SynopsisChapter 12:Passepartout Travels on Alone, and Grows a Very Long Nose. Passepartout finds himself on the Carnatic.they have missed the ship-on his way to Japan without any moneyarrived at Yokohama-searches for Mr. Fogg everywhere- could not find him.decided to look for a job- to pay his way to America.apply for a job at a circus

Chapter 13: Mr. Fogg and Party Cross the Pacific OceanFix got his arrest warrant in JapanFix runs into Passepartout - punches him - tell Passepartout -will help Fogg to finish the trip.Ship arrives in San Francisco, Fogg checks on the train -leave for New York that night.The train stops in OgdenThe train suddenly stop-find out that the bridge ahead is about to collapse-Colonel Proctor suggests to speed up the train.The train engineer agrees-train goes at full speed-the bridge crashed into the water.Setting.Time Place

Time.The 52nd day.(Pg.96)Nine days after the ship left Yokohama.(Pg.96)The General Grant is due to arrived at San Francisco on the 2nd of December.(Pg.96)The next train to New York City is at six o clock on the same day they arrived at San Francisco.(Pg.99)

Place.Hong Kong.Onboard the Carnatic.Yokohama, Japan.Onboard the General Grant.Crossing the Pacific Ocean.San Francisco, America.California.Sacramento through Sierra Nevada Mountain.Great Salt Lake in Utah.Ogden.The Rocky Mountains.

Character and characteristics.

Phileas Fogg40 years oldLives in Savile Row, London.Tall, dark-haired, grey hair.Member of the Reform Club.Wealthy, lives alone, has a butler.

CharacteristicsCalm -His travel are far from smooth but he stays calm.(Pg.103)Honest -Gets his passport stamped as proof of his travel.(Pg.100)

Charitable -He paid Mr. Batulcar, the owner of the acrobatic troupe, some money to repair the Noses that Passepartout had damaged.(Pg.95)

Jean PassepartoutPhileas Foggs new butler.30 years old, Frenchman.Has lived in London foe five years.

CharacteristicsLoyal -Punches Fix for the trouble he caused in Hong Kong.(Pg.92)Resourceful -When he has no money to eat in Yokohama, he sells his clothes to buy food.(Pg.89) -Looks for a job as an acrobats, singer and performer.(Pg.92)

Sharp -When he realizes that the acrobatic troupe is on its way to America, he quickly joins it as this is a way for him to look for Fogg and Aouda in America.(Pg.91)

Defensive -He detests Fixs assumption that Fogg is a robber and he reminds Fix that he will wring Fixs neck if he reacts in a similar manner as he did in Hong Kong.(Pg.98-99)

Detective FixA detective employed by the Bank of England.Short man, small eye, bushy eyebrows, mouse-like appearence.

CharacteristicsOpinionated -He is confident that Fogg is the robber and does not budge from his opinion.(Pg.98-99)

ThemesBenevolence and compassionBatulcar does not know Passepartout at all but when the latter wanted a job, Batulcar complied.(Pg.91-92)

Necessity is the mother of invention.Passepartout sells his clothes to buy a meal when he arrived at Yokohama without Fogg and Aouda.(Pg.89-90)

Establishing sincere relationshipsFogg compensates Batulcar for Passepartout ruining the Long Noses.(Pg.95)Passepartout does not believe Fix when the latter said that Fogg is the robber of the of the Bank of England as Passepartout is convinced that Fogg is a perfect gentleman.(Pg.98)

Moral Values.Perseverance and determinationPhileas Fogg is vey determined to finish his journey in the 80 days, but he is calm in facing the challenges that come his way.(Pg.96)Fix is also determined to arrest Fogg once he fixed on the idea that Fogg is the gentleman robber.(Pg.87)Passepartout resolutely looks for Fogg and Aouda in Yokohama although he does not speak the language nor have money to feed himself.(Pg.88)

CourageThe weather conditions and obstacles they faced along the way would have made anyone with a weaker resolve turn back in fear. However, Fogg journeyed on.(Pg.103/104-106) Questions.Who is Mr. Batulcar?

What does Passepartout do when he meet Fix again on the General Grant?
