthink.
“I’minterestedinpresentingsomething
thatmaybeasksmorequestionsthan
answers,”Triplettsaid.

“Hehadareal,kindofinterestingdialo-
guebetweenthosephysicalmaterialsofthe
ceramicsandthisdigitalprojectionthathe
wasshowingthoseagainst,”PowersNowlin
said.“Ithinkallstudentsshouldcomedown
becauseIthinkitwillreallyexpandtheir
understandingofwhatartisandhowitcan
functionintheirdailylives.”

Thebandmembersallkneweachotherinhighschooland
attendedEvangelischeMittleschuleSchiers.Theywerepartof
theGraubündenyouthchoiraswellastheirschoolchoir.
Somedaysafterschooltheboyswouldgoacrossthestreet
toabartorelax.ThedrinkingageinSwitzerlandis16,so
thiswasanormalthingformosthighschoolstudents.They
wouldspendallnighttheresometimes.Everytimetheydrank
together,theywouldtaptheirglassesagainsteachother’sand
singthedrinkingsong,“Inviva.”
“Wedrinkbeersandeverytimewe’dcheer,we’dsingadrin-
kingsong,‘Inviva.’Invivameans‘forliving,’”Tscharnersaid.
That’swhentheygottheideatostartabandtogether.
“Oneofmybestfriendshadtheidea,‘Let’sdoanacappe-
llagroup.Imeanweliketosing,let’sdoitlikeTheWiseGuys,”
Tscharnersaid.
TheWiseGuysareafamousacappellagroupfromGer-
manythatprovidedalotofinspirationforInvivas.
“WetookInvivasbecausewesaidthat‘Inviva’thedrinking
songdescribesusthebest,”Tscharnersaid.
Theprincipalattheirhighschoolheardthatthesixboys
fromtheschoolhadformedaband,soheaskedthemtoper-
formattheschoolprom.Theirfirstshowwasasuccessand
openedapaththatledtoevengreatersuccess.
“Wegotinvitedforaneventwhereabirthdayis,”Tschar-
nersaid.“Andlatersomeonethereheardaboutit,toldsome
friendandthisfriendhadsomethinglikethat,soitspread
out.”
Astheirpopularitybegantoblossom,theystartedgetting
biggerandbettershows.EveryyearinSwitzerland,aconcert
isheldonEaster.
“ThenwegotinvitedfortheEasterConcert,”Tscharner
said.“Weonlyhadanadvertisementinthelocalnewspa-
per,buttheroomwasfulllikeover200people.Itwassurpri-
sing.Wesangwiththesheetmusicinfrontofusandwebarely
movedbutthepeoplelikeditbecausewearecharmingand
goodlookingandallthat.”
Usingsomeoftheirconnections,theybookedseveralmore
concerts.
“Wehadaconcertinalocalartplace,whichissmall,but
wegotinvitedforthisbecausetheorganizerforthisartcen-
terisalsothesecretaryatourschool,sosheknewus,”Tschar-
nersaid.
Theirnextconcertwastheticketintomanymore,bigger
shows.
“Thechiefofthebankheardaboutus,andheisactually
anex-studentfrommyfatherbecausemyfather’sateacher,”
Tscharnersaid.“Sohecamethereandheheardusandhewas
amazedbyus.Hewantedtoinviteusforthisbankthing.And
itwasinacongresscenter.Wewentthere,andtherewasover
700people.Weperformedtheretwice,andthepeople,they
reallylikedit,theywerereallyamazed.”
Thebandtriestosingasmanydifferentgenresofmusicas
possible.TheystartedoutjustcopyingsongsfromTheWise
Guysbutwentontostartarrangingtheirownsongs.They
performedjazz,blues,rock,popandevenDisneysongs.
“Ourgoalistohavesongsforeveryone,likethateveryone
canenjoy—cancomeandenjoyit,”Tscharnersaid.“Because
otherwisenormallyyoufocusonsomething,butthat’sstupid
becausethenonlythiskindofpeoplecome.”
Alloftheband’sarrangementsarenowdonethemsel-
ves.Astheyprogressed,theyfeltitnecessarytostartdoing
theirownsongs.BandmemberBasilZinsliisinchargeofthe
arrangements.
Thebandwantedanotherwayforpeopletohearabout
them,sotheydecidedtomakeamusicvideo.
“Wewantedtohaveasongonlinethathassomethingsur-
prisingthatthewatcherdoesn’texpect,”Tscharnersaid.
Invivasperformedthesong“HideandSeek,”originallyper-
formedbythesingerImogenHeap.Tosurpriseit’sviewers,
Invivasaddedabasedropandabeatboxmix.
ThebandcontinuestoperformeventhoughTscharnerleft.
Atpresent,Invivashasfivemembersandareperformingcon-
certsforthousandsofpeople.
TscharneractuallyheardaboutSoutheastfromafriend
ofhisbackhome.Theywerediscussingfutureplansandshe
suggestedmovingtoCapeGirardeautobetterhisEnglish.
Tscharner’sfriendsuggestedthisbecausesheoriginallycame
toCapeGirardeauthroughafriend’sunclewhoknewafamily
wholivesinthearea.
“Soshetoldmeaboutitandshesaid,‘Theyallhavean
acting,atheatredepartment.Icangetyoutheemail.’And
thenIgottheemailandIwrotetoKenandhesaid,‘Yeah,
comeon.’Hesentthattointernationalsender.Iwrotethe
thing,Iappliedfor,ItookmyEnglishtest,whichwasvery
goodbecauseatfirstIwasreallybadatEnglish,anditallwent
reallyfastandsuddenlyIwashere,”Tscharnersaid.
Dr.KennethStilsonisaprofessoratSoutheastandteaches
severalactingclasses.HewasthefirstpersonatSoutheastthat
TscharnerhadcontactwithbeforecomingtoCapeGirardeau.
Tscharner’sgoalincomingtoSoutheastistoperformand
tolearnhowtomakeacareeroutofit.
“WhatIlikeofactingisIcanbesomeoneelse.It’sthebest
feelingifyou’reonstage,andyouarereallyinthischaracter
andyoureallymaketheaudiencebelievethatthisworldthat
weareplayingonislikereal,”Tscharnersaid.“Wecanmake
themenjoythiswholeevening,Ilovethatfeeling.”

