someone is on holiday. Always report anything

suspicious to the police.

Beware!! Children’s Cancer

Charity Telephone Call Scam! I have today been contacted by a person claim-

ing to be putting together a calendar to raise

funds for a children‘s cancer charity.

I have been contacted by this company before

and found out that it was a scam. The telephone

number they called from is 01695 576275 and

the person spoke with a Liverpool accent.

I have contacted the police who have confirmed

that these people are not from a charity and it is

indeed a scam.

They usually ask if you would like to advertise

on the Calendar and usually aim at businesses.

Please do not pay them any money.

A donation will be made to the ‗Aurora Centre‘ American Civil war Re

enactment at Cusworth Hall.

On Sat and Sunday 2nd/3rd July, Cusworth Hall

was alive with gun shots, cannon blasts and the

sound of galloping horses. The American Civil

War Society put on a fantastic dramatic display

watched by many local people. Before the battle

commenced, visitors were able to explore the

civilian, Confederates and Union camps showing

what life was like in 1860 America.

We have some photographs of the event in this months issue of the Arrow. The photograph

above shows a surgeon from the time, sharing

stories of blood, pain, death and gore with a

crowd of very interested youngsters!

A group of children, parents, Chair of Governors and the Head from

Richmond Hill Primary School celebrated the new Puffin Crossing outside

school on Wednesday 13th July 2011 by cutting a ribbon.

The crossing has been installed to ensure the safety of pupils and community members

on this busy road following a petition for a crossing in this location organised by Mrs

Fiona Williams, a parent from the school and overseen by Councillor Malcolm Wood,

Chair of school governors.

Mrs Williams, supported by a group of other parents, gathered thousands of signatures

from the local community and was overwhelmed by the support of all. The signatures

and letters were organised by Mrs Found, based in the school office and presented to

the Mayor.

Mrs Williams said, ‘We are so pleased that all our efforts were successful. Melton Road

is extremely busy and we are happy now that our pupils and the rest of the local people

will be able to cross the road in safety’.

Mrs Jill Foster, Head of Richmond Hill said, ‘I would like to thank every one for their

support. This was truly a community effort’

I hope you are having a

lovely summer and

enjoying this wonderful

time of year when you can

socialise and eat alfresco.

Doncaster is renowned for its race

course and our main event – the St.

Leger meeting – will be held from

7th to 10th September. For beauty

salons Leger week is like Christmas

week, so it would be wise to decide now what treatments

you want and to book them early.

It is the ‗finishing touches‘ that give you the WOW factor

on these occasions, so the areas you need to be thinking

about are your hands and feet - primarily your nails and

how they are decorated; your skin and how your make up

enhances it; and your eyes - especially not forgetting the

lashes – this year‘s biggest beauty statement!!!

For your fingernails there are so many wonderful options:

if you require length then nail extensions would be ideal

for you and you can also choose a French finish or a

colour. More popular methods nowadays of creating

beautiful looking nails involve Shellac and Bio Sculpture

Gels. Shellac can last up to two weeks without chipping,

takes only thirty minutes to apply and soaks off in ten

minutes - a perfect and durable solution. Bio Sculpture

Gels involve a protein treatment which gives strength to

the nails, takes one hour to apply and thirty minutes to

soak off. Both these treatments enable you to leave the

salon immediately without having to wait for your nails to

dry and both are eye-catching , being available in an array

of colours.

Many people do not consider their feet to be an attractive

feature, but the one treatment which would ‗jazz up‘

anybody‘s feet is Minx – involving coloured foils being

warmed with an infra red light and then carefully cut to

the shape of your toe nails and moulded on to the nail

plate, where they will stay for up to eight weeks. Their

effect is stunning, and the numerous available styles

include metallic's, animal prints and the Union Jack.

For the face a make up is required which will last all day

without needing a ‗touch up‘, and mineral make up fits the

bill. Containing no oils, waxes, buffers or preservatives, it

has a SPF of 15 so will be ideal if the sun is out at the

races. It has been confirmed by dermatologists and the

cancer society as being harmless to the skin - in fact, it has

been suggested that wearing mineral make up is more

desirable than not wearing any at all!

A St. Tropez tan will give you that beautiful bronzed

look to set off your little race dress and take all the hassle

out of you trying to apply it yourself.

Taking only fifteen minutes to apply, these lashes can last

around TWO WEEKS and, at a cost of only £18, are a

must for the races or for any other social event on your

calendar this summer.

‘For beauty salons, Leger

week is like Christmas, so

it would be wise to decide

now what treatments you

Finally – the lashes!!!!