wasinFebruaryatGuildhallinLondon.Thesecondwillbein
AprilattheUniversityofArtsinLondon.
Tscharnersaidthattheonlythingthatwouldmakehim

Tabitha Brown Spending it on work, catching up on art projects because I am an art student and also visitng my boyfriend’s family because I haven’t gotten to see them in a while.

publicschoolsfor12years.Thetwohaveser-
vedonnumerouscouncilsatSoutheastMis-
souriStateUniversityincludingtheFounda-
tionBoard,BoosterClubandRedhawksClub.
TheyarebothmembersoftheCopperDome
Societyandhavedonatedanannualscho-
larshiptotheDepartmentofEducation.The
CopperDomeSocietyrecognizespeoplewho
donateregularlytoSoutheast.
TheRedigershavehadsixfamilymem-
berswhohavegraduated,areplanningtogra-
duateorcurrentlyworkatSoutheastandcon-
sidertheuniversitytobealargepartoftheir
lives.
LastFriday,universitypresidentKenneth
W.Dobbinsawardedthecouplewiththe2014
FriendoftheUniversityAward.Thisawardis
thehighesthonorgrantedbySoutheast’sUni-
versityFoundationBoard.
Q: Can you tell me a little bit about your his-tory with Southeast?
IfirstgotstartedwithSoutheastbackin1980.
Iwasinvitedtoameetingoncampustotalk
abouttheideaofstartingafoundationand
thatwaskindofthebeginningofthefounda-
tion[board]andmybeginningrelationship
withSoutheast.Ithengotinvolvedwiththe
BoosterClub.Wehavehadchildrenattend
SoutheastandgraduatefromSoutheast.I
haveadaughterthatletteredfouryearsin
softballatSoutheast,we’vehadgrandchildren
attendandgraduatefromSoutheast,wehave
onegrandsongraduatingfromSoutheast
thisDecember,sowe’vebeenprettyinvol-
vedthere.
Igotinvolvedwiththefoundationand
severaldifferentcommittees,Ichairedthe
foundationfortwotermsandmywifeison
thefoundationcurrently.
Weendowedascholarshipinthe
DepartmentofEducationthispastyearfora
student,sowe’reSoutheastfansandcontinue
toattendfunctionsatSoutheastandsporting
eventsatSoutheast.WeenjoytheRiverCam-
pusandSoutheastisaverybigpartofour
community,andIamveryinterestedin,you
know,furtherdevelopingourcommunity,
andSoutheastisagreatcommunitypartner.
Q: So you originally joined Southeast as a foundation member?
No,thiswasjustameetingwaybackinthe
earlytomid80swhenDr.BobFosteranda
groupofuswereinitiallytalkingaboutbegin-
ningafoundationattheuniversity.
Q: So was your grandson your inspiration for donating an education scholarship?No,mywifeFranwasanelementaryteacher
andthescholarshipisinhername,anditwas
furtheringeducationbecauseshehasbeen
verysupportiveandbelievessomuchina
highereducationintheeducationfield.
Q: Is Fran still active on campus with any kind of organization?
Yes,sheiswitheducation,withthePowerof
Women,theWalkforWomen,amemberof
theFoundationBoardnow,andofcourse
we’rebothverybigboostermembers.
Q: What exactly does the Friend of the University Award mean to you?
It’sthehighestawardgivenbythefoundation.
I’vealwaysadmiredthroughtheyearsthose
peoplewhohavebeenawardedthefriendof
theuniversityandhowdedicatedtheyhave
beentotheuniversity.It’sabighonortoboth
FranandI.Wewerebothveryhumbledby
thehonor,andwewillcherishitanditwillbe
anexcitingweekasweactuallyreceivethe
FriendoftheUniversity.Itmeansagreatdeal
tous,anditisaverypersonalhonor.
Q: Is there more to the Friend of the University Award after receiving it at the banquet on Feb. 28?TheceremonywillbeattheRiverCampus
thateveningIthinkat6:30p.m.Butwe’llbe
thisyear’sFriendoftheUniversityinallfuture
publications.Ialwayslookatthelistevery
yearwiththefoundation’sannualreportthat
comesoutandotherfunctionswherethey
recognizefriendsoftheuniversity.It’san
honortobeputinfriendoftheuniversity.It’s
anhonortobeputintheircompany.
Q: In the press release president Dobbins said that you and Fran have given of your ‘time, talent and treasures.’ Is there anything specific that comes to mind when you think of these things?
Well,whenIwasinbusinessIdevotedalotof
timetothebusinesscommunity,andIhave
usedthatexpertiseanddecisionsthroughthe
foundation,butjustasIsaidearlierourtime
withtheboosters,withathleticendeavors
andwealsoenjoytheRiverCampusandwe
supporttheuniversityeveryyearasmembers
ofnotonlytheCopperDome[Society],butof
thePresident’sCouncilandofcoursesuppor-
tingtheuniversityfinancially,everyyear,we
haveforyearsandyears.
Q: Is there anything in particular that you most enjoy about Southeast? Is there something that really stands out?WhatIenjoymostaboutSoutheastthroug-
houttheyearsisseeingitgrow.Toseeitgrow
andbecomeaveryimportanteducatio-
nalinstitutiononthissideofthestateand
thegrowthandqualityoftheuniversitythat
servesnotonlyourcitizensinCapeGirar-
deaubutthroughoutthisregion,nationa-
llyandnowinternationally.Ithasjustbeen
veryrewardingtoseethegrowingstatureand
numbers.
Q: What do you think the biggest change has been since you originally started working with Southeast?Probablythecampusandthereachthatthe
campushashad,thegrowthofcampus,the
infrastructure,thecourseofferings,theaddi-
tionofthescienceandtechnologybuildings,
theadditionthatwasclosesttomyheartwas
theadditionoftheDempsterSchoolofBusi-
nessandmaster’sprogramthere.Andthen
ofcoursetheRiverCampusandtheschoolof
theateranddancehasbeenverynoticeable
astheuniversitycontinuestogrow.
Q: Did either you or Fran have a really strong reac-tion when you heard you
were given this award?
Yeah,wedid.IgotthatphonecallandIsaid
‘weareveryhonored,’weareinthecompany
ofsomeverydedicatedpeopletoSoutheast.
Weareverythrilledwithit,veryhumbledand
veryhonored.
Q: What other awards have stood out to you in the past?
I’vehadotherawards,theRushLimbaugh
CommunityServiceAwardthroughthe
ChamberofCommerce,aUnitedWayaward,
awardsthroughSt.Francis,andI’vejusthad
severalthroughtheyears.Butthetwothat
stickoutinmymindaregoingtobetheRush
H.LimbaughCommunityServiceAwardand
theFriendoftheUniversityAward.Those
arethetwothatreally,reallystandout.And
ofcoursebeingawardedbothFranandI
togetherasthefriendoftheuniversity—that
standsontop.
Q: Do you have any future plans for things you want to work with Southeast on?We’llcontinue.Thisisn’ttheend.We’llconti-
nuetoserveSoutheast,we’llcontinuetosup-
portfinanciallySoutheast,we’llcontinueto
watchSoutheastgrow.Ihavethreegrandchil-
drennowandwe’regettingupthereinyears,
somightnotseethemgettoSoutheast,butI
kindofthinktheymayhavesomeRedhawk
bloodinthem,too.