There are 3D lashes that

last up to six weeks, with

in-fills every three to

four weeks; weekend

lashes, that can last a

few days; and strip

lashes, which are

ideal for the single day.

The latest additions to

this range are the

stunning ‗PH Lashes‘.

Cornering Dear readers, Superb cornering is a skill to master. Here‘s how to do it.

Many aspects of Advanced Driving are exhilarating, but smooth, progressive, and safe cornering is

arguably the most enjoyable. Advanced Drivers handle corners in a prepared and precise way, with superb observation, great planning, a good line through the bend and a progressive exit. These are

crucial elements that raise driving standards above those of the everyday motorist. Even the innocu-

ous corner requires real concentration.

What is the limit point of vision?

The limit point is the furthest point ahead at which you have a clear view of the road surface. On a

clear, level road this is the point at which the right and left-hand sides of the road appear to meet.

Advanced Drivers always drive at a speed that allows them to stop (on their own side of the road)

within the distance they can see is clear- that is the distance between them and the limit point

This determines how fast you can drive. The further away the limit point is the faster you can go, as

you have more room to stop in - and vice versa. This applies to junctions as well as bends.

Match your velocity to the speed the ―limit point‖ moves away from you, providing you can stop in

the distance that you can see is clear.

If you watch the limit point as you approach a bend or a junction, you‘ll notice that it may move. If it

moves towards you, slow down, as the bend or

turn is tightening.

If it moves away from you, it means the road is

opening up. This ‗Limit point technique‘ involves

matching your speed, to the speed the limit point

moves, accelerating or slowing your vehicle ac-

cordingly.

Using this method ensures the right choice of

speed and the correct gear selection. This will

enable you to maintain your vehicle‘s balance

throughout any turn or curve.

The vehicle will be on the correct side of the road

in a balanced and controllable state, and you will

be able to stop in the distance you can see to be

clear.

If you are interested in the courses that we offer,

you‘ll be able to find this information on the Insti-

tute of Advanced Motorists website at

O

New Rector

Appointed

ur new Rector, the Revd. Tony Sophianou arrived in Sprotbrough recently and was officially

appointed at a service of Collation and Induction in St

Mary‘s Church on 24th May 2011 by Bishop of

Doncaster, Rt. Revd. Cyril Ashton. A large turnout

ensured a very warm welcome for Tony and his wife,

Pauline. We all look forward to Tony‘s ministry

amongst us all here in Sprotbrough.

The Revd Tony Sophianou - A brief pen picture

A Londoner by birth, Tony was ordained priest in Canterbury in 1989 after a long career in journalism, press and public relations and marketing, latterly as a director of a small agency in

London's West End. Before coming to Sprotbrough, he served as Vicar of Goole, and previously in

Doncaster (Wheatley Park), and Stevenage, Hertfordshire, where he had a major involvement with

areas of poverty and other social problems. For four years he worked together with the Local

Authority, NHS and other agencies to address some of these issues, which included establishing

strategies to improve generally the physical and social infrastructures. He was also a founding

Trustee of The Living Room, a Christian charity dedicated to helping people overcome addictions of

all kinds.

He is currently one of the Bishop of Sheffield's Advisers on Urban Matters, an adviser to the Bishop

of Doncaster on inter-faith matters, a Member of the Diocese of Sheffield Board of Faith & Justice

and of the Diocesan Church Urban Fund Grants Panel, as well as a Trustee of St Agatha's

Community Kickstart Fund.

Within the Goole community he was amongst other things, President of the Goole Christian

Mariners' Association and a Trustee of two local charities. Previously in Doncaster he had been a

Workplace Chaplain, Volunteer Chaplain at Doncaster Royal Infirmary, school governor, member of

various community groups and the South Yorkshire Coalfield Partnership Board. He was a founding

member and first chair of the Doncaster Multi-faith Strategic Group and an Independent Assessor of

CLAY (Changing Lives Among Youth).

Tony is particularly concerned to help individuals who feel unable to deal with, or consider

themselves unjustly compromised by, social systems, be they political or otherwise, and any issues

which alienate individuals or groups.

Tony is married to Pauline and they have five children - Demetri, Alexi, Andrew, Kathryn and Helen

- and there are now seven grandchildren, with another on the way. For the past eleven years, he and

Pauline had fostered a severely disabled child, Barry (now almost 18). Pauline had previously been a

care worker and Barry had been one of her 'clients' since he was three years of age.

Tony's hobbies include watching football, reading, computers and crosswords and watching Pauline

doing the gardening!