Aspartofapracticumprogram,eachof
thesestudentswillreceiveaclientforcoun-
seling.Alldieteticsmajorshavetocomplete
thisprogramplusanine-monthdietetic
internshipinordertograduate.
MariettahasbeenteachingatSoutheast
MissouriStateUniversityfor16yearsand
explainedthatthefreecounselingprogram
hasbeenaroundforabout14years.
“I’mteachingnutritioncounseling,and
that’saclass,”Mariettasaid.“Sothey’re
learningallkindsoftechniquesforworking
withpeopleinacounselingsettingrelated
totheirdiet.Soafterwe’vebeenaboutsix
weeksinclassthey’rereadytogooutand
workwiththeclients.”
Thecounselingprogramincludesfourses-
sions.Itisthestudent’sresponsibilitytotalk
totheirclientandcomeupwithreasonable
meetingtimesandaproposedplanthatworks
bestwiththegoalsandneedsoftheclient.
Whilethedeadlinetoreceivethecoun-
selinghasalreadypassed,accordingtoMar-
iettatherearenorestrictionswhenbeing
selectedasaclient.
“Wehavedifferentagesofclients,”Mar-
iettasaid.“Sosometimesitwillbeapar-
entwho’shavingaproblemwithachild
andwe’llworkwiththat.Wehavesomecli-
entswhoareworkingatChartwellsandare
inaweight-lossprogramthere,andsowe’re
helpingwiththat.Wehaveoldpeople,hand-
icappedpeople,justwhatever.”
AccordingtoMarietta,afterastudent
receiveshisorherclientthestudentcango
inanydirectionthattheychoosewiththeir
clientbutwhatismostimportantishow
theyreportbacktoher.
“Sometimestheygotothegrocerystore
andthepersonmighthavealistofgrocer-
iesandthenthestudentwouldsay,‘Wellyou
wantbluecheesedressing,let’sseewhatwe
cansubstituteinsteadthat’salittlehealthier.
Sotheyhelpthemtoknowhowtopurchase
things,”Mariettasaid.
Inthepaststudentshavealsoprepared
variousrecipesandentirecookbooksfor
clientsaswellasgonetoarestaurantwith
themandhelpthemorderoffthemenu.
“Sosomebodymightwanttolearnabout
vegetarianism,sothenthatwouldbetheroad
thatthey[thestudent]wouldgodown,”Mari-
ettasaid.“Theymightwanttolearnhowtocut
saltoutoftheirdietbecausetheyhavehyper-
tension.Alotofpeoplewanttoloseweight.A
lotofpeopleareintheprocessoflosingweight
andkindofjustneedmotivationsotheyhave
someonetobeaccountable.”
Mariettabelievesthecounselingprogram
helpsstudentstoprepareforwhattoexpect
intheirfieldaswellastogainexperience
beforebeingthrownintotheworkforce.
“Iworkon—liketodaywewereworking
onreflectivelistening,sothat’satechnique
thatIteachthemtotrytohelptheperson
thatthey’retalkingandfigureoutwhatthey
needtodo,”Mariettasaid.“Itdoesn’twork
ifwesay,‘Youdothat’and‘Youdothis,’but
ifthepersoncomesupwith,‘Ithinkthis
wouldwork’it’sbetter.SoIteachthemhow
toworkwithpeople.”
SeniordieteticsmajorKatieDieboldsaidthat
throughthiscounselingprogramshehopes
togainabetterunderstandingofhowpatients
makeandmaintaincertaindietarychanges.
“I’veknownforawhilenowhowtoassess
individuals,suchastheirenergyrequire-
ments,butthereismoretonutritioncoun-
selingthanjustthat,”Dieboldsaid.“Iwant
tolearnhowtoproperlyrelaythisinforma-
tiontotheminawaythatmyclientscan
trustme.Therearealotoffactorsthatcan
affecthowwellacounselingsessioncango,
suchasbodylanguageandtoneofvoice.
Thisclasswillteachmehowtobeawareof
thesefactorsandbeaneffectivelistenerand
communicator.”
Dieboldhopestosomedaybearegistered
dietitianandspecificallyworkwithchil-
drenandteens.Shealsoaspirestoobtain
hermaster’sdegreeandpossiblyteachone
dayaswell.

givesahinttothetypeofhumorIhave.Infact,Ienjoyalotof
BBCandEnglishshows,andIfollow“DoctorWho”and“The
ITCrowd.”Itendnottothinkaboutthefuturealot,butI
hopetobeareporterforNationalPublicRadioformycareer
becauseitwouldallowmetotravelandlearnaboutmany
differentthings.

WhenIwasinhighschoolIwantedtobecomeaprofessio-
nalmagicianbecauseIthoughtitwaschic,butthenitsee-
medthatgettingadegreeingraphicdesignwouldbeabet-
terchoicetomakealiving.Idon’trecommendgivingupon
yourdreams,butsometimesoneneedstoremembereating
isanessentialpartoflife.NowIamstudyingphotography
andhopefullythatwillmakemerichoneday.Alittleoptimis-
